Pennsylvania(but not Dr. John Stockton Smith or his relatives) Size is about 9 in. x 11½ in. On the front endpaper someone had written a brief biography of John Stockton Smith. Indicating that he was born in 1862 and died in Pittsburgh in 1905. The doctor’s formal printed bookplate is attached to the front pastedown. The spine has gilt words“Medical Index. This is a very interesting medical ledger. Which provides a goldmine of information into 19th-century American medicine. The book has a printed title page as follows: A Medical Index. Being a Completely Indexed Note Book for Students, and for Physicians a General Index and Record Book for All Valuable Professional Reading and Experiences. ... moreArranged to Minimize the Labor and to Maximize the Usefulness(Ann Arbor. MI: Joel A. Miner, 1883) Not counting the handy index of proper names. There are seventy-one pages with handwritten entries(two of which have red ink) with the rest of the 384 numbered pages being blank. Notice in the journal there is a listing of a"Pocket Case" as well as a loose sheet entitled"A Pocket Case" see the 7th scanned image) The entries in the early part of the book are of patients. Starting in March 1885 with Mrs. Rush, widow of Barney Rush, who was suffering with a disease of the heart. It is really interesting to read the ailments that people suffered from. It is surprising that whiskey and brandy were prescribed quite often. Throughout the ledger are various diseases along with prescriptions for each. Some of these are: acne. Afterpains, amenorrhea, anal fissure, asthma, baldness, catarrh, cerebro-spinal meningitis, chapped hands, chilblains, Chinese cure for cancer(which included pickled lizards, bird claws, and coffin nails) cholera infantum, chronic constipation, chronic malarial poisoning, circulatory depressant, coccydynia, colic, consumption, dandruff, dipth

The books have illustrations throughout(actual photos) and some are quite gross. Especially in the venereal disease section. I didn't include photos of those since they were of people's naughty bits. and they kind of made me nauseous. I'm sure they won't be nearly as icky to people in the medical field. And huge, Vol. 1 has 724 pages and Vol. 2 has 1,527 pages. These covers look like leather but I don't think they are(not sure) Illustrated and also there are colored(some intricate) fold-out sections showing the inside organs, bones, brains, etc. Some of these special sections have damage where folded. 1908-09 Handwritten Midwife ? Medical Journal Notebook Children's Illness 97pgs
When I first started reading this handwritten journal the first thing that came to my mind was that this was a Midwife’s study journal. The reason I think that is because all 97 handwritten pages have to do with children’s sicknesses; the name of the disease or ailment. The cause and the treatment or cure. Plus other birthing and general heath treatments are represented. So it’s not an actually diary but more of a school notebook. It dates from 1908 and 1909 and when I went to look up the history behind early 20 th century Midwifery. The journal made that much more sense. I found the following description on the web… In the first several decades of the 1900s. Midwifery experienced two changes: 1) first efforts of professionalization and 2) gradual decrease…In the early 1900s, traditional midwives came under fire in what has been called the“midwife ... moreproblem” when they became scapegoats for American’s high infant mortality rate. Despite findings from the White House Conference on Child Health and Protection, the committee on the Costs of Medical Care, and the New York Academy of Medicine that point to physicians rather than midwives as the cause of these high mortality rates, many still blamed midwives for their“ignorant” and“dirty” ways. Scholars believe these traditional midwives became an easy target because of their status as African Americans or immigrants. Additionally, these early midwives lacked formal training, which made physicians even more suspicious of their practice. Of course there is much more history behind midwifery but I wanted to cover the early 1900’s as this is the timeframe this journal covers. I pulled these prescriptions out of a building in my family's estate in Methuen Massachusetts m they are dated 1927 and 1928. They have several doctors names. Some are from Lawrence Massachusetts as well but they all came from the same lot. My family owned an Odd Felloows lodge and a few scripts have Odd Fellows on them.

This antique set of books was published in 1846. By the author, Daniel J. Cobb, Botanic Physician in Castile, NY. They are titled The Medical Botanist and Expositor of Diseases and Remedies and The Mother's Guide. The Medical Botanist contains descriptions of medical plants, recipes, and diseases with reference to remedies, as well as remarks as to healthier living. The Mother's Guide contains an abrigded system of midwifery and descriptions of diseases and remedies peculiar to females. The Medical Botanist is leather bound, but the torn on the back. It has writing, stains, water damage, and browning of the pages on the inside, but is very readable. The companion guide is hard bound and appears in better condition. However it too has some spots and browning of the pages.

The hardcover medical book you are viewing is in very good condition for its age. It measures approx. 10" x 7" and has 1444 pages. The photos are of the actual book you will receive. I never use stock photos for any of the items in my shop. As most books I sell there may be signs of use and age like page discoloration. Folds, some cover damage and worn corners. If major damage is present I always try to describe exactly what it is. Up for sale is a fascinating piece. This handwritten medical ledger dates from 1872-1876. This handwritten book details the prescriptions given to various patients. Medical treatments, visits, and patients names. The doctor seemed to be quite fond of prescribing bitters. I also see occasions where lavender oil, Pills& Soda, Cough Syrup, Eye Medicine, Whisky, and a Syringe full of something. This book is over 150 pages long with every page used. This will need to be rebound.
