Texas Galveston City Bay 1852 by Mitchell antique engraved hand color map Map of the State of Texas Issued 1852. Philadelphia by S.A. Mitchell Fine original ... moreantique engraved map. Printed in the mid-19th century, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. With original hand color. In Fair to Good or better condition. Light minor age wear, small soiling or staining and uniform toning but overall very presentable and attractive[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting antique map which will look nice when displayed. Sheet measures c. 8 5/8" H x 11 1/4" W. Printed area measures c. 7 7/8" H x 10 1/2" W. 34966] Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Please look carefully and make your decision knowing this antique image is nice. But it is not in perfect"like new" condition. However, with whatever flaws it possesses, it remains entirely worthy of ownership and inclusion in any related collection. We feel it will prove very pleasing to its new owner. We stand behind everything we sell. Everything we offer is guaranteed to be an authentic original antique item as described. We do not sell modern reproductions. Please visit our. We happily accept PayPal! WE OFFER FLAT RATE

1900 UNCLE TOM'S CABIN === ARRANGED FOR YOUNG READERS === This auction is for an original 1900 1ST EDITION, THUS of" UNCLE TOM'S CABIN" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. As published into a special abridged edition just 4 years after Stowe's passing on July 1. 1896. Y OU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK! I t is dominated by a single theme: the evil and immorality of slavery. Stowe emphasizes the horrors of slavery on almost every page of the novel while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as the enslavement of fellow human beings. U nlike the 1852 1st edition. Published by John P. Jewett& Company in two separate volumes, this special First ALTEMUS' YOUNG PEOPLE'S LIBRARY EDITION! contains VOL. 1& 2 combined into one book. I t is beautifully illustrated with over 90 ILLUSTRATIONS! by ... morecelebrated artist of the time. U pon publication. Uncle Tom's Cabin ignited a firestorm of protest from defenders of slavery(who created a number of books in response to the novel) while the book elicited praise from abolitionists. Southern reactions ranged from forcing a bookseller in Mobile. Alabama to leave town for selling the novel to sending threatening letters to Stowe herself(including a package containing a slave's severed ear) The novel had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the United States, so much so in the latter case that the novel intensified the sectional conflict leading to the American Civil War. The book also helped create a number of stereotypes about Blacks, many of which endure to this day. These include the affectionate, dark-skinned mammy; the Pickaninny stereotype of black children; and the Uncle Tom, or dutiful, long-suffering servant faithful to his white master or mistress. In recent years, the negative associations with Uncle Tom's Cabin have. To an extent, overshadowed the historical impact of the book as a"vital antislavery tool. In the first year of publication, 300,000 copies of Uncle Tom'

LIFE AT THE SOUTH OR"UNCLE TOM'S CABIN" AS IT IS BEING NARRATIVES SCENES. AND INCIDENTS IN THE REAL"LIFE OF THE LOWLY. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ T his auction is for an original 1852 FIRST EDITION! of" LIFE AT THE SOUTH: OR"UNCLE TOM'S CABIN" AS IT IS" by W. L. G. Smith. YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK! I t is the story of a Negro slave who escapes and flees north to the"Promised Land. He freezes. T his pro-slavery book is a direct rebuttal to"Uncle Tom's Cabin. and is called by the author the real"life ... moreof the lowly. The author presents his view of the relations between"master and slave" and defends the stand of the South towards the matter of slavery. A nti-Tom literature refers to the 19th century pro-slavery novels and other literary works written between 1852 and the Civil War in response to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Also called plantation literature. These writings were generally written by authors from the Southern United States. B ooks in the genre attempted to show that slavery was either beneficial to African-Americans or that the evils of slavery as depicted in Stowe's book were overblown and incorrect. T hey adopt a variety of polemical strategies. From defending the plantation as a good place, to attacking the North for its treatment of"white slaves" the working class) to depicting blacks as either happy in slavery or racially unfit for freedom. None of these novels reached the success of Stowe's book, but some went through a number of printings and were widely read in the North. As a group they're interesting for several reasons- for what they say about race and about sectionalism, and for what they
