HANDWRITTEN MATH BOOK Manuscript Fraktur Calligraphy/Lancaster County PA 1839
FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY MANUSCRIPT MATHEMATICS BOOK. This terrific early volume was compiled from 1839-42 by Calvin Shaffner at Lititz Academy. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Volume is remarkable in every respect. From its sheer size[nearly 300 pages of handwritten entries] and the broad range of subjects covered, to the neatness of the hand writing and artistic flare of the compiler. This is one of those rare gems that should be seen to be fully appreciated. One of the more striking features is the fraktur inspired calligraphy which adorns volume throughout. Text contains numerous titles and page headings elaborately applied with an artistic flare seldom seen in early math cypher books. Another notable feature is the scope of subjects receiving detailed attention. Ranging from mathematics[mensuration of superfices, solids, cylindrical ... moreshapes, arithmetic, rule of three, vulgar fractions, algebra, cubical measure, etc. to the trades[bricklayer's work, mason's work, carpenter's work, slater's and tiler's work, plasterer's work, painter's and glazier's work, vaulted and arched roof's, etc. to business applications[interest, fellowship, loss and gain, custom house allowances, book keeping, journals, ledgers, invoices, expenses, etc. Every page is exploited to the fullest extent. Condition: Rare book remains in good condition[see images] Volume bound in original leather backed marbled boards with matching leather tips; cover worn with spine flaking and tips well chipped. Couple of loose leaves, generally clean internally. Folio contains contains about 283 pages of handwritten entries with many calligraphic embellishments; and measures approx 12" tall x 7.5" wide x 1.25" thick. Quite a find and a very worthy acquisition indeed. Payment and Shipping: Please see our feedback and bid with confidence. Never a reserve and very low opening bid as always. For international shipping quote. Please contact us. Bidders with no established feedback must contact us before
1905/07 Ledger~Lyon Hodil & Co. Dry Goods/General Store~Sligo, PA~Piney Township
This ledger is from the Lyon Hodil& Co. Dry Goods. General Store, Sligo, PA. Piney Township. Clarion County. It's dated from 1905-1907. Through research it seems as though the store during this period may have been owned by the Rhea family. The cover is cloth covered hardboard and is worn. The spine is barely attached to the cover. It is in good condition for it's age and daily use. 604 pages. I researched the town of Sligo. Pennsyvania, Piney Township and Clairion County. 8 Handwritten Diaries 1894-1902 O. Hess Fishing Creek Hazelton PA Teacher Mining
I want to start off by saying that on a weekly basis I get questions from bidders asking if I split up family lots of diaries and sell them separately. So I thought I’d post something to ease everyone’s mind before they buy. I am very passionate about diary collecting and history and I can’t even imagine buying a diary lot from one particular family and then splitting them up and selling each separately. Its heart wrenching when I see this happening and you have my promise that if I have more then one diary. No matter how many I have, I will always sell family lots together in one auction. But I think it’s a good question you should always ask your sellers just in case you want to try and keep a lot together. And with that said… Then I need to put that it is illegal by EBay’s rules to copy all or any part of the description here for purposes ... moreof selling elsewhere. Their policy is listed here; I have no problem at all with anyone purchasing my item and reselling it. However my description that I’ve worked hours on is not allowed to be copied by anyone for the above purposes. The main reason I write this is because I was contacted about a listing where someone had copied my exact auction and tried to sell a diary that they didn’t even have. It ended up being a fraudulent auction and I’m thankful they caught it in time. Thank you so much for your understanding. I have had these diaries for so many years now in my private collection. I wanted to read them and get them researched but there are way too many for me and far too full. There are 8 diaries total and every page is written on; extensively. Between the 8 diaries there are 1345 handwritten pages. All diaries are between 150-200 pages long. I don’t have time to pull quotes but did scan a few of the pages above so you can read them. I know there is so much information and historical entries in these diaries because as I was just browsing through them I came up with so many pages I could have quoted from or scanned from. The diaries all belonged to Oliver P. Hes

Dauphin County PA Sheriff/Coroner Journal/Ledger 1805-1807; Murder,Fornication++
DESCRIPTION Of significant historical importance to Dauphin County Pennsylvania and to life in early America. I am honored to offer this magnificently handwritten and detailed accounts of arrests, convictions, public office holders, etc. beginning 1805, ending 1807. Not clear on who kept this ledger, either the sheriff or coroner of Dauphin. The Coroner of 1805 was Obed Fahenstock, Esq. later Jacob Wain, Esq. The journal is full with every page being used. Without counting. I'm guessing there are 150- 200 pages, about 12.5" by 8" by 1" thick. Some charges are: Theft. Larceny, Assault& Battery, Tippling House(selling liquor without a license) Fraud, Murder, Fornication(a Lot of people met that charge! Bastardly, Adultery, etc. Some defendants were noted as being Negro and Ignoramus(a Lot of them too! Most interesting(to ... moreme) was a finding of guilt for murder with a sentence of"execution by hanging. To be hung by the neck until death. May God have mercy on his soul" Names of all Justice's Of The Peace and Township Constables are written several times in the journal. Names are also given for all those being charged and jury members that convicted or acquitted the defendants. Names are also given for each carriage ride or march to the Jail of Dauphin County. All calligraphy is in ink on thicker paper stock. No obvious signs of foxing. No torn pages. Some pages are loose, cover is also loose but it all appears to be complete and WOW! What and interesting find that would be a terrific resource for charting Dauphin County history and for any geneology project. This is a once in a lifetime offering. Good Luck! Please ask questions as needed! Check out my other items items! Thank you! Items are from estate sales and sold as found so Please review pictures and ask questions as needed Before bidding! Unique Pa German Groff Family Bible Record 1700s
You are viewing a rare and unique Pennsylvania German manuscript Bible record for the Groff family of Lancaster County. PA This page was removed years ago from a Bible and then mounted to cardboard with staples(see scan) The overall damage from the staples is minimal since they can be removed rather easily( had it been idiot Scotch Tape, the acid would have ruined the paper) The good news is that the inscription is intact, and that the records may prove invaluable to someone descended from this old illustrious Mennonite family. The sheet of paper measures 6 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches with German script on BOTH sides. We have not attempted to lift the old paper to show the back side but there is 1(one) entry on the back for a child of this same family. What you see here are the birth dates of babies, Marx(Marcus) 1757, Hans(John) 1778, Anna(1780) ... moreDavid(1782) and a later one on the back. It has been suggested that perhaps Marcus is the father of the others, since there is such a time span between him and the rest: he was old enough to start making babies in the 1770s, but this is just a suggestion, since many of these old Mennonites ran through several wives. In any case, here is genealogical information not found anywhere else and it looks as though the original family Bible may be destroyed. RARE.

WENKENBERG HIMMELSBRIEF - RARE TYPE OF PA GERMAN BROADSIDE - AMISH PRINTING
Several types of Himmelsbriefe(Letters from Heaven) were printed by Pennsylvania Germans. The most common one was supposed to have been delivered at Magdeburg(sometimes misspelled Madgeburg) in 1783. The rarest one was delivered at Wenkenberg(sometimes misspelled Wenkenburg) in 1721. In fact. The Wenkenberg Himmelsbrief is so rare that Edwin M. Fogel missed it entirely in his survey of Pennsylvania German Himmelsbriefe published in the German American Annals in 1908. This particular copy is from the collection of Dr. Don Yoder, who purchased it decades ago at Weaver's Bookstore in New Holland, Pennsylvania. Dr. Yoder translates the beginning of the text as follows: A Quite New Doleful and Veracious Statement of Warning from the Letter that Hung in the Air at Wenkenburg on the 29th of December 1721. This Letter God allowed to be seen, ... moreoutside and inside the city, so that no one knew on what it was hanging. But it was written in golden letters and sent from God through an angel. Whoever desires to copy it, to him it will lower itself; but whoever has no desire to copy it, it will fly away from him into the air. Please see my other listings for other Himmelsbriefe.

1862 Civil War Letter Camp Curtin PA Standoff w/Guns Officers
1862 Civil War Letter Camp Curtin PA Standoff w/Guns Officers This is a great Civil War letter from 1862 from a soldier at Camp Curtin in Pennsylvania. It is handwritten and 4 pages long and says in part: I enlisted the next week after I saw you though at the tat time I did not think I should. I went to Warren and stayed 4 weeks then to Camp Crossman at Huntington. Whence we came here about the last week of Nov. This is very old camp and very healthy. Our Regt is not filled up yet but it will be in a week or two when we shall go to Washington I think. There was an attempt made to consolidate us with Col Murray’s regt and throw out Col Curtis from his office but we armed ourselves with our pistols and knives, we have not got our guns yet, clubs and spades and told them we would fight till we died rather than obey the order… I suppose the Bucktails ... moreare satisfied now they have fought a battle they were always so eager for a fight. I am very glad they suffered so little. I hope their victories may always be as bloodless… Check out my! Be sure to add me to your!
