And he logged the names of every customer and the items they purchased, as well as the amount of the transaction. Contains almost 400 pages. Very heavy and solid. Amazing patina. Several pages torn off near the back(already came this way when we acquired it) What makes this ledger unique. Apart from its inherent collectible value as an 1850s book, is that it contains several entries listing"Samuel Morse" as a customer, including the items he purchased. Samuel Morse, for whom Morse Code was named, was ... moreone of America's foremost inventors and was credited with making vital technological improvements to the telegraph. The leather is split on bottom edge of spine. Inside pages are tight and have age related foxing and staining. Complete with 100 pages. The name"Michael" is handwritten on an inside front page. The page edges are just starting to discolor some, but they have not succumb to brittleness, and there's almost no foxing. I actually didn't see any foxing, aside from a touch on the inside of the cover, but I also did not look at every single page so it's ... morepossible there's a minor spot or two hidden amongst them. The gold leaf on the top page edges, is still very much intact, and still has a great deal of luster. The binding is tight, and there are no loose or missing pages. This is a very nice antique book. This auction is for one of those rare 18 th century reprints. Measuring only 4 1/8 by 7 ½ inches. This 23 page book is complete. The covers are made from handmade 18 th century heavy gauge paper and then sewn together at the binding. I was not able to find a photograph of another example of this book showing the original binding. I believe the binding on the book in this auction is original. The pages are strong. But there are folded corners, foxing and toning, and edge damage. I have no idea what this rare American copy of Rest for a Wearied Soul is worth. Super Rare Antique George Mogridge Book- "Selections from Old Humphrey" 1853
Aside from this book missing the bottom half of the binding. This book is in very good condition. It was published in 1853 under the"Old Humphrey" pseudonym of George Mogridge by Carlton and Phillips. The old Humphrey books were enormously popular and aimed at children. The book has all it's pages(174p. and has some lovely illustrations. There is an inscription in the front along with some spotting. A real treasure! 1860 Antique Song Book sheet music rare Longfellow 1st?
This auction is for a wonderful antique songbook: The Nightingale- A Choice Collection of Songs. Chants and Hymns! It is from 1860. It is by W. O. and H. S. Perkins and was published by Oliver Ditson and Co. at 277 Washington St. in Boston. The book has a hard cover and is bound with a strip of very soft leather or paper. It measures about 5" x 7" and is around 200 pages long. The book is well worn. It has wear and tear from age. And a number of the pages are loose from the book. There are also some pages missing(but none of the songs listed below are missing) There is a name written inside the back cover that looks like Ambrose Devereaux of Springfield, MA. The book is"designed for the use of Juvenile Classes. Public School and Seminaries containing also a Complete and Concise System of Elementary Instruction. There are pages ... moreon Musical Notation, with scale diagrams, practical excercises, and more. The book contains well over 100 songs. I believe the music is for voice or piano? One of the rarer songs in the book is a chant for the poem The Reaper and the Flowers by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This poem was originally published in the book Voices of the Night in 1839. Music was made for the poem here by W. O. Perkins. Perhaps this is the 1st appearance of the poem set to music? Please see photo below.
