The lid is engraved, Made in England" and"EPNS" electro-plated nickel silver, commonly known as silver plate. The lid is a little tarnished and there is some wear, which is probably normal and would be expected for the age. The bottom is marked: WITH PEEK. FREAN& Co.s COMPLIMENTS" S.F& Co. ENGLAND" it has the Crown Logo, and a raised square with a number in it. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs but there is some crazing. I am not being sure about the floral design, I do not have the knowledge to know if it is transfer ware or hand painted. A very nice antique biscuit/cracker jar. Colors are still very vivid and colorful for it's age. The colors are from a light cream to a goldish brown. With roses in the shades of light pink to dark pink and white. Green leaves around them.The finial is ornate. Not sure if this is hand painted or transfer. Some of the areas on the rim, handle and lid appears to be have been silver plate,but is tarnished or worn down over the years to the brass below it. Some of the silverplate still remains yet in areas, alot underside of the lid. The bottom is inscribed with COMPLIMENTS PEEK,FREAN& CO. S.F. CO. RARE 18th C. EARLY ANTIQUE WHIELDON SCHOOL POTTERY STAFFORDSHIRE TEA CADDY JAR
Just acquired out of a wonderful Private estate. We are able to offer this very early, 1750's era ~ STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERY TEA CADDY JAR WITH A SEASHELL MOTIF ~. There was a little note inside that said it is a WHIELDON SCHOOL TEA CADDY ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS WHIELDON" UNITED KINGDOM" It is certainly a wonderful and very early example with a fabulous seashell motif. I believe the collectors will recognize the form and maker. It measures 4 1/8 inches tall to the top of the spout by 3 1/4 inches wide by 2 3/4 inches deep. I would imagine it originally had some kind of lid, but it has long since been lost. The condition is actually amazing nice for such an early example. There are no chips or cracks, and only some fairly minor expected wear from age and use. There is tiny little flake on the inside of the spout- see picture#12 and ... moresome expected discoloration around it as well. This would make a fine addition to any serious collection.
