This is a beautiful original 1880s trade card advertising Smith& Lieb Hardware in Oswego. NY. They undoubtedly sold fishing gear for the Salmon fishing nearby. I believe this is from Houghton& Dutton Company- one of Boston's classic department stores of the olden days- one that you don't hear much about any longer though in its time it was"one of the largest and most popular in Boston" according to a 1908 book. That's saying a lot because it was the golden age of department stores and downtown Boston's streets were lined with them. Founded in the early 1870s. Houghton& Dutton was on Tremont Street at the corner of Beacon Street for some 50 years, closing in the 1930s. For more about these store check out the fabulous blog"Shopping Days in Retro Boston" which helped greatly with my research. Made of metal with a hole for your key ring. The tab measures approx. 1" in diameter. The number 13682 is engraved on the back. I recently acquired a key chain ... morewith nine of these metal tabs on it. It took me a while to figure out what they were- I thought employee ID. Locker tag… who know? Turns out that these were early forms of ID for store charge accounts- predating the beginnings of charge cards aka credit cards. Whoever owned this key ring sure liked to charge things! These are not dated and I'm not sure of their precise vintage- most likely sometime around late 1800s to the early 1900s but no later than that. They are from a variety of the early. Classic Boston department stores that lined the streets near the Boston Common and what we now call Downtown Crossing. Those were the days! Funny- the key ring and its contents now seem so similar to the plastic store discount tabs I've got on my own key chain.
