The pouch itself is made of super thin and soft(though water( damaged leather, my guess is tanned deer skin. Indiana Native Americans Archaeological Survey of Marshall County - Archaeology
An Archaeological Survey of Marshall County. By Charles H. Faulkner. Indiana Historical Bureau. 1961. 102 Pages. Softcover. Dr. Glenn A. Black. Archaeological field director for the Indiana Historical Society conducted the survey. Marshall County is situated in the north-central part of Indiana. Bounded on the east by Kosciusko and Elkhart counties and on the north by St. Joseph County. The bordering counties to the west and south are Starke and Fulton counties, respectively. The first permanent white settlers of this area arrived in the early 1830’s. But the great influx of pioneer families from southern Indiana commenced in 1835. Although the civilization of the white man was now established in the county. The original inhabitants of the area still outnumbered the whites 2 to 1, for a rough estimate of the Indian population in 1834 was ... moreabout 1,500 Potawatomi. The Miami were supposed to have occupied the region before the Potawatomi. And an early county historian also mentions the Fox tribe as former residents of the Marshall County area. By the 1830s. However, the Potawatomi appear to have been the sole aboriginal occupants of this area. Almost all of these Indians were removed in 1838. The natural area was one of timbered areas and so-called wet prairies(marsh land) and dry prairies. The original natural vegetation was composed of a broadleaf forest with heavily timbered lands. Game was plentiful in prehistoric Marshall County. And even bison were said to have roamed the prairies before the arrival of the white man. The forest was stockaded with elk, deer, bears, wolves, wildcats, raccoons, opossums, rabbits, squirrels, and other game. The Tippecanoe and Yellow Rivers pass through Marshall County. Archaeological investigation reveals that there were two main areas of aboriginal occupation in Marshall County. The most important one was the sand dune area in the western part of the county. In fact. Almost all of the sites in the county are located on sand or sandy loam. The second main area was along the strea
Native Americans - A Linear Programming Model of Prehistoric Subsistence Indiana
A Linear Programming Model of Prehistoric Subsistence Optimization: A Southeastern Indiana Example. by Van A. Reidhead. Indianapolis: Indiana Historical Society. 1981. 276 pages. Softcover. Indiana Historical Society Prehistory Research Series Volume VI No.1. This monograph is a study of how people relate food resources to dietary goals and needs. As the vehicle of analysis. The author chose the mathematical modeling technique known as linear programming, because it was designed to identify how best to relate available resources to desired ends and to make explicit the conditions that determine the relationships between resources and desired ends. The study hypothesizes that during prehistory people practicing subsistence economies attempted to achieve an adequate nutrient intake at the lowest labor cost. The 7 chapters include: the Problem. ... moreLinear Programming Models, Data Base: The Leonard Haag Site, Reconstructing and Modeling prehistoric Animal and Plant Resources, the Models of ptimal Resources Utilized, the Test: Models vs observed, and Conclusions. 5 Appendices include Faunal Resources. Native Americans - Proton Magnetometry and Its Application to Archaeology.
Proton Magnetometry and Its Application to Archaeology. An Evaluation at Angel Site. By Richard B. Johnson. Indiana Historical Society. 1964. Indiana Prehistory Research Series volume 4. Number 2. 95 pages. Softcover. The magnetic character of a particular site arises from two phenomenon. The first being caused by fired soils, notable clays and the chemical changes of the ferromagnetic constituents of soil that take place in the presence of organic matter and increase the magnetic susceptibility of the soil. With the development of the proton magnetometer, it became possible to apply the technique of magnetic location to archaeological features. Dr. Glenn A. Black. Archaeological field director for the Indiana Historical Society, tested the proton magnetometer at the Angel Site archaeological site to determine whether or not more undiscovered ... morearchaeological features could be found. Photographs and line drawings accompany descriptions of the areas discovered by the instrument. I usually send materials within the next business day. Indiana - Eli Lilly: Archaeologist - Native Americans
Eli Lilly: Archaeologist By James H. Madison. Bloomington. N: Indiana University. 1988. 21 pages. Softcover. Indiana University Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology Researach Reports, No. 8, 1988) The importance of Mr. Lilly’s contributions to Indiana archaeology and history cannot be estimated. Two of the legendary Indianapolis businessman’s avocations- archaeology and history- build upon chronology. The order which Lilly turned his mind to them is significant. His serious interest in archaeology predated his productive years as a historian. The following pages trace Lilly’s maturing interest in prehistoric archaeology from the days when he bought items from“pot hunters. through the years when he assimilated the existing scholarship on Indiana and Midwest archaeology, and then moved ahead to formulate, mastermind, and underwrite an exemplary ... moreresearch and excavation program for his native state. Professor Madison does justice to the fascinating human elements of his story. He documents how Lilly grew remarkably in the second half of his life to use his considerable mental and material resources beyond the family pharmaceutical company and beyond personal indulgence. I usually send materials within the next business day. Unless there is a snowstorm, ice on the road, or I am on vacation, attending a genealogy conference, or doing research for a client. 1/2 lb Loose Leaf White Sage Smudge Native Americans
~ Product Description ~(1/2 pound) of Dakota White Sage- ARTEMISIA LUDOVICIANA LATILOBA. Common name(s)White Sage. Black Sage, Mountian wormwood,Western Mugwort. White Sage- Dakota Sage- ARTEMISIA LUDOVICIANA LATILOBA. Genus: Artemisia Species: ludoviciana Variety: latiloba Common name(s) White Sage. Dakota Sage, Black Sage, Wormwood, Mugwort. Our white sage is not"California White Sage. it is a much milder and mellower Dakota White Sage that was used by most tribes in the"Central Plains. It does not have the strong pungent scent of the"California White Sage, instead it burns with a mild sweet scent that many people prefer. This premium grade. Loose leaf Dakota White Sage is perfect for outdoor/indoor smudging of small or large spaces. How We Collect Our White Sage: Buffalo Trails Dakota White Sage was gathered. Sorted, trimmed ... moreand then tied into bundles by hand by a Lakota Sioux family. Our sage is gathered fresh from the wild prairies of Oklahoma. They were carefully dried to preserve the freshness of this wonderfully mild and purifying variety of sage. Only the top half of each plant is used and we always leave more than 50- 80% of the live sage in any harvest area in order to leave the live plants to finish thier life cycle and produce flowers& seeds as it was done in ancient native tradition. The plants are collected in such a way that the source is sustainable. For example this means not pulling up root systems. Harvesting just enough so that the plant will continue to thrive and generally caring for each plant source. Because of the scarcity of some of the traditional Native American herbs and plants we feel this attitude to be absolutely essential. How White Sage IS Used: Bundles of white sage branches are widely used for"smudging" A Native American tradition in which the top of the smudge stick is lit and the smoke which rises is wafted around the area to be purified. This herb is considered"sacred" by Native Americans who have used the wands or loose herbs for gene

The Native Americans, The Indigenous People of North America
Before Columbus came to America the population of the Native Americans- the First Aboriginal People was about five Million. By 1890 it was 250,000, during the same period white population in the U.S. increased from 0 to 75,000,000. As it did so, it usurped the ancestral lands of the Indians who had inhabited the continent for centuries, and destroyed both the delicate balance of their economy and an age-old way of life. Pivotal events such as the removal in the 1830's of the Southeastern Tribes to what was called Indian Territory, the long march of the Navajo to imprisonment at Fort Summer in 1864, and the tragedy at wounded knee in 1890 marked the advance of a new culture that by the end of the century had savagely replaced as much as older one. Knowledge is a wonderful thing to have. The other day I was talking to a man that said he ... morewas a computer graphics engineer, whatever that is, well you would think he would have a little bit of knowledge, in conversation we spoke of England, I mentioned that the last time I was in England I visited Stonehenge, he did not know what I was talking about, I thought he was joking but not. Then to see if he knew anything at all I asked him about the Great Wall of China, he had heard about it but didn't know anything about it, I then ask about the Terra Cotta Soldiers in China again nothing, so this guy knew how to turn on a computer but little else. I think READING A BOOK is a good way to curb IGNORANCE, don't you? Over 250 archive photos. Maps, color plates and art work, the Native Americans looks at various cultural aspects, beliefs, key individuals and historic events in the lives if many tribes and groups of Indians, photos from 1850 to 1894 have been selected from the National Anthropological archives and other sources. Original price of the book was $85.00. Buyer to pay $6.95 shipping within the Continental U.S.International buyers please ask for quote Shipping weight 3.9 pounds.

1970 We Talk You, Listen New Tribes Turf by Vine Deloria, Jr. Native Americans
We Talk. You Listen is strong. Boldly unconventional medicine from Vine Deloria Jr. 1933–2005) one of the most important voices of twentieth-century Native American affairs. Here the witty and insightful Indian spokesman turns his penetrating vision toward the disintegrating core of American society. Written at a time when the traditions of the formerly omnipotent Anglo-Saxon male were crumbling under the pressures of a changing world. Deloria’s book interprets racial conflict, inflation, the ecological crisis, and power groups as symptoms rather than causes of the American malaise: The glittering generalities and mythologies of American society no longer satisfy the need and desire to belong, a theory as applicable today as it was in 1970. American Indian tribalism. According to Deloria, was positioned to act as America's salvation. ... moreDeloria proposes a uniquely Indian solution to the legacy of genocide, imperialism, capitalism, feudalism, and self-defeating liberalism: group identity and real community development, a kind of neo-tribalism. He also offers a fascinating cultural critique of the nascent“tribes” of the 1970s, indicting Chicanos, blacks, hippies, feminists, and others as misguided because they lacked comprehensive strategies and were led by stereotypes rather than an understanding of their uniqueness. Vine Deloria Jr. Standing Rock Sioux. 1933–2005) was the author of more than twenty books, including Custer Died for Your Sins. Behind the Trail of Broken Treaties. And God Is Red. Suzan Shown Harjo(Cheyenne& Muscogee) is a poet. Lecturer, curator, columnist for Indian Country Today. Policy advocate, and president of the Morning Star Institute, a national Indian rights organization. One reader has written: Some thirty years after the fact. I read this and was transformed. As with everything Deloria has written, his early work is also masterful. Chapter eleven, The Artificial Universe, which outlines Euroamerican destruction of the biosphere and the consequent need to"listen to tribal people

Vice-President John Adams on Native Americans. Religion, Government and Society“It would be very consistent with the present professed Principles to destroy every Type and Press as Engines of Aristocracy. The Utensils and ornaments represented in the Drawings. Are great Curiosities, and seem to shew ... moremore skill in Arts, than any of the native Indians, at this day are possessed of. I am not enough in the habit of Antiquarian Speculations to hazard any Conjectures concerning them. I have never interested myself much in the Inquiries concerning the ancient Inhabitants of this Country, or the Part of the World from which they first emigrated. I should not be at all surprised. If hereafter evidence should be discovered that America was once a Seat of Arts Science and Civilization: nor should I wonder if any one should prophecy that Europe, will cease to be what it is and become as Savage and barbarous as America was three hundred years ago. The Temper and Principles prevailing at present in that quarter of the World, have a Tendency to as general and total a destruction, as ever befel Tyre and Sidon Sodom and Gomorrah. If all Religion and Governments all arts and sciences are destroyed the Trees will grow up, Cities will moulder into common Earth, and a few human Beings may be left naked to chase the Wild Beasts with Bows and arrows. Printing they say will prevent it. But it would be very consistent with the present professed Principles to destroy every Type and Press as
1946 magazine article INDIANS of Southeastern USA, Native Americans, color art
Selling is a 1946 magazine article about: Title: Indians of the Southeastern United States Author: Matthew W. Sterling Quoting the first page“This is the fifth in a series of authoritative articles by Dr. Stirling on the American Indian. Illustrated with W. Langdon Kihn's paintings, which are the result of careful study and extensive research. See, in the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE, America's First Settlers, the Indians, November, 1937; Indian Tribes of Pueblo Land, November, 1940; Indians of Our Western Plains, July, 1944; and"Indians of Our North Pacific Coast, January, 1945. Beginning with the first voyage of Ponce de Leon to Florida in 1513. Historical and descriptive material on the Indians of the Southeast is continuous and more abundant for the 16th century than for any other portion of the United States. Colorful accounts ... moreof the early Spanish. French, and English explorers reveal rich details of the customs and manner of life of the native inhabitants. By comparing the accounts of successive explorers. We can trace tribal movements, population trends, and changes in custom under the rule of the Spanish, the French, and the English. The Indian removal ordered by the United States in the first half of the 19th century brought an end to the real aboriginal life of the area. Gold drew most of the Spanish adventurers. But among them were some slavers, who found it easy to decoy the trusting natives on their ships and then sail off with them. Thus the Indians themselves were converted to gold. The American Indian made a poor slave. He languished quickly and often died in captivity. But the trade was not stopped until after the West Indies were nearly depleted of their native inhabitants. It seems certain that some of these slavers visited the Florida coast soon after Columbus reached the West Indies and well before the first recorded visit, which was that of Ponce de Leon. Maps of the Florida peninsula were published in Europe before this date. And more convincing evidence is the way in which the

Native Americans -Archaeology - Illinois the Zimmerman Site
The Zimmerman Site. Further Excavations at the Grand Village of Kaskaskia. By Margaret Kimball Brown. Springfield. IL: Illinois State Museum. 1975. 124 pages. Softcover. Reports of Investigations, No. 32) The Zimmerman Site is located in La Salle County. Illinois, near Starved Rock. The first historical record of occupation in the Starved Rock area of Illinois is to be found in the accounts of the exploration of the Missiissippi River in 1673 by Jolliet and Marquette. Near Starved Rock they found a village of 74 cabins occupied by the Kaskaskia subgroup of the Illinois Tribe. In 1675 Fasther Marquette returned to the village and established the first mission in Illinois country. During his return triip to Mackinac from the village. Marquette died. He was replaced at the mission by Father Claude Allouez who, in 1677, noted that the village ... morehad increased in size to 315 cabins and now contained not only the Kaskaskia but seven other subdivision of hte Ilinois tribe. This village with its poulation of seven to eight thousand persons. Was known to the French as the Grand Village of the Kaskaskia. The Grand Village remained near Starved Rock until the summer of 1680 when a large war party of Iroquois aproached. Since the village was unfortified and many of the men were away on war parties. The Illinos abondoned the location and move down river. The village was destroyed by the Iroquois. In 1682 La Salle built Fort St. Louis on Starved Rock and encouraged the Illinois to return to their former home. Which they did. La Salle attempted to build up a large Indian population in the area to keep out the Iroquois. And he succeded in attracting various groups of the Miami, Shawnee, and apparently small groups of Mohicans and Missouri. Although the other tribes departed within a few years. The Illinois remained in the area until the winter of 1691, when they moved to Lake Peoria. The Zimmerman site has been the focus for two separate projets. One in 1947 and one from 1970 to 1972. The first project was seen as an attempt to u
