SCARCE! A fabulous illustrated history of Los Angeles City and County. Photographed in the late 1800s. This is LOS ANGELES CALIFO RNIA, ILLUSTRATED. An oblong softcover in wraps designed to show prospective residents" Homes. Public Buildings, Business blocks, Parks andGeneral Views. It was issued by Kingsley-Barnes& Neuner Co. With the Chamber of Commerce. Compiled by C.M. Davis and T. Newman, the book is undated, with no copyright or printing history, but the text gives us a clue as to its age. Also, presumably, a First Edition. The illustrated cover is Art Nouveau in style- with Pan playing to the birds- likely in an orchard in Los Angeles. This large. Unpaginated book is full of historic photographs of Los Angeles prior to the Turn of the Century. Credited photographers include W.H. Hill, C.R. Staples& J.R. A Putnam-now familiar ... morenames in Los Angeles. The photos show very impressive Los Angeles homes, businesses, hotels, parks, schools, churches& even a synagogue. Street views are included, as are photos of the electric railroad cars& train depots. Also photos of Santa Catalina Island, The Ostrich Farm& amazingly, The West Glendale Winery. Also. An early photo of the USC Medical Building, and a private surgical hospital. So much to see and savor! We can speculate on a date. Since the text references the Census of 1890. It also promotes an upcoming civic event: The Horse Show Association of Southern California will hold its first annual exhibition during the month of January. 1899. This leaves us with the assumption the book was published after 1890 and before 1899. I couldn't find another one like this on the internet. The book is in fair-good condition. Given its age. That's remarkable! The front cover, which is torn on the right corner, is detached; easily rebound. The text is clean& unmarked, with just a small stain that appears on 5 pages on the bottom of the photos. Given the book's age, the interior is in very good condition.
