Feb 17 1820, S. from Thomas Witt to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, Washington DC, re the writer's, nephew, Henry Witt, who went missing in Maine and was presumed possibly to be in the U.S. Army; address panel has red New York, Feb 18(1820) postmark, matching red Free marking(struck out) + manuscript 18-1/2c postal rate marking. The content reads. In part: I would not trouble you. Was I not sure my request would be cheerfully complied with. I have a brother. Benj. Witt, who resides in. Norway. District of Maine, a near neighbor of John& Henry Burt, with whom I presume you are acquainted with. My brother, together with two of his sons, enlisted in the Army during the late war with England[War of 1812] Left at home one son, Henry Witt, then about 19 years ... moreof age, who was dissatisfied at not going with them& on the night after their arrival home about the close of the war, this son Henry was missing& in consequence some signs discovered by the neighbors of some derangement of intellect his parents and friends was fearful something fatal had taken place. Addressed to“My Dear Colonel” COLONEL JEROME BONAPARTE of Baltimore. Maryland) From the letter: the box of terrapins arrived yesterday. The creatures were frozen and hard and stiff as the North Pole. I can truly say. I never ate finer. It was very kind of you to remember me in this way. Perhaps your better half's dislike of the dish is the result of her Northern prejudices, leading to the belief that Small Negroes have been disposed of to furnish forth the feast. Blatchford. A millionaire New York lawyer, wrote this letter while a Federal Judge. He wrote the letter to his close friend, the grandson of French-Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte’s youngest ... morebrother, whose family had lived in Maryland since the days of slavery. Colonel Bonaparte. A West Point graduate, had resigned his US Army commission to serve in the French Army under his cousin, Emperor Napoleon III, but had recently returned to America to marry Caroline Appleton Newbold, a widow who was the grand-daughter of Daniel Webster. Judge Blatchford had attended their wedding four months before. Reading between the joking lines of this letter. The bride, a Bostonian, was probably more sympathetic to the plight of the recently-emancipated slaves than her southern-reared aristocratic husband. Judge Blatchford's jest about"small Negroes" would seem mild enough, given the blatant racism of the times, were it not for the fact that, eleven years later, appointed a Justice of the US Supreme Court by President Arthur, Blatchford voted with the court majority to invalidate the federal Civil Rights Act, a ruling which"virtually ended Federal attempts to protect the Negro against discrimination by private individuals" and set the stage for the Court's"separate but equal" doctrine that legalized segregation. Stewart announced his retirement from the Court on June 18. 1981 and stepped down in early July at the age of 66. He was succeeded by Sandra Day O'Connor. The first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. At the time of his retirement Justice Stewart said he wanted to spend more time with his grandchildren and that he wanted to retire from the Court while he was still in good health. After his retirement. He appeared in The Constitution: That Delicate Balance, a 13-episode learning course series broadcast in 1984 about the United States Constitution with Fred W. Friendly.
