As published into a special abridged edition just 4 years after Stowe's passing on July 1. 1896. Y OU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK! I t is dominated by a single theme: the evil and immorality of slavery. Stowe emphasizes the horrors of slavery on almost every page of the novel while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as the enslavement of fellow human beings. U nlike the 1852 1st edition. Published by John P. Jewett& Company in two separate volumes, this special First ALTEMUS' YOUNG PEOPLE'S LIBRARY EDITION! contains VOL. 1& 2 combined into one book. I t is beautifully illustrated with over 90 ILLUSTRATIONS! by ... morecelebrated artist of the time. U pon publication. Uncle Tom's Cabin ignited a firestorm of protest from defenders of slavery(who created a number of books in response to the novel) while the book elicited praise from abolitionists. Southern reactions ranged from forcing a bookseller in Mobile. Alabama to leave town for selling the novel to sending threatening letters to Stowe herself(including a package containing a slave's severed ear) The novel had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the United States, so much so in the latter case that the novel intensified the sectional conflict leading to the American Civil War. The book also helped create a number of stereotypes about Blacks, many of which endure to this day. These include the affectionate, dark-skinned mammy; the Pickaninny stereotype of black children; and the Uncle Tom, or dutiful, long-suffering servant faithful to his white master or mistress. In recent years, the negative associations with Uncle Tom's Cabin have. To an extent, overshadowed the historical impact of the book as a"vital antislavery tool. An anti-slavery state. He offered the master's widow the modern equivalent of some $7000.00( for his freedom but to no avail.so in 1846-7 he sued in court. The judgement went against him, but a retrial was called for. In 1850, a Missouri court upheld his case; the widow appealed. In 1852 the Missouri Supreme Court struck down that ruling. Scott tried again in federal court, but was struck down again. At that point, Scott appealed to the federal Supreme Court ~ again, to no avail. The Court's ruling was based upon the notion that, essentially, NO non-white person could be recognized as a citizen of the United States to begin with; consequently. Scott had no legal standing to bring suit in federal court in the first place! Moreover, slaves were considered private property, as such, granting Scott his freedom would involve violating the master's rights, depriving him of property without"due process" It gets more complicated ~ the Ordinance of 1787 regarding US-held territories was involved, and the Missouri Compromise of 1820 got thrown out the window.it was concluded that Congress hadn't the right

As published into a special memorial edition just after Stowe's passing on July 1. Uncle ... moreTom's Cabin ignited a firestorm of protest from defenders of slavery(who created a number of books in response to the novel) while the book elicited praise from abolitionists. In the first year of publication, 300,000 copies of Uncle Tom's Cabin were sold. The book eventually became the bes

1929 GOD’S TROMBONES, by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON - SIGNED & INSCRIBED 1st UK RARE
GOD’S TROMBONES- Some NEGRO SERMONS in VERSE. By JAMES WELDON JOHNSON. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author. JAMES WELDON JOHNSON, on a blank prelim page: Louise and Ralph/ from James and Buell/ to mark the first/ mile post/ London. June, 29th, 1930” Interesting that James Weldon Johnson was in London in 1930. I wish I knew who LOUISE and RALPH and BUELL were. But I don’t. I’d like to think that Buell was“Buell G. Gallagher” Ralph was“Dr. Ralph Bunche” and that Louise was someone equally as notable, but again, I can’t seem to come to any confident conclusion. When you DO find out who these people were, I’m confident there names will enrich this book. Maybe. Published by George Allen& Unwin Ltd. Museum Street, London, 1929. First UK Edition, with the statement: First Published In Great Britain, 1929” on the copyright page, with no indication ... moreof additional printings. Hardcover book. Paper covered boards, embossed red lining on the front cover, red title labels on the front cover and spine, no dustjacket, 6.5” x 9” 58 pages plus an“Acknowledgements” page and a Colophon page at the rear. There is a small red price label(same color as the title and spine title labels) on the rear pastedown; it shows a price of“3s. 6d. GOOD condition. The covers’ have 1/4” of peeling/ fraying at the top of the spine, sunning to the rear cover(giving the brown paper covering a light purplish tint) fading to the spine label, and some rubs, scratches and scrapes; nonetheless these original covers are sturdy and the label printing remains bright. Internally the pages remain tight, bright, clean and unmarked. The inscription is bright and clear. There is a lot about James Weldon Johnson on the Internet. Including on Wikipedia. An incredibly interesting and important late 19th and early 20th century African American. Check out my other items!

~ 1ST ED 1912 MOWBRAY TITANIC NAUTICAL MARITIME ANTIQUES RARE WHITE STAR LINE ~
~ FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION~"Sinking of the Titanic ~ Thrilling Stories Told By Survivors ~ MEMORIAL EDITION" ~ By Jay Henry Mowbray. 1912 This book has a very rare alternate cover. With a rendering of a sinking Titanic and survivors in lifeboats in the foreground(the usual cover has a photo of the ship broadside) That said, I would have to say that the cover and spine are in pretty poor shape, as the photos suggest, with faded titles, bumping to corners, unraveling of cloth at the very top and bottom of the spine. The pages and photographs within the book are in quite good shape, with just a bit of browning. All pages are intact and bright, with no writing. I accept paypal. Please email with any questions. Shipping to destinations other than USA will be more costly.
~Rare 1st Edition 1880 Ben Hur Lew Wallace Classic Book Tale of the Christ
=" Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ Lew Wallace 1887 Harper& Brothers Franklin Square. New York A classic and timeless work. “Lew Wallace said that he wrote Ben-Hur as a way to sort out his own beliefs about God and Christ. In doing so he inspired many readers by combining romanticism and spiritual piety common in sentimental novels of the 19th century with the action and adventure found in the more popular stories of the day. It prompted many clergy to reverse their church's long-held opposition to novels and actually encourage their congregations to read Ben-Hur. As a result helping it to become one of the best-selling novels of its time. Surpassing Harriet Beecher Stowe's ... moreUncle Tom's Cabin( 1852) as the best-selling American novel and retained this distinction until the 1936 publication of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. Book is a First Edition. Book in very good condition for its 130+ years. Buyer to pay $4 shipping, no reserve!

Whose odd literary characters include Dickensian-like grotesques who are closer to God than the rest of us. George MacDonald(1824-1905) Scottish Author. Visionary, Novelist, Spiritual Poet, Christian Minister, and Fantasy Writer. ... moreMacDonald was an enormously popular Victorian story teller, prophetic speaker, and had an immeasurable influence on the literary world. A controversial minister who preached that God and redemption exist in the unconscious mind- his radical religious beliefs led to charges of heresy. He left the ministry to focus on writing, between 1851 and 1897, he wrote novels, plays, essays, sermons, poems, fairy tales, and two fantasies( Phantastes. 1858, and Lilith. 1895) that elude categorization. A close friend of Lewis Carroll, he’s credited with convincing Carroll to publish Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. His other friends included most of the literary luminaries of the day. Like Charles Dickens, Henry Longfellow, Walt Whitman, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Mark Twain, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. In 1872, MacDonald traveled to America for a wildly successful lecture tour where crowds exalted him as a Prophet, Seer, and Saint. Considered the father of modern fantasy writing, his work famously inspired C.S. Lewis, Madeline L’Engle, J.R.R. Tolkien, G.K. Chesterton, W.H. Auden, E. Nesbit, and Oswald Chambers. THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ ~ 1st Edition ~ 1900 ~ RARE!!
Going once.Going twice.Sold! Please be sure to read the terms of the sale prior to bidding or making offers. Thanks. Be sure to check out my other sales for some very unique antiques and collectibles! ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here we have a copy of the rare 1st edition. 2nd state, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It has the“C” binding variant. Technically this book is considered a“mixed state. as it has all 2nd state points with the exception of the front cover sheet, which is a 1st state(with the advertisement enclosed by a box) In my opinion, this makes this book slightly more desirable than a standard 2nd state. I would rate the book as being in good restored condition. All the text pages and all 24 color plates are present. At one point in its long life it received a professional restoration. This older restoration included relaying the remaining ... moreoriginal spine material on a new spine with new hinges(the top and bottom of the original spine material is missing) There are signs of minor restoration and repairs to various text pages and color plates. Such as the mending of tears and the paper rebuilding of edge margins(most notably on the front cover sheet, the color plate opposite page 80 and the last page of the book) There are occasional minor pencil marks, smudges, small tears and lost page corners. Interestingly, the book has a bookplate from Stanford University. Please see the pictures for additional condition information. 1860 Antique Song Book sheet music rare Longfellow 1st?
This auction is for a wonderful antique songbook: The Nightingale- A Choice Collection of Songs. Chants and Hymns! It is from 1860. It is by W. O. and H. S. Perkins and was published by Oliver Ditson and Co. at 277 Washington St. in Boston. The book has a hard cover and is bound with a strip of very soft leather or paper. It measures about 5" x 7" and is around 200 pages long. The book is well worn. It has wear and tear from age. And a number of the pages are loose from the book. There are also some pages missing(but none of the songs listed below are missing) There is a name written inside the back cover that looks like Ambrose Devereaux of Springfield, MA. Music was made for the poem here by W. O. Perkins. Perhaps this is the 1st appearance of the poem set to music? Please see photo below.
