This is is an outstanding charger manufactured by Shreve of San Francisco. The piece measures 15 -7/8 inches in diameter. A 1-1/2 inch heavy sterling ... morerim surrounds the porcelain dish. This exceptional wide rim, vivid coloring, and Art Deco bird design makes for a very commanding decorative piece. In the last picture, I have showed two shallow dents on the bottom ring. I am confident that these can be banged out by a professional repair person. There are also some shallow scratches on the rim.A wonderful charger which can stand on an easel and add color and whimsy to any decor.

1858 Celebration In San Francisco Laying Atlantic Telegraph Cable CA Lettersheet
1858 Celebration In San Francisco Laying Of The Atlantic Telegraph Cable Lettersheet he Celebration in San Francisco In Commemoration of the Successful Laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable Monday. September 27th, 1858. Sterett& Butler, Printer, Engravers and Publishers, 145 Clay street, San Francisco. Overall size 15 5/8 x 10 1/4 Inchs. Sheet trimmed close and into design at lower and right edge. Lettersheet with crease folds, Light toning at horizonal fold at center. This wood engraving has around its periphery 35 small illustrations: four stars in the corner, thirty small seals of the States, and one unidentified portrait at the top. In the body of the sheet are several larger illustrations, Cars carrying 120 little girls, uniformly dressed in white, and representing all the States, and principal European Nations, Rube Aldrich, just ... morearrived, 120 days from St. Jo. Missouri, Adams with his family of Native Californians; and the men of the Knickerbocker 5 Fire Company in procession behind a float of a small boat with cable coiled on its deck. Here is the some text of the broadside: The day, which was one of the finest of the year, was ushered in by the tinning of bells and repeated discharges of artillery. At an early hour the streets were thronged with people, and boats were arriving from different parts of the interior, crowded with visitors, eager to witness or participate in the proceedings. Military and Fire Companies came from Stockton, Sacramento, Solana and other places, and people from every clime seemed to unite with the utmost cordiality in celebrating the great event of the age, by the greatest civic display ever known in California. The procession was to have formed in Market street exclusively, but it soon became evident that even that spacious thoroughfare would not contain the multitude that were to compose it, and many other streets in the vicinity were filled with the different military and civic associations. Along the line of march. and, indeed, throughout the city, the buildings were de

Antique Adolph Sutro Estate Appraisal Book Photographs San Francisco Real Estate ~ Welcome ~ For your consideration is this antique book"Estate of Adolph Sutro. Deceased, Appraised by A. S. Baldwin, March- April 1910. Adolph Sutro was a German-born inventor. Entrepreneur and real estate developer who helped shape the landscape of late 19th century San Francisco. Interested in providing inexpensive recreation for the general public, he changed San Francisco's sparse and undeveloped Point Lobos area into a flourishing recreational complex that during its heyday boasted the Cliff House. Sutro Baths and Sutro Heights. www.nps.gov. This very rare copy of Adolph Sutro's Estate appraisal contains 47 leaves printed on rectos only. Plus 62 original silver photographs(5 of them fold-outs) all bound together. 9x11½, gilt-lettered flexible ... moremorocco. The vast real estate holdings of Adolph Sutro, mostly in San Francisco but a few outside, are pictured and described, and appraised. Included are the Cliff House, the Sutro Baths, Sutro Heights, Richmond, Ashbury Heights, Sunset Heights, Parnassus Heights, Napa and Lake Co. Ranch, San Miguel Ranch, etc. Mr. Baldwin writes in depth about the famous properties and how Mr. Sutro's benefactors would best be served with the development of each property. Some very interesting facts of what was happening with Cliff House and the state of Sutro baths! This has been a very interesting read on the history of Mr. Sutro and early history of San Francisco. I do not believe there are many copies of this to be had as Mr. Baldwin addresses the appraisal to 9 family members. Please see the last photo for detailed information. 1850~AMAZING UNPUBLISHED SAN FRANCISCO GOLD RUSH ARCHIVE VINTAGE TYPESCRIPTS OF ORIGINAL DIARY AND 51 DETAILED LETTERS INCREDIBLE HISTORICAL CONTENT ON EARLY CALIFORNIA AND MINING I will give you a sketch of the celebration yesterday of the Admission of California into the States. A grand procession composed of the Soldiers. Police, Firemen, Boatmen, Chinese men, Odd Fellows, Masons and thousands of others. It was as splendid a procession as I ever wish to see. There were several orations delivered in the afternoon. In the evening a splendid ball. I was in the room this morning and it was decorated in the most splendid style. Flags of every nation were strung around the walls, but none so nice as the Stars and Stripes. There was one of the[The St. Francis] Hook and Ladder Corps which had 4 small boys on their wagon dressed splendidly and ... morein the middle a little girl carrying a banner with“The Belle of the Pacific” painted on it. The steamer“Oregon” was profusely decorated for the occasion. The supper was given in the next house to this—the one that I am in. The ladies’ dressing room was opposite. Our boss closed the gallery last night and on that account I tell you I saw some as fine looking girls or women here as one will see any place… Alfred Caldwell Thomas. Letter dated October 30, 1850. Note: The Celebration for the Admission of California to the Union was held on Tuesday. October 29, 1850, the day before the above quoted letter was written by Alfred Thomas. California was officially admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850. Interestingly, also mentioned in the same letter is the explosion of the steamer, Sagamore” which occurred on the same day as the statehood celebration. Onboard was the famous Mountain Man, James Kirker. The daily newspaper, Alta” reported the explosion of the steamer—stating that bodies and timber were scattered everywhere. Bodies were so mutilated, they could not be identified. Limbs and fragments were gathered up in baskets. Kirker had just boarded and amazingly survived

1855 SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA WOMAN'S 4pp LETTER
Very interesting 4 pp. letter dated San Francisco(California) Sep 2 1855, from M. A. Dash, to her Mother. It reads in part: The JOHN L. STEVENS arrived yesterday[from Panama] bringing the mail and over seven hundred passengers. The last steamer from Oregon brought me four letters and marching orders in the latter. I shall obey reluctantly- for the reasons I suffer terribly at sea and I fear for my poor little one. She has been very ill with cramps. And has still a severe cold. I have a very strong notion to remain where I am, for here I am comfortable, the whole family is interested in Daisy and relieve me of much fare and trouble. George will return in six weeks or two months. I do wish he has not written for me. He says to be guided by my own judgement, encourages me in the most earnest and pathetic terms to come. I can't bear to disappoint ... morehim, yet I have not the courage to encounter what my head grows sick to think about. What will the reality be? I am indeed perplexed and troubled. If I had the best and fondest of husbands the end of the journey might end, am I not a step would I judge. What makes you think you will never see any of us[again] George complain s bitterly of our separation and declares he never knew how much he loved me. It seems very strange to me that I should have the power of inspiring such deep love as he professes to feel, that some men should love me as much as their natures are capable. I think my husband a very superior man, in part the only one in California worth marrying. How very fortunate am I. He writes he has fallen off several pounds, now eights but 198. Wish I knew him when he was thin and slight. Think his figure must have been very handsome. San Francisco promises to be very gay for some months to come. Once upon a time I should have rejoiced, now I am perfectly indifferent to parties and amusements generally. Antique Booklet THE NEW SAN FRANCISCO TWO YEARS AFTER THE GREAT FIRE OF 1906
This is an amazing pictorial booklet entitled THE NEW SAN FRANCISCO- TWO YEARS AFTER THE GREAT FIRE. It was published by Cardinell-Vincent Co. to represent the contrast of San Francisco's Great Fire of 1906 to rebuilding efforts two years later. There are 34 pages. Each filled with antiquarian black and white photos of San Francisco, including four accordion-folded pull-out panorama photos, contrasting the"before" and"after. Two of these panorama photos are three page lengths when fully expanded and two are two pages lengths. This is a wonderful"view book" filled with historical photos capturing the Great Fire's enormity of the effects on San Francisco- The City By The Golden Gate. There is not a copyright date referenced in this booklet. But I presume it would be 1908, two years after the Great Fire of 1906. ... moreThe back cover references BOOK NO. 25. This booklet measures 10-3/16" X 7-7/16" and has moderate edge/corner wear, as well as some discoloration and smudging consistent with age. Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you very much for taking a moment to view my auction!
