The front and rear inner hinges are split, is split, and rear hinges look and feel as if they have been reglued at the gutter. The binding of the signatures is a bit shaky, with some starting to come loose and with the page edges not quite flush, otherwise the inner pages are Very Nice, they remain bright, clear, clean and unmarked; all the plates are lovely. Most noticably at the corners, the ends of the spine, and the lower edges; the corners are curled, and the spine ends are dented and soft; the publisher’s red ... moredye on the upper edge of the text block has faded; there are bookseller prices in pencil on the front free endpaper; the book is cracked before the half-title page, but it is solid and unshaken; all-in-all, this is a good/very good copy with a marvelous provenance. This title is reasonably scarce because its publication was suppressed by the estate of Arthur Conan Doyle; the presence of Mr. Queen’s inscription to a contributor makes this copy quite a rare item. This is arguably THE primer Classic by Mark Twain; Life on the Mississippi printed in 1883 by JR Osgood and Company Boston complete with leather covers. The work has over 300 illustrations and is very solid and tight. There are 624 pages. The story originally made the papers by being sold as a subscription only. The pages have some foxing and are starting to yellow some. The Spine is very good although slight separation is starting on the inside covers. This edition has what we all look for. The caption on p. 443 reading"the St. Louis Hotel" in addition to Mark Twain appearing in flames on p. 441 which was offensive to his wife who was successful in having it removed. This is a great collector's book perhaps one of the most famous of all editions. A real must for the serious.
