WENKENBERG HIMMELSBRIEF - EXTREMELY RARE TYPE OF PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN BROADSIDE
Several types of Himmelsbriefe(Letters from Heaven) were printed by Pennsylvania Germans. The most common one was supposed to have been delivered at Magdeburg(sometimes misspelled Madgeburg) in 1783. The rarest one was delivered at Wenkenberg(sometimes misspelled Wenkenburg) in 1721. In fact. The Wenkenberg Himmelsbrief is so rare that Edwin M. Fogel missed it entirely in his survey of Pennsylvania German Himmelsbriefe published in the German American Annals in 1908. This particular copy is from the collection of Dr. Don Yoder, who purchased it decades ago at Weaver's Bookstore in New Holland, Pennsylvania. Dr. Yoder translates the beginning of the text as follows: A Quite New Doleful and Veracious Statement of Warning from the Letter that Hung in the Air at Wenkenburg on the 29th of December 1721. This Letter God allowed to be seen, ... moreoutside and inside the city, so that no one knew on what it was hanging. But it was written in golden letters and sent from God through an angel. Whowever desires to copy it, to him it will lower itself; but whoever has no desire to copy it, it will fly away from him into the air.
1799 Ephrata PA FRAKTUR Pennsylvania GERMAN Americana BAPTISM Taufschein VARIANT
FEATURING A RARE PRINTED HAND COLORED FRAKTUR BAPTISM CERTIFICATE- TAUFSCHEIN- FOR THOMAS UMPENHAUER. BORN IN 1799! Printed by S. Samuel) Baumann. Ephrata, PA. RARE VARIANT. ONE OF ONLY THREE KNOWN IN THE WORLD! SEE BELOW! This Baptism certificate is for Thomas Umpenhauer. Son of Johannes& Frau Margarett, born Dec 16th 1799. The writing is a s shown. Attractively framed. Linen backing, not mounted. Features exquisite primitive style hand-coloring; hand-lettered; in an inprinted form. The main text. One verse and the imprint in Fraktur are within a heart in the center of the document. Above the imprint is a pair of birds perched on flowers in a vase. Two additional verses in Fraktur are within small hearts in the lower corners. From each of them protrudes a leafy branch with a bird. In the upper corners and center are several leafy stems ... moreof flowers, including tulips. On the sides are two stars. In the lower corners are two springing deer, and in the lower center are two flowers. Fraktur is in decent condition, maintaining its crude colors with some creases and edgewear. Measures roughly 16" x 18.5" in frame. WHAT MAKES THIS UNIQUE IS THAT THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE PRINTED VARIANT. NOTED ONLY BY A SMALL SIZE DIFFERENCE IN THE DESIGN OF THE LARGEST HEART. One of the border pieces counting from the base up(approximately 24 pieces) is LARGER than the other pieces. Catalogue Reference: KS 270.2(Volume II page 209 of The Printed Birth and Baptismal Certificates of the German Americans) Only two copies of this var iant are known to exist. Making this a truly rare find! This is our copy. Noting closely here the variance: You can see in this more common specimen that the variant does not exist: Posted with-

PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN Broadside c1850 Magic HIMMELSBRIEF Heavens-Letter MAGDEBURG
NP. Reading. PA, between 1880 and 1900] The Himmelsbrief. Or heavenly-Letter, in the Pennsylvania German community, they are part of Pow-wow tradition and contained religious verses and other charms and assurances that their owners would be protected from death, injury, and other misfortune. Pow-wow practitioners charged handsome sums for these magical letters; the price they commanded depended on the reputation of the practitioner. However, some traditions call for it to be given free of charge. This decorative specimen contains no printers imprint. Although it matches records and description on Worldcat for an imprint of Reading PA sometime around the end of the 1800s(last lines match, deco border, etc) It measures 12" x 8.25" Illustrated with an attractive portrait of Jesus at the top, with an engle blowing a horn on each side, ... moreas well as a decorative border. Of home foreclosures and lost jobs and frozen credit, what protection is available to the average American? For several centuries American homeowners had insurance in the form of a printed document called a Himmelsbrief—or Letter from Heaven. Carried on the person. Especially in time of war, or framed and installed in the farmhouse, the letter was believed to furnish protection of many sorts. Letters from heaven were sold at fairs and markets in the towns and peddled through the countryside. Dozens of versions, in German or English, were printed and sold during the 19th and 20th centuries, and even today variants may be found. The letters were typically framed and displayed in the house for protection, although a family might turn the text to the wall in the event of a visiting pastor, since many clergymen considered s

This historically important Volume measures approx. 5 1/4” by 7 1/8” and contains 277 pages plus a folding map of the Pennsylvania Oil Region. ... moreThe history of the Petroleum Industry in the United States goes back to the early 19th century. Although the indigenous peoples, like many ancient societies, have used petroleum seeps since prehistoric times; where found, these seeps signaled the growth of the industry from the earliest discoveries to the more recent industry. Petroleum became a major industry following the oil discovery at Oil Creek Pennsylvania in 1859. On August 28, 1859, George Bissell and Edwin L. Drake made the first successful use of a drilling rig on a well drilled especially to produce oil, at a site on Oil Creek near Titusville, Pennsylvania. The Drake well is often referred to as the"first" commercial oil well, although that title is also claimed for wells in Azerbaijan, Ontario, West Virginia, and Poland, among others. Historians have noted that the importance of the Drake well was not in being the first well to produce oil, but in attracting the first great wave of investment in oil drilling, refining, and marketing. The success of the Drake well quickly led to oil drilling in other locations in the western Appalachian mountains. Where oil was seeping to the surface, or where salt dri

Antique 1894-1911 Pennsylvania Lumber/Coal Company Ledger Payroll Rents More
Antique 1894-1911 Lumber/Coal Company Accounts Receivable/Payable Ledger This antique ledger is that of a business that seems to have sold lumber and coal located in Darby. Pennsylvania. For the most part, the ledger contains the accounts receivable/payable records of the time period beginning 1900 through 1911 with a record of rent income received in the back of the book beginning in 1894. Most of the entries are done in beautiful calligraphy of this time period. The records show freight shipments/goods received. The cost of different wood/timber including items such as Hemlock, Mining Planks and more. Also documented are business expenses and the payment made to various companies for services rendered. It also contains payroll information for employees. Hours worked, amount paid, less expenses noted, such as“store” or“rent” ~ They must ... morehave had some type of living quarters/rooms at or near the work location as well as some type of store ~ all so interesting! Further in the back of the book. There is a section for the rent account with records as early as 1894. The book measures 9” wide and is 14” in height. The first few pages contains a section broken down alphabetically and the remainder of the book are ledger pages. All of which have writing. I see no blank pages. The cover is in extremely poor condition ~ it was at one time taped on the interior. The leather, suede is in a state of deterioration. The pages of course are browning with age and there are some tears but for the most part, the interior is in very good vintage condition. Don’t hesitate to send an email if I have missed anything. If you have further questions or need additional photos ~ I am happy to help ~ IMPORTANT INFORMATION: I am using the Ebay shipping calculator however. I will ship using the least expensive method and always provide a refund for any overpayment. I am not trying to make money on shipping, nor do I want to loose money, therefore, shipping estimate can be less once packaged. Thanks Much ~ Judi

PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN Broadside CMB Magic HIMMELSBRIEF Heavens-Letter MAGDEBURG
NP. Cologne/PA; circa 1780-1820 The Himmelsbrief. Especially in time of war, or framed and installed in the farmhouse, the letter was believed to furnish protection of many sorts. The document was universal among the Pennsylvania Dutch, as well as among the Dutch Diaspora in the South, the Midwest, a

QUAINT IDIOMS AND EXPRESSIONS OF THE PENNSYLVANIA GERMANS by Monroe Aurand, Jr.
WELCOME TO GRACIE'S BOOKS! By A. Monroe Aurand. Jr. Revised Edition. The Aurand Press,Lancaster, Penna. The Pennsylvania Germans have a language of their own. It may sound odd to some who have had the notion that it is but a poor patois that these people employ. Well.Hardly.The"dialect" spoken antedates the high German of Martin Luther's day and arrangement. It was the latter who gave the'High' German language definite standing in literature and in commerce. Even before Luther the people of South Germany had a dialect which had then been in local use for many generations. It was in the country bordering on the Rhine from Switzerland and to Coblentz that the early emigrees originated landing eventually in America.
An Abridgement of the Laws of "Pennsylvania 1801 by Collinson Read
Here's a book"An Abridgement of the Laws of"Pennsylvania" by Collinson Read published in 1801. I bought this book when studying law because I wanted an early copy of the US Consitiution. This book starts with the US Consitiution(first contintal congress 1787) and then the Bill of Rights(second contintal congress 1791) Even though the Bill of Rights(or first ten amendments to the consitiution) were passed in 1791 this book is so early that it has 12 amendments listed. The first two amendments listed are not correct. The first listed is actually in the US consitiution Article1. Section 2. The second amendment listed never made it into the Bill of Rights. Starting with the Third amendment(which is actually#1 in the Bill of Rights) the next ten are correct. Then follows the third continental congress in 1798 with The first ... moreamendment being incorrect and the second(actually the first) which is correct. The book has 459 pages plus 14 pages of index at the end. Collinson Read was a Justice of the Peace from 1801 to 1816. His son James Read was a Captain in the Artillery. This is a great book for the student of US history but the bad news is its condition. Cover is detached and pages have foxing, a little musty, and are tan. The size is 5-1/4" x 8-1/2" I considered detaching and framing the pages. Imagine having a copy of the Bill Of Rights only ten years after it became law in the second continental congress. Thanks for looking!

This is somewhat of a diary of sorts ... morebecause he not only talks about who he did work for but also if he had to take time off; the reason for that time off. I’ve scanned a few examples for you to see what I mean. For instance, on October 14 th. 1854 he takes time off for“Mother Brittin’s funeral” There is time taken off for more funerals. Raising hay houses and barns, church functions, helping people move, anniversaries, time spent in the hospital which he says is on“Sixth and Master St. and much more. Lots of names mentioned too. Then part of the journal has to do with coal bought in the 1860’s. And another part shoe repair; at least I think its shoe repair because most of the entries say, Bottoming” and the account is also with a man by the name of“Sylvester Megargal. Some of the names they repaired shoes for are; John Blake. Robert Campbell, Peter Conklin, W. Colfish, Wm. Davis, Jacob Cottman, Allen Jones, George Wolf, W. E. Reese, Charles Osmon, W. Ryan, P. Arrison,P. Lawler, J. B. Holtman, Patrick Conroy, Eugene Cakill, Jesse Roberts, Jos. Byers, W. Slack and more. Finally most of the pages have to do with recipes and cures dating from the 1870’s and 1880’s. Many of them are for; Di
