I want to start off by saying that on a weekly basis I get questions from bidders asking if I split up family lots of diaries and sell them separately. So I thought I’d post something to ease everyone’s mind before they buy. I am very passionate about diary collecting and history and I can’t even imagine buying a diary lot from one particular family and then splitting them up and selling each separately. Its heart wrenching when I see this happening and you have my promise that if I have more then one diary. No matter how many I have, I will always sell family lots together in one auction. But I think it’s a good question you should always ask your sellers just in case you want to try and keep a lot together. And with that said… There are about 100 pieces of ephemera in this lot including a set of German mining scales. All of the pieces have ... moreto do with gold and silver mining around the Dutch Flat Mining District in Placer County California. Another mine in one in Oregon and a mine in Nevada. Dutch Flat has such an incredible history behind it and is now known as a“semi-ghost” town. I found the following information on one of the ghost town sites… Dutch Flat was 1st settled in 1851 by a group of German miners and the town was granted a post office in 1856. Thousands of miners worked the ridges. And the entire region is deeply torn by hydraulic mining, which was essentially water blasting with huge cannons known as"monitors" Besides it's prominence as a mining center, it was also a stage station, making it one of the largest, and most important towns in the county from about 1864 to 1866. In the fall of 1866, after the railroad had reached Cisco, 20 miles farther up the ridge, Dutch Flat lost much of its importance as a stage stop. During the 1870's, hydra-mining operations at Dutch Flat reached their peak. In 1872, the Cedar Creek Company of London purchased as many as 32 claims. And worked them on a gigantic scale. 1903 Gold Mining Journals Several Died Colorado Washington Drawing Sluice Box Drawings and Descriptions Killed Bear This is a really interesting set of 2 30 page handwritten journals from 1903 to 1910 Century dealing with gold mining in Colorado. Idaho, and Washington. This appears to be a memoir written from the original journal with the writer’s thoughts included at the end. It is original and was written soon after the death of the diarist. The first few pages are a dictionary of mining terms, a drawing of a sluice box and then a description of a sluice box. The next pages are a terribly interesting journal from George Grundy of mining that cost much of his party their life as they did discover gold but the journey eventually cost him his life as well as this part seems to be transcribed from someone he met weeks later. The writer then ... moreadds their postscript of the end of Grundy’s life. It is all handwritten and is fragile and should be treated gently. Here is a small sample of what is in the journal: We found Denver to be the great distribution point for a large section of country and especially for all supplies used in the mining camps. We had but little idea as to what was necessary for us to have further than food and transportation to our destination…We soon found a pack horses coming in from the Diggins for supplies and going out with their loads we paid close attention to every detail…made many inquiries as to where the best finds had been made at the end of that time we hired private conveyances to take us out to some of the diggings… Got an idea of how mining was carried on the tools required and what gold looked like in its crude form when found how the miners lived in camp and what a camp really looked like… Visited many camps and went along with Prospectors the woods so to speak was full of them. We learned very rapidly from seeing what others were doing. Finally we left the camps in search of new diggings we prospected on our own way many sandburs filly we struck a place that showed some pay dirt

Journal Exploring Mines Yavapai Co Arizona 1905 Mining Macintyre This is a great rare typed report from MH Ryan to Donald Macintyre from 1905. Ryan went to explore mines in Yavapai County. Arizona to help form a mining company with Macintyre. It is guaranteed original and in good condition. It says in part: I left Prescott eight in the morning and travel by good wagon road via Senator Divide where I gained an altitude of 7188 feet to the Copper King Group…after examining the group of mines thoroughly I arrived at the conclusion that it was not necessary to take a great many samples. As the ore in the different workings in each ledge is of the same character and uniform. I decided that three samples one from each of the three veins… The first claim examined was the red jacket where I found a large rich vein of copper and gold bearing ore. ... moreBut with very little work done thereon consisting of some open cuts and prospect holes… The next claim was the Golden Fleece where I found a tunnel running in a southerly direction into the foot of the hill…At the bottom of this shaft I encountered a four foot vein of solid ore from which No 1 sample assay of which is enclosed was taken. In character this ore is azurite. Yellow copper sulphites, black sulphites of copper and red oxide of copper and from indications it is the outcroppings of an immense body of ore… This sample ran something higher than I anticipated yet while mortaring the sample I discovered that it contained particles of free gold. This sample came from a strong vein well defined… Proceeding to the Copper King claim I found an excellent site for a mining camp with a well of good water and also a good location for a smelter adjoining the camp site. There are well defined silver bearing ledges upon this claim from one of which sample No 2 assay of which is enclosed was taken… At the last claim of the group examined. The Atlantic, showing a good vein of gold bearing quartz… A first class stage line carries the US Mail and passengers daily each way over the latter

Yukon Gold Rush Archive from 1897 personally documenting the adventures of R.H. Hall. A Deputy County Assessor of Los Angeles California, from his home departure to his Yukon Gold Mine stake outside of Dawson City, Yukon and then his return home. The collection includes; handwritten journal, 3 Imperial Cabinet card photos of the fur clad miner(two with a handful of gold nuggets) tintype photo of a young Hall, 3 landscape photos of the Northwest Coast, typed letter of recommendation from a law firm in his home state of California, a"Dominion of Canada Free Miner's Certificate" newspaper clippings of the period supporting his narrative and a final collection ... moreof newspaper clippings documenting his ending career in the judicial system. The handwritten manuscript describes in great detail his trip from Long Beach California to his mining stakes outside of Dawson City in Yukon Canada during the great Yukon gold rush. The manuscript appears to have been written as a recap shortly after his return home from the year long journey. Hall was a good writer and his text is generally well composed. He compiled the narrative by hand PRINTING it(mostly in blue ink) which makes the journal a much easier read than typical cursive written manuscripts. Pages of the handwritten journal total 39 with the balance of book filled with newspaper clippings. R.H. Hall left his home. Amidst criticism of the journey, on August 16, 1897. He travelled by ship and boat to San Francisco, and then to Seattle WA. He planned to winter there but the"buzz" about the Gold Rush compelled him to press on immediately. At this point, Hall lists in minutiae the supplies he procures for the remaining trip. He then boards a steamer to Juneau Alaska with 180 horses and 200 other outfits heading for the gold fields. History: Bayliss was the general manager of the The Montana Co. limited) which was a British company involved in gold mining in Montana and was involved in a major legal battle with the St. Louis Mining and Milling Co. over the rights to the Drumlummon that was purchased from mining mogul Thomas Cruse. A.M. Holter& Bro. was a lumber dealer ... morein Helena founded by Anton M. Holter(1831-1921) and his brother. Martin Holter(1835-1920) Anton was a Norwegian immigrant who basically founded the lumber business in Montana. Marysville was basically considered a Ghost town, until 2010 when gold was discovered again. Anton M. Holter Below from: Magazine of Western History. Volume 14. 1891 Anton M. Holter was born at Moss. A small farming and fishing village on the eastern shore of Christiania fiord, Norway, June 29, 1831. He was the third in a family of five, having two brothers older and a brother and sister younger. His mother being left with scant means of support, he went to live with a maternal uncle, a farmer, and remained with him until he was seventeen years of age. He learned to read fairly well, and to make his letters, and thus was qualified to be confirmed as a member of the Lutheran Church at the age of fifteen. Up for auction today is what is known as a Letter Book. Before these technological times. In order to have a copy of your letters, you would write in these thick books that had tissue paper and with the use of carbon paper, each letter written would have its own copy. So these are the original copies of his letters written, both personal and business. Remember, these are the actual carbon copies, not the letters themselves(although there are a quite a few regular loose letters that I found between the pages. There are a total of 497 used pages used in this book that date between 1894-1900. The best thing about this journal of copied letters is that it belonged to a very prominent man by the name of Joseph Bradford Hardon; whom I might add was married to the second cousin of President Cleveland. Before I get to the actual letters themselves ... moreI found an obituary on the web taken from a 1902 book about Harvard College and its graduates and I quote… Joseph Bradford Hardon died suddenly at this home in Cambridge January 1 st. 1902. Hew was born in Attleboro. Mass, was March 31 st. 1834 and thus the oldest member of our class. His father, comfort Hardon, moved his family to Martinsburg. Va. In 1841. He was the proprietor of various stage lines, till the opening of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad ruined that business. Comfort Hardon was the son of Jacob Hardon. Who served in the Revolutionary War. Our classmate’s mother was Anna Hall Field. He lived in Virginia some ten years and began early to impart to others what he had learned in the usually poor schools in the vicinity of his home. The school that he taught in 1852 in Falling Waters was held in the edge of the woods in a log-house“chinked and daubed. whose furniture was of the rudest description. After studying the common branches, he essayed Latin and Greek, under the tuition of Presbyterian clergyman. His schematics and reports appeared in numerous books and ... morepublications. Many of the pieces are very large. Such as 54 x 29, some over 5 feet long. There are 41 large drawings, and 46 smaller. Most are identified as to what coal company they are for and most signed and dated by Althouse. RARE Antique Lot Pabst Mine Disaster 1926 Ironwood Michigan Oliver Iron Mining
This is a wonderful lot from the scrapbook of Glen Locker(Duluth. MN) past commander of the American Legion and of the Naval Reserve American Legion Band. This lot contains information from the Pabst"G" Shaft mine disaster of 1926. Photos are of Tom Trewartha, shift boss in charge of the 42 miners who were entombed on the 7th level and Mr. Gregory of the Bureau of Mines. Trewartha is being presented with a medal by Gregory. Also includes a few letters, one of which is by the Oliver Iron Mining Company. Great pieces of memorabilia! Some scratches, scuffs and wear to the cover, but not bad at all. For being such a large, heavy book, and being over a hundred years old, it is in surprisingly nice shape, I think!
