1894 Handwritten Diary Works on River Barge Backanan Fairview Park OH or Indiana
I want to start off by saying that on a weekly basis I get questions from bidders asking if I split up family lots of diaries and sell them separately. So I thought I’d post something to ease everyone’s mind before they buy. I am very passionate about diary collecting and history and I can’t even imagine buying a diary lot from one particular family and then splitting them up and selling each separately. Its heart wrenching when I see this happening and you have my promise that if I have more then one diary. No matter how many I have, I will always sell family lots together in one auction. But I think it’s a good question you should always ask your sellers just in case you want to try and keep a lot together. And with that said… Then I need to put that it is illegal by EBay’s rules to copy all or any part of the description here for purposes ... moreof selling elsewhere. However my description that I’ve worked hours on is not allowed to be copied by anyone for the above purposes. The main reason I write this is because I was contacted about a listing where someone had copied my exact auction and tried to sell a diary that they didn’t even have. It ended up being a fraudulent auction and I’m thankful they caught it in time. Thank you so much for your understanding. This is an 1894 diary that originally belonged to W. Buckanan of Fairview Park it only had 114 pages of handwritten entries. They all fall between June 6 th and September 26 th with an entry for every day between those dates. Actually there is one entry before that and I’ve quoted it below. On the inside front cover it says“Dedicated to C. L. S. June 5. 94. Then on the opposite page it says“W. Backanan Fairview Park. It could read Buchanan. I’ve scanned a close-up. I’m not positive of the location but I do know he works on a boat(barge) and because of the other places mentioned I thought it might be F

They cover the different counties of Ohio. You get to see drawings he made of what certain areas looked like in the the 1800's. if you live anywhere in Ohio or are interested in history, these are neat. These books were once owned by a Ziegler/zeigler of miamisburg Ohio. He had made notes where it looked like he had traced family roots, etc. I will leave those notes in with this books just in case you're interested. The books need rebound. 1897-1899 Handwritten Journal Diary - Charles Edney, Salem Oh - Daily/200 pgs.
This journal was written by Charles Edney. A house and barn raiser and mover, who lived in Salem, Ohio. In 1896, he married his wife Linnie, and I can find no record of any children during the time this was written. He faithfully kept this journal. Writing daily, for three full years. The journal begins on Jan1, 1897 and ends on Dec 31,1899. It is a record of his daily work activities, and he often added personal notes about his private life. Mr Edney was a Civil War veteran, and quite active in the GAR. He mentioned a few times about applying for a pension and wrote of a General Gordon from the south giving a lecture at a meeting of the GAR. He and his wife were active in their church, and attended many local funerals. Some were quite sad- children, and a couple who drowned. There are also mentions of lawsuits and trials. Mr Edney was active ... morein his local community, and was once sworn in as a security officer at the local fair. He was very social and wrote of dinners etc with friends. Much of the journal is about his business of raising houses and barns. And moving structures. I was surprised at how many homes, churches and businesses he moved as well as the number of major structural alterations he made to others- especially interesting to anyone from the Salem area. There are also many full names mentioned throughout. Mr Edney also used the journal for accounting entries. The journal measures 12" x 7 1/2" and is in good condition. Starting in 1831 and continuing to 1846, and then some scattered entries to the 1870's(Probably from a different business/farm) This business was located in the Poland, Ohio area, note that the heading POLAND/ POLAND OHIO is atop most pages. I see many entries related to clothing/ sewing and also broom making. Ledger predates most of the towns of Mahoning county. There are many dozens of names for the genealogy/ history lover. Everyone listed would have to be a pioneer of the area. There is a page near the front with a section cut out, see scan. I did not see the name of this business, but I did not scrutinize the ledger closely. I wonder if this business was a mill located on or near a canal? There are many pages from the 1830's. I did not check to see if any"McGUFFEY's" connected with McGUFFEY'S READERS are listed, I believe that that family came from the Poland area. There is one invoice which I scanned. INCREDIBLE item for a museum or collection, and it is PRICELESS HISTORICAL GEM. I see a 5" binding crack near the bottom, but the book is tight with no loose pages. Average" for age, I guess. Thanks for looking!

6 Handwritten Diaries Col William Welsh Mt Vernon OH 19th Reg US Colored Troops
I know that these diaries hold so much more than what I’m sharing here but I don’t have time to read them as they are extensive covering about 800 pages of writing between the 6 diaries. They range in date from 1856-1908. All of them belonged to Civil War Colonel William Welsh(1835-1912) Here is a small bio on him that I found on the web and the photos came also from that site as I just printed them up… 28 year-old William Welsh. From Mount Vernon. Ohio. Entered the Union Army on April 18, 1861 as a Private in Company A, 4th Ohio Volunteers. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in the same company. And then transferred to the 19th Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops. On December 15, 1863. He was subsequently promoted to Major and Lieutenant Colonel. Welsh was one of a number of soldiers whose hearing was permanently impaired by the roar of cannon ... morefire at the Battle of the Crater on July 30. 1864. He also contracted malaria and suffered from rheumatism as a result of his service. His pension file contains a statement by Colonel Joseph Perkins, 19 USCT, who said: on or about the 30th day of July 1864 at or near Petersburg. State of Virginia, said soldier incurred deafness of both ears from concussion while exposed under heavy and continuous cannonading; also on or about the 1st day of July 1865 at or near Brownsville, Texas, he contracted rheumatism by exposure, and about the 30th day following at the same place he contracted malarial poisoning. After the war. Welsh served in the regular Union Army as Colonel and then Brigadier General. His promotion to Brigadier General includes the comment: for gallant conduct during the war. And especially in the defense of the picket line at Bermuda Hundred, Va. The journals are large ledger size pieces measuring about 8” x 13” Three of them are from 1856-1858 when he was a young teacher and farmer in Mount Vernon. Ohio.
