Fascinating. Original, 1858-1861 Manuscript Ledger belonging to Wanton Shippee, a Dry Goods/ General Store Proprietor from Usquepaugh, Rhode Island(Washington County) This amazing, original manuscript ledger measures approx. 8 ½” x 13” and contains approx. 455 pages of accounts related to various goods typically sold by a mid 19th century Dry Goods Shop. We have only given this account book a cursory examination- it came to us with a number of other early New England ledgers which we have sold over the past several years. The Ledger covers the period September 8. 1858 through some time in August 1861. Accounts were kept for local residents with family names that included, Bagley, Durfee, Knight, Barbar, Palmor, Shippee, Munroe, Woodmansie, Hoxsie, Greene, Briggs, Whitehorn, Read, Clark, etc. Each account lists the name of the person, ... morethe goods or services rendered and the amount due. There is often notations indicating that the account was settled. VG Old Antique LG Leather 1854 Leather Webster's Dictionary, Pre Civil War
Here's a very nice antique or early large leather bound book or volume. The 1854 publishing of Webster's Dictionary. This dictionary was first published by Noah Webster in 1840, then updated and published in 1847 and then updated and published in 1854. The process of revisions and enlargements were provided by Chauncey A. Goodrich of Yale College at the time. This volume is very large at about 10.5 by 8.5 inches in face dimension and 4 inches thick. It has about 1400 pages and at the time of it's publication it sold for $6, quite a bit of money in the pre Civil War period. This one has been well kept considering it's age and period of manufacture. The leather cover shows some signs of age, cover hinges are good and intact, binding of the pages is very nice and the pages themselves are nice as well. My guess is these were published ... morein low quantities in the 1850's and somewhat rare. A very nice example overall of an early american dictionary. That's about it. This is an original leather bound soldier's book for the United States. This book was printed for the U.S. Army by the Stationary Hall Press of New York in 1838 and issued by the authority of the war department. This is a rare book to find and is in exceptional condition. There are no rips or tears, but there is some discoloration due to age of the paper. The leather cover is in very good condition and is signed for the soldier that this particular book was issued too. This book was intended to document a soldiers entrance into the Army and the supplies he obtained, It also contains rules of conduct for the soldier. The book measures 8x3 inches when it is closed.

Most are for food or how to raise poultry and that sort of thing but interestingly there are recipes to make things like paregoric. Assuming you could go to the store and buy opium. The binding is cracked which means the first 1/4 of pages are loose but intact. If you're looking for a beautiful book to sit on your shelf and look nice. This one isn't for you. This is for the person who wants to try out recipes that were written in hand that is readable before the Civil War. The book itself is in fair at best. Condition. If you are interested in chemistry and in experimenting with old time recipes, or in publishing an old recipe book from the south pre-Civil War, this book is for you. How about a nice liver pudding? Or pineapple ... morepreserves? What about Confederate pudding or a variety of beers and wines? This leather book was apparently a receipt book in its first incarnation. In those days. Nothing went to waste. BOOK This is an 1846 Cobb's Spelling Book. Being A Just Standard For Pronouncing The English Language, by Lyman Cobb, Revised Edition, Published by Mack, Andrus, Co, Ithaca, N.Y. The book appears to have wood cover which has a gray/green paper cover. There are chips to the wood corners and a split on the front side edge and some of the paper has small pieces missing around the cover edges. The spine is cloth covered and has splits/small pieces missing. There is one interior page missing, evidence of moisture marks, age spots/discoloration of pages, penned words on the inside cover, blank cover pages on the front and back have tears/small piece missing and one interior page missing. Interesting spelling book with pronunciation guides as well as Easy Reading Lessons, proper names in the New Testament and some useful tables with the names ... moreof cities, counties, town, rivers, lakes, etc. of the United States.
