The great senator from S.C. taught me to hate Jackson and Van Buren. I say taught because his denunciations were founded on facts and I could follow him step by step and know and feel that he had justice on his side-It was not strange that Mr. C. should supp

1864 Letter Noyes Slave Teacher South Carolina Accident Wreck
1864 Letter Noyes Slave Teacher South Carolina Accident Wreck Wife of William Francis Allen Mary Lambert This is a letter from Catherine Porter Noyes to her family from South Carolina where she was working with the freed slaves to Boston. Katy was a teacher for the freed slaves on St Helena Island in South Carolina during the Civil War. We sold most of this collection earlier this year but have just found these letters. The letter is half written by her and the other half is written by Mary Lambert Allen. The wife of William Francis Allen who were both working alongside of Noyes in South Carolina. William was an author and educator and wrote an important work on songs of the slaves. It is handwritten and is 4 pages long. It says in part: I intended to have gone home in the steamer that sailed last Saturday for after I heard of your dangerous ... moresickness I felt that I did not stay here a moment longer. I had my trunk all packed and was on the way to the boat when the horse took flight and ran and I jumped out and hurt myself…All this week I have been hoping to go in the one that sails day after tomorrow but M and I have finally decided that I can hardly take it for another week…with all love your Katy… She(Katy) is unwell today…in addition to her general lameness and bruises leave her in a poor condition to travel. It is useless to try to write a very detailed account of the accident in a week she will tell you all about it… She decided last week that she would go by that steamer and William. Miss Rice and I thought we would go to Hilton Head with her…Last Friday morning we started Katy and Miss Rice in our wagon driving Drayton and Mr Hinckley and I in another with Concord. We felt that if there was any danger it was with Concord as she is so very lively but Drayton was not properly harnessed he had neither breeching nor holdbacks so that in going over ladies’ bridge the wagon struck him. He ran and Katy jumped out but caught her hoop and fell between the two axels under the carriage but neither of the wheels touc

Also known as the Florida Wars, were three conflicts in Florida between the Seminole— the collective name given to the amalgamation of various groups of native Americans and the blacks who settled in Florida in the early 18th century— and the United States Army. The First Seminole War was from 1814 to 1819(although sources differ) the Second Seminole War from 1835 to 1842, and the Third Seminole War from 1855 to 1858. They were the largest conflicts in the United States between the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. The first conflict with the Seminoles arose out of tensions relating to General Andrew Jackson's attack and destruction of Negro Fort in Florid

1796: The Public Laws of South Carolina ex. Collection Of Col. John Mitchell
This is an AS-IS book. I'm going to first describe the book and then explain why I think it's historical. Stains to both covers. Spine has loss at top and more at bottom. Spine title was double stamped in places. Pgs 53-66 have 3" tears from top. Pgs 83-92 have tears. Pgs 159-172 have 7" tears from top. Pgs 205-208 have 3" tears from top. Pgs 351-364 have 5" tears from top. Pgs 397-400 have 4" tears. Pg 221 is incorrectly listed as 121. Pg 293 is incorrectly listed as 193. Pg 368 has a bit of ink underlining. MOST IMPORTANTLY. Pages 453-488 ARE MISSING. Definately, AS-IS. Now as to why I think it's historical. Throughout the book is the signature of John Mitchell and I have to think if you owned the book you had need for it and Col. John Mitchell of Charleston was a Notary Public and Magistrate and I think ... morethat would justify the need for the book. A great site on Google states he was a friend of George Washington and was famous in the Scottish Rite Masons. So much so that in 2001 he was listed as 1 of 11 men noted as"Gentlemen of Charleston" The site also states that he will be remembered as"the one who succeeded in starting the Supreme Council for the 33rd degree in the United States" So, that's it. AS-IS condition and hard-to-find book which possibly was in the collection of an important person in Charleston, South Carolina. 1826 DAVID COWEN ESTATE INVENTORY w 8 SLAVE SALES, LAURENS SOUTH CAROLINA SC ?
1826 DAVID COWEN ESTATE INVENTORY w 8 SLAVE SALES. LAURENS SOUTH CAROLINA SC? Description: PLEASE CLICK HERE TO SEE OUR OTHER ITEMS CURRENTLY LISTED ON EBAY. Dated December 14. 1826 ink manuscript estate inventory of David Cowen. Six pages of line entries briefly describing the item. The purchaser and the price. Significant in the inventory is the sale of 8 slave children, each listed individually by name. Sadly, their casual appearance in a long list of goods such as corn, a spinning wheel, a side saddle, etc. demonstrates their calloused treatment merely as property- quite valuable though as the associated selling prices are among the highest in the inventory. Many of the purchasers appear to be family members as the individuals with the Cowen surname include; John, Anna, James, Francis, David and Rebbecca. Some brief online research located ... morea David"Cowan" who died in November 1826 in Laurens, South Carolina(the Piedmont Upstate region in the northwest corner) Note that this document could benefit from further research and I cannot guarantee this is the estate of the David Cowan from Laurens. The surname spelling is varied in records including Cowin, Cowan, Cowen. Per the reference, the deceased(David) had a son James who was married to Francis. In his will, he listed legatees as: James, John, Francis, Celia(wife) Anne, Rebecca and Magdeline. As you can see, the 7 will legatees include the names of all 5 of the Cowan purchasers in this inventory(assuming our"Anna" is the same as"Anne" in the will. It would also make sense that one of the legatees, his wife Celia, would not have the need to appear as a purchaser in the inventory. As an aside, one purchaser of a slave and a side saddle had the unusual name of Pleasant Shaw. I located a Pleasant Shaw Plantation in Bunkie, Louisiana and it appears Pleasant moved around a bit. A native of Alabama, he shows as a plantation owner in 1860, having taken a slave as his wife" The census lists him as"living with Harriet, black, and s
