Samoa, Islands of the Pacific, Society Islands, Tahiti and much more Much eye witness info and observations Early ethnographic content filtered through a Christian viewpoint(Antique BOOK) ca. 1837 A Narrative of Missionary En terprises in the South Seas by John Williams. Presumed American edition( probable A ppleton- last page identifies printer as G.P. Hopkins& Son- the printer of the American edition of this book published by Appleton in 1837. This copy is certainly of that period but may be a year or two later. It is a hard cover book in modern rebinding. It measures about 8.75 x 5.25" Contains 525 pages of text plus numerous full page illustrations and a large and very detailed double page folding map of Polynesia. The map opens to 10 x 8.5" with image ... morearea somewhat smaller. Publisher lines read, London, John Snow. There are also numerous other illustrations and vignette running with the very long and detailed text. Lots of information about Pol ynesia. Samoa, and other island in the Pacific. Some of which are known today by ot her names. There is also a healthy dose of Christianity and the objectives of Christian missionaries. But the eye witness accounts of real people in far of f places in the days when white people were few and far between is much more readable and interesting than the religious portions. This copy LACKS the title page and table of contents. In all other respects it is complete, it is priced for the value of the map and plates. Though I did not read it cover to cover I read enough of it to know that the author personally observed and wrote about an great number of people. Places, customs and religious practices all over the Pacific but especially in the Society Islands and Sam oa. The sections I found the most interesting were on the comparative linguistics of the languages of Pacific Island peoples. There is an interest chart that compares different words in a variety of Pacific languages(see photo)

EARLY MANUSCRIPT MAP OF COASTAL MAINE Handwritten Maritime Americana RARE c.1850
FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL CIRCA 1850 MANUSCRIPT MAP OF COASTAL MAINE. This terrific early map was painstakingly rendered by a skilled hand. Possibly that of a cartographer, in brown and red ink on glazed cotton fabric. Map covers a large swath of the Maine coast. Stretching from about Swans Island to North Cutler, and may have been used to assist in coastal navigation. Among places referenced by name include Swans Island, Long Island, Bass[Harbor Head Light House] Tremont, Mount Desert[Island] Eden, Ellsworth, Hancock, Franklin, Union River, Sullivan, Frenchmans Bay, Winter[Harbor] Gouldsboro, Steuben, Narraguagus River, Cherryfield, Milbridge, Pleasant River, Columbia, Addison, Jonesboro, Jonesport, Chandler River, Machias River, Machias, etc. Maine is in the New England region of the northeastern United States. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean ... moreto the east and south; New Hampshire to the west; the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the northwest; and New Brunswick to the northeast. Maine is both the northernmost and easternmost portion of New England. The state is known for its scenery- its jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, its heavily forested interior, and picturesque waterways- as well as for its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams. For thousands of years. Indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine. At the time of European encounter, several Algonquian-speaking peoples inhabited the area. The first European settlement in Maine was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years. As Maine entered the 18th century. Only a half dozen European settlements had survived. Patriot and British forces con

Colorized Antique Map Dated 1658 - Authentic
This is an antique map dated 1658. It has been hand colorized by the original publisher(D. Alberto Conradi Vander Burch) It is a map of the Americas showing the Carribean area with Florida depicted as a truncated pennisula. The land mass of Georgia. Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas as well as parts of Mexico and Central America are shown. Also depicted are the major islands of the Carribean(Cuba, Espanola, etc) The Map is in very good condition considering it's age(over 355 years old) It has a tear in the upper right border of about 2" but this tear does not encroach upon the map. Also sometime in its history something created a stain on it. The stain does not detract from it. It amazes me that such things do survive the years. I had an Antiquary Map Dealer look at it and he said in good condition they sell for $2500 to ... more$3000. In this condition he said $600 to $900. However, you get to name the price in the auction! I do have a reasonable buy it now so be aware someone could snap it out from under you by paying the"buy it now" price. This would look great framed. Please look at the pictures for over-all condition and you be the judge. Email us and we will send whatever pictures you may want if the request is reasonable(I will not be taking tens or hundreds of pictures so be specific as to what you may want to see) Good Luck Bidding!

1934 Pictorial Map of the Second Byrd Antarctica Expedition
Description: 1934 pictorial map. Illustrated by George Annand was published by the General Foods Corporation as a promotions map for kids, intending to celebrate the Byrd's second Antarctic expedition and the groundbreaking radio broadcasts along the way. This is a highly collectible map of Antarctica issued by the General Food Corporation. It depicts the second Antarctic expedition of Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd and beautifully illustrates the South Polar Region, including the southern tip of South America and the eastern tip of New Zealand. The map identifies explored regions of the Antarctica, along the coast, especially near the Ross Sea. It also marks unexplored regions. The map is adorned with a title cartouche illustrating a sled dog. A compass rose, penguins and the portrait of Richard Evelyn Byrd. A note below the title reads, ... morePast polar expeditions have been swallowed up by a silence which was never broken until they returned-if they did return. But on the Byrd Expedition there is being attempted the most notable feat in radio history-a two-way broadcast of the Expedition as it is being lived-from the very lips of the men themselves. Hailed by leading authorities as an important contribution to radio science, this series is made possible by General Foods, makes of Grape-Nuts' Two insets, on the top left and bottom right quadrants, detail the'Route of Expedition and Path of the Broadcast' and'The Bay of Whales' respectively. A detail map of Little America(the expedition base camp on Ross Ice Shelf) is included within the inset of the Bay of Whales. Other illustrations of whales, penguins, ships, airplanes, etc. are included throughout. A banner over the South Pole indicated previous expeditions of Amundsen in 1911. Scott in 1912 and Byrd's first expedition in 1929. The second Byrd expedition took place in 1934, and it was during this second expedition that Byrd spent five cold months alone at Advance Base and almost died. He would later describe his ordeal in his autobiograph
