BISCUIT JAR BY LANCASTER & SONS HANLEY ENGLAND HP BIRDS EPNS TOP/RIM/HANDLE
This antique porcelain biscuit jar was made in England by LANCASTER& SONS of Hanley and is so marked on the bottom.There is also an incised number which appears to be 445. The biscuit jar is round although our scanner has made it look square. And the handpainted bird sitting on a branch appears in three places against a pretty blue background. The rim, the handle and the top are marked EPNS. This lovely piece was probably made about 1910 and it is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks athough there is mild, age-related crazing. The base is 5 1/2 inches in diameter and the height to the top of the handle is 9 1/2 inches. We have not attempted to polish the metal parts because the golden patina is so attractive but the original silver look can be seen in picture# 5 which shows the underside of the lid. It is bound with a blue reinforcing paper on the spine. There are 2 pages for each month. Plus a couple pages of recipes, anecdotes and a story about Spitzbergen. There are approx 32 pages total. Some of the corners are a little ragged. There is some light pencil writing at the top of the front cover(please see pic) It could probably be erased but I wanted you to be able to choose whether or not to do that. Sweet Vintage (1900-44) Lancaster & Sons English Roses Pitcher
This delicately decorated pitcher stands just under 6½" tall at spout. Just over 6” wide from spout to handle and 3” from front to back. Decorated with classic English roses in pinks and yellows with gold gilding. Makers mark is“L& Sons Ltd, Hanley, England” for Lancaster& Sons circa 1900-1944. There is an additional gold/gilt handpainted mark next to the maker's mark that I cannot really decipher ~ maybe 63qc? My mom picked this pitcher up at an antique store in London back in the 80s. In very nice condition with no chips. Cracks, breaks or evidence of repairs although there is some crazing and loss of gilding here and there- nothing unexpected for a porcelain 70+ years of age. Whilst this pedestal torte/ sweet plate remains a nice example of vintage Lancaster& Sons ware. Circa 1920's, alas it is no longer perfect. Heavy and discernible crazing. Pattern wear. A couple of dents in the metal, most likely chrome, stand as well as beginning signs of corrosion, primarily on the inside. The metal stand simply does not tighten all the way. The piece stands 3" high and measures 7.75" across the rim. No nicks. Chips or cracks. Scratches/ Marks/ Wear/ Rubbing consistent with normal usage. This piece is in Fair Vintage/ Used condition. Robinson and Burt Lancaster in ALL MY SONS(1948) Still code number 1563-75 at bottom left in negative with matching descriptive press snipe tag attached to reverse side of photo. Measures approximately 8-1/8" X 10 inches. CONDITION: A diagonal crease near bottom right corner; shorter crease up by top left corner tip with another short wrinkle just over Lancaster's head from the edge. Soft corners.
