The cup is shaped like an egg, it has"grass" and"foliage" twisted around the base with a curved handle resembling a branch. the top is serrated like an eggshell with a lid the fits on top with an opening for the spoon. A baby chick pops out of the lid as a handle. The spoon is also porcelain and is a figural chicken. The jar is 3" high, about 3 1/2" across with the handle, overall it is 4 1/4" high with the lid. The jar measures 6 ¼ inches or 16 cm high to the top rim and is 5 ¾ inches or 14.5 cm in diameter at the top rim. The jar features a low round foot which supports barrel form body. Around the body is a continuous frieze of women wearing diaphanous dress with their hands joined together. The frieze has an applied gold border along the top and bottom. And above the frieze is a border with swags of flowers. The top of the jar has a silver plate rim with a ribbed edge and handle. The cover to the jar is also silver plate. DESCRIPTION: Superb antique(ca. 1900) French faience covered jar or box with striking turquoise and black decoration in the Islamic/Orientalist aesthetic. Signed as shown"France" and with a maker's signature. But I don't know who made it. Measures about 7" tall and it comes across as a medium size piece. Comes from a local Dallas estate. 1920's Art Deco Newport Pottery Orange Condiment Jar with Silverplate Lid/Spoon
On offer is a sweet little lidded jar from Newport Pottery of the UK. Pot is in very good condition. Considering that it dates to the Art Deco era-the 1920's. Has a silverplated lid and spoon(spoon is not original but given as I think this is a perfect jam/marmalade jar. You've just got to have a spoon! Bowl is 3" 7.5 cm in diameter and stands roughly 5" 12.5 cm tall(to top of lid) Spoon is 4.5" 11 cm. in length. Newport Pottery is probably best known for one of its alumni. None other than Clarice Cliff. Clarice Cliff worked at the A.J. Wilkinson pottery factory, owned by the Shorter family, and her talents were noticed and supported by the company's MD, Colley Shorter. He sent her to study at the Burslem School of Art from 1924-25 and upon completion she returned to work at Newport Pottery, a small company run ... morein tandem with the larger AJ Wilkinson firm. In 1927 a market testing of 60 pieces of Cliff's'Bizarre Ware series was launched. It was an instant success and this particular jar. While not part of that line, shares many of Cliff's design sensibilities; her love of bright colours, flat opaque glazes and Nouveau/Deco florals. Cliff became Shorter's mistress and they eventually married after the death of his wife. This jar would also look splendid on a vanity table. Perhaps commissioned, a tobacco jar/ humidor is my guess,hand sculpted with amazing detail and stamped"Opening Night" Cross Town Bus, famous rock club back in 1967 renowned for it's Doors concert among other famous rock and roll bands. It has a Medusa style head on the front and snake on the back with stamped map of Brighton Center, Brighton Mass. 337 Washington St, Warren Hall( the building that housed the Cross Town Bus Club on the second floor) Also stamped is $2.50, the price of admissions.
