Granting 40 acres in Des Moines, Iowa. Signed twice Franklin Pierce, but those are secretary signatures not the President's. It has seal and for its age in great shape. More on the Cherokee War: While some Cherokee leaders still called for peace. Others led retaliatory raids on outlying pioneer settlements. The Cherokee finally declared open war against the British in 1759(but were fighting independently and not as allies of France) A number of Muskogee under Big Mortar moved up to Coosawatie. These people had long been French allies in support of the Cherokee pro-French faction centered in Great Tellico. The governor of South Carolina. This item is a wonderful. Original document dated 1767, Salisbury, North Carolina, where Daniel Dillon has been granted approval to purchase one acre of and along the Reedy fork, to build a public mill.signed by Committee members, Peter Dillon, Thomas Brown, Thomas Thornbrug Jr. and and Joseph Thornbrug. Document is 5x7, splits, irregular edges, in overall good condition. In 1767. Before the colonists decided to seek independence from England, Daniel Dillon built a small tub mill in North Carolina on Beaver Creek, and went into business grinding grain for the early settlers. The Earl of Granville had granted Dillon the tract of 552 acres on Reedy Fork and Beaver Creeks in 1755. Rowan County later granted him a license to build the mill in 1764. Rowan County court minutes from January 10, 1764 read: Ordered that Daniel Dillin have License ... moreto Build a Publick Grist Mill on the Reedy Fork of Haw River at the mouth of Beaver Creek. The mill was located in what is now Guilford County, which was created out of Rowan County in 1771. On February 10. 1781, during the Revolutionary War, British troops under General Cornwallis marched past the mill in pursuit of General Green who was encamped at Guilford Courthouse. Legend has it that British troops seized the mill to grind grain for the soldiers prior to the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781. And confederate officer in the American Civil War. Owens was a graduate of the University of North Carolina in 1856, and was elected mayor of Charlotte in 1861. During the American Civil War, he served as an officer in several North Carolina regiments in the Confederate Army. He was ultimately promoted to colonel in the 53 rd North Carolina Regiment. Owens was seriously wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania(1864) and later mortally wounded at the Battle of Snicker's Ferry(1864) in Virginia. J. C.J. Cowles was a business in Elkville. North Carolina, operated by Josiah Cowles(1791-1873) and his son Calvin Josiah Cowles(1821-1907) The Cowles family came from Connecticut to western North Carolina where they became prominent merchants and mine operators. Calvin moved to Elkville, at the time near the near the Caldwell& Wilkes county line, where he established J. C.J. Cowles. In the 1840s and 1850s, Calvin became involved in the roots and herb trade which became very profitable. LETTER 1860 - NEBRASKA TERRITORY NORTH CAROLINA CIVIL WAR SUCCESSION CRISIS
Type: Handwritten Letter. From: William A. Gwyer. To: Linus Scudder. Origin: Wilmington. North Carolina. Date: February 10 th. 1861. Size: about 5 x 7 3/4 inches. Content: Gwyer writes about land in the Nebraska Territory(probably near Bellevue. Sarpy County) He notes how the land was owned by the Sauntee Co. Sauntee Land and Ferry Company) but was purchased by him using a“land shark” Gwyer writes that the land has a stone hotel and a red sandstone quarry on it. He also writes about the city of Omaha and a man named“Mr. Hays” The second part of the letter deals with North Carolina during the succession crisis before the American Civil War. Gwyer thinks the state will leave with the other southern states, although he notes conservative feelings which will delay that decision, and disunion will become a established fact. He also writes about ... morethe“Peace Conference” Condition: Folds/ creases. Some rough edges, and some light soiling. Provenance: The letter comes from a collection of letters and papers related to Linus Scudder who was a prominent land developer and builder in the mid-19 th century. History: William Augustus Gwyer(1820-1905) was involved in real estate and the money lending business. Until he became a politician in the Nebraska Territory. Gwyer would hold several positions in Omaha and later in the territorial legislator. He was born in Middleton, Connecticut. Linus Scudder(1815-1881) was a New York City builder and land developer. It appears the land noted in this letter was same land disputed over in the U.S. Supreme Court Case: Langdon vs. Sherwood in 1888. The names Sauntee Land and Ferry Company and William A.
