TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The Secret of the Hittites: The ... moreDiscovery of an Ancient Empire by C. W. Ceram. Translated from the German by Richard and Clara Winston. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 279 pages. Publisher: Knopf; 1956) ISBN: 0880295937. The Secret of the Hittites" returns to the startling panorama of the author's first book. Gods, Graves, and Scholars" in the continued examination of the most ancient world known to man. Since the publication of C. W. Ceram's famous first work, a new discovery of enormous significance transformed the perception of ancient history. The darkest archaeological riddle of the Orient is on the verge of an ultimate and improbable resolution. And this with dramatic suddenness in the space of a few momentous years. The mysterious ruins discovered in central Turkey in 1834 were perplexing. Yet no one was willing to ascribe them to the Hittites, a people given scant acknowledgement in the Bible and dismissed as a minor Syrian tribe. It was not until 1880 that a hero of archaeology advanced the dynamic theory that there had once been a mighty Hittite Empire stretching from the Black Sea to Damascus. By 1910, only archaeologists and historians had begun to gain a faint and fragile knowledge of its lost history. Furthermore. Only in the years since 1946 has there been any hope of reading the fantastic Hittite hieroglyphic inscriptions, and only recently has anyone actually done so. Finally, almost twenty centuries after Christ, we know that twenty centuries before Christ the Indo-European Hittites descended into Asia Minor. We may now establish a third great empire beside the Babylon of Hammurabi and the Egypt of Ramses II read the first fragments of a profound unknown literature, of which Mr. Ceram provides stirring excerpts. The truth about Kadesh as one of the few battles that truly shaped world history is now known to us. The first great political treaty. Betwee

1929 GOD’S TROMBONES, by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON - SIGNED & INSCRIBED 1st UK RARE
GOD’S TROMBONES- Some NEGRO SERMONS in VERSE. By JAMES WELDON JOHNSON. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author. JAMES WELDON JOHNSON, on a blank prelim page: Louise and Ralph/ from James and Buell/ to mark the first/ mile post/ London. June, 29th, 1930” Interesting that James Weldon Johnson was in London in 1930. I wish I knew who LOUISE and RALPH and BUELL were. But I don’t. I’d like to think that Buell was“Buell G. Gallagher” Ralph was“Dr. Ralph Bunche” and that Louise was someone equally as notable, but again, I can’t seem to come to any confident conclusion. When you DO find out who these people were, I’m confident there names will enrich this book. Maybe. Published by George Allen& Unwin Ltd. Museum Street, London, 1929. First UK Edition, with the statement: First Published In Great Britain, 1929” on the copyright page, with no indication ... moreof additional printings. Hardcover book. Paper covered boards, embossed red lining on the front cover, red title labels on the front cover and spine, no dustjacket, 6.5” x 9” 58 pages plus an“Acknowledgements” page and a Colophon page at the rear. There is a small red price label(same color as the title and spine title labels) on the rear pastedown; it shows a price of“3s. 6d. GOOD condition. The covers’ have 1/4” of peeling/ fraying at the top of the spine, sunning to the rear cover(giving the brown paper covering a light purplish tint) fading to the spine label, and some rubs, scratches and scrapes; nonetheless these original covers are sturdy and the label printing remains bright. Internally the pages remain tight, bright, clean and unmarked. The inscription is bright and clear. There is a lot about James Weldon Johnson on the Internet. Including on Wikipedia. JOAN CRAWFORD FILM BOOK - WARMLY SIGNED & INSCRIBED Illustrated 1st Edition 1968
THE FILMS OF JOAN CRAWFORD. By Lawrence J. Quirk. A Lavishly Illustrated Filmography of the Great American Actress JOAN CRAWFORD. WARMLY SIGNED and INSCRIBED by JOAN CRAWFORD on a piece of HER PERSONAL. PRINTED STATIONERY/ NOTE-PAPER. Happy Birthday/ Pierre/ with love/ Joan” The note-paper is 4.25” x 5.25” It is light green and printed at the top in yellow and black. It is Inscribed and Signed by Crawford in blue ink. It is quite lovely. The note-paper was attached to the front free-endpaper by a couple of 3/4” x 3/4” stamp collector type hinge mounts. The mounts are no longer present. But they have left their stain on the front free-endpaper and a matching stain to the blank backside of the Signed Note-Paper. The mounts did no damage, other than leaving their age mark. The signed stationery/ note-paper is now laid-in loosely. Also laid-in ... morethe book is an unrelated note-card from the Consulate General of Switzerland to“Pierre” Dated 7.3.74. It is hand-written in German. I believe it has nothing to do with the Crawford book, but just happens to be laid-in this book. The book came from the estate of PIERRE RHEIN and PATRICIA MITAU. Who had three children all of whom took their father’s last name. Pierre Rhein was born in Switzerland. Patricia Mitau was born in San Francisco. Her mother was Marjorie Fleishhacker whose father was Herbert Fleishhacker, the famous Banker, Financier, Early California Baseball Team Owner, Bon Vivant, and Philanthropist. The Fleishhacker family is a very well-known San Francisco family. Any connection Pierre Rhein had with Joan Crawford might have come from the acquaintances of the family of his partner, Patricia Mitau, but I don’t really know. Hardcover Book in Dustjacket. 9” x 11” 222 pages. Illustrated throughout with b&w photographs from Crawford’s films. Published by Citadel Press, New York, 1968. First Edition, so stated. VERY GOOD book. Foxing to the top page edges(page edges of the closed book) otherwise just lightly used and still tight, bright, clean and unmarked; in

Originally the in-house organ of a golf club based near Paris. The unsuspecting members were initially delighted to have three more or less established writers take over its editorship. Early issues retain many of the adverts for waterproof clothing etc. However the three avant-garde writers and poets turn the issue away from golf and towards modern literature. Eventually the golf-club members retook control of their“Booster” magazine, forcing Perles, Durrell and Miller to release the final three issues under a different name, i.e. DELTA. It is a tale of the“American Dream” with all the bravado of Americas Greatest Self Promoter and Premier Showman. The Volume is especially desirable because of the signature of the Author and an inscription on the front free endpaper which reads“With the Authors Compliments/ 1879/ P. T. Barnum” This wonderful. Author Signed, Autobiography of P. T. Barnum is bound in its original, blind stamped, green colored cloth with gilt lettering and author's portrait at the spine. The binding is in excellent condition- clean and crisp- tight and sound with barely a hint of very light wear to the extremities only. The spine lettering and portrait are bold and crisp and unfaded. The interior pages are also in excellent condition- complete, tight and clean throughout.
