An unusual and origjnal archive of manuscript notes taken by General William Crawford. Chairman of the Worcester County, Massachusetts, Board of County Commissioners, during hearings being held circa 1830-35 to approve or reject license applications to keep a tavern, inn for travelers or publick house within the County. Five applications, 18 pages of notes, size 7 1/2" x 12" folds, recently opened after being folded 175 years. 1801 COLLECTIONS OF THE MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY -Thomas Coffin Amory
Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society. For the Year M,DCCC” Printed by Samuel Hall in Boston in 1801. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The 7th volume of the Society's"Collections" series which provided the texts of historic documents from the 17th and 18th centuries. The MHS website notes- On 24 January 1791. The Rev. Jeremy Belknap invited nine like-minded Bostonians to join him in creating what they would call simply, The Historical Society, now the Massachusetts Historical Society, the oldest organization in the United States devoted to collecting materials for the study of American history. As he envisioned it, the society would become a repository and a publisher collecting, preserving, and disseminating resources for the study of American history. Through their pledges of family papers, ... morebooks, and artifacts from their personal collections, the founding members made the Society the nation's first historical repository by the end of their initial meeting. With the appearance of their first title at the start of 1792, they also made the MHS the nation's first institution of any description to publish in its field. In the absence of any other American historical repositories in the 1790s, the MHS took on a broadly national role, one still apparent in both its collections and its publications. As other historical institutions were founded elsewhere, including the New York Historical Society in 1804 and the American Antiquarian Society in 1812, the Society started to direct special attention to Boston, Massachusetts, and New England. The continuing legacy of its early years as the nation's only repository of American history, however, is a program of collections and activities of national and international importance. The Collections series, published since 1792, fulfills the Society's mission by making documents from the manuscript collection available to researchers beyond the walls of its library. These volumes adhere to the highest standards of do

1865 Annual Report, Massachusetts State Prison, Civil War Era Crime & Punishment
I am proud and pleased to offer up for auction a very rare and thoroughly fascinating Civil War era document: The Annual Report of the Board of Inspectors of the Massachusetts State Prison. Together with the Annual Reports of the Warden and Other Officers of the Institution, dated October 1, 1865. If you want to get a picture of what crime. Punishment, prison life, class and race relations were like in Massachusetts during the Civil War, this 55-page document offers a rare and thoroughly compelling glimpse through the keyhole. You won’t be able to put it down! In addition to well-written. Detailed, and extremely interesting reports from the prison’s Inspector, Warden, Chaplain and Physician, this report contains many charts, tables and lists dealing with such compelling subjects as: Specific types of crimes committed. Listed by number. States ... moreand countries of origin of the prisoners. Listed by number. Counties and towns of origin. Listed by number. Duration of sentences. Organized by length. Occupations of all prisoners before and during incarceration. Statistical comparison with other state penitentiaries. Prison population figures. Names and salaries of all prison personnel. Daily ration and meal menus for prisoners. Listed by day of the week. Racial breakdown of prison population. Cost to the state per prisoner. And many. Many more. I have read this report many times. And every time I do I find something new and fascinating in it. I wouldn’t think of parting with it except that I happen to have more than one original copy of this specific annual report. 1812 Report, Contested Elections in Massachusetts & Maine, 53pp., 200 Years Old!
I'm pleased to offer up for auction a very unusual. Rare, and above all, fascinating original document: The Report of Contested Elections in the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, printed in Boston by True& Rowe in the year 1812. That's right- this document is 200 years old! And it provides a fascinating glimpse of the workings of democracy in New England at the dawn of the Republic. This 53 page report appears to document all of the disputed elections in Massachusetts- and also Maine, which in 1812 was still a part of Massachusetts- going back to the early 1780's. The index, which you can see in one of the pictures, gives a good acoounting of the various types of contested elections discussed within, is itself fascinating reading. If you've ever wondered what public life America was like 200 ... moreyears ago- in between the Revolution and the Civil War, and at the outset of one of the greatest crises the young nation would ever face- this book will give you great insight into that question. I've never read anything like it. I don't know much about books of this era. And frankly, I can't even tell you what kind of paper it's printed on, although I can tell you that it doesn't look and feel like any paper or parchment I've ever seen before. Almost all of the pages are still uncut at the tops. The original"binding, one string, is intact and holding well. The pages are lightly mottled, but entirely legible, and candidly they are beautiful to behold; the typeface is gorgeous, and you can feel it as you run your fingers down the page. Some of the pages have little folds in the corners, but there are no tears to speak of, and nothing is missing or obscured. The book is about the size of a modern trade paperback. It would be an invaluable asset to any library, archive or researcher concerned with New England history, the early Republic, and the birth and youth of Democracy in America; it would also make a very fine addition to any serious bibliophile&

Original Feb 6 1788 MASSACHUSETTS CENTINEL, US Constitution Ratification History
This newspaper records an early chapter in US history. Today we view the Constitution as Gospel. But its beginning was a rocky road. After the Federal government came up with the Constitution in 1787, it was sent to the states for ratification. Furious debates about the power of state vs federal government arose. By January 1788 only 5 states had ratified the Constitution and all eyes looked to Boston, where the original Tea Party began, to see how Massachusetts would vote. Benjamin Russell, Editor of the Massachusetts Centinel, was still pleading the Constitution's case in the morning edition on Feb 6. The motto of his newspaper was"Uninfluenced by party, we aim to be just, see photos. He reported the State Congress' arguments in the paper. John Hancock was undecided to the end. Later that same day Massachusetts, the most important ... morestate to do so, ratified the constitution. The other states soon followed and it was finally adopted as the Law of the land. Here's the history as follows from the"Center For the Study of the American Constitution: On 26 December 1787 Benjamin Russell of the Massachusetts Centinel used the metaphor of raised pillars in“a great FEDERAL SUPERSTRUCTURE” to describe the ratification of the Constitution by three states. On 16 January 1788—a week after the Massachusetts Convention assembled—Russell revived and extended this metaphor by printing an illustration in his Centinel. Headed“THE FEDERAL PILLARS” and preceded by two lines of verse. This illustration had five erect pillars, depicting the five ratifying states, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut, respectively. The illustration also included a sixth pillar labeled“MASS. which was in the process of being raised. The Massachusetts Convention ratified the Constitution at 5:00 P.M. On 6 February, by which time the semiweekly Massachusetts Centinel’s issue of 6 February had been printed and distributed. This auction is for is that issue(Feb. 6) It is not the one with the"Pillars" illu

This book is from 1962. PRINTED AT CAMBRIDGE. MASSACHUSETTS, U.S.A. BY THE POWELL PRINTING COMPANY Some of the members of this club since 1762(according to this book) were SAMUEL ADAMS. JOHN HANCOCK, John Adams, William Bell, John& Benjamin Coolidge, John Proctor, Gorham Rogers, Jr. George Canterbury, John Thorndike. On the second page there is a fold out poster of sorts that is a copy of the original'constitution" of this group; one of the signers is"Sam Adams. When you open the front cover there is an attached envelope that holds the handwritten invitation for James H. Lowell to attend the September 17. 1962 meeting of the ... moreMassachusetts Charitable Society. THIS INVITATION is a piece of art and"ENGRAVED BY FREDERICA BAGSHAW" The list of original board members reads like who's-who in the HISTORY of America and Boston. It appears that only the well-connected or rich were in this exclusive men's club. I noticed one of the members in 1961 is Paul Revere(I'm guessing a descendant of same. There are photos of the members from the 150 th Anniversary in 1912 at a banquet at the Copely Plaza. Boston. There is a cellophane page covering the photo. Indexed list of members starting from the beginning year of 1762. There are photos of the members from the 200 th Anniversary in 1962 at a banquet at the Tavern Club. Boston. MASSACHUSETTS MANUSCRIPT LETTER WITH GOOD NAPOLEON AND WAR OF 1812 CONTENT
An interesting manuscript letter dated Amherst[Massachusetts] July 20, 1813, from Doctor T. J. Gridley to his friend Doctor Benjamin Heywood at nearby Worcester. The two had been classmates at Dartmouth College, and Gridley tries to bring Heywood up to date with news about friends and colleagues he has seen. He also reports on his practice at Amherst and some of the cases he has dealt with. Of particular and historic interest are his comments about the War in Europe, Napoleon[the Devil" in Germany and his hopes"they'l give him a drubbing yet" He is quite sarcastic and critical of the American Army along the northern border with Canada and their lack of success, such courage, such discipline, such generalship, such immortal achievement. Alas my Country! He also disdains President Madison for bringing"disgrace and infamy ... moreto the national character of the U.States" Not unusual feelings in New England where the War of 1812 was bitterly opposed.Gridley and Heywood both became prominent doctors and surgeons with long careers in Massachusetts. Content: Two handwritten letters from Frances Dunlap Lowell(d. 1885) The second wife of James Russell Lowell(1819-1891) who was a famous poet, critic, editor, and diplomat. Both letters are signed, Fanny Lowell, and are from Elmwood which was the estate of James Russell Lowell. There is no year on the ... moreeither letter but had to have been written sometime between 1870 and 1885 the year of Frances died. The letters have interesting content, including Mr. Lowell’s(James Russell Lowell) health including the sudden occurrence of violent pain which a Dr. Wyman is working on a cure and a future trip by, Mr. L, to Baltimore(Maryland) She also mentions lectures of a Mr. Wicks(Weild? Mother and Marcia, Mabel, a French Lecture, Portland(Maine) women’s rights, Miss Ballard, and household issues. One of the more interesting parts of the letters is where Lowell mentions a pearl necklace worth fifty-thousand dollars as an engagement gift to a neighbor’s girl who is engaged to a man worth six million dollars. There are several possibilities of whose marriage this was. One prime candidate is Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s daughter Edith Longfellow who married Richard Henry Dana III on January 10th 1878. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a neighbor of James Russell Lowell and the letter that mentions the necklace and engagement is dated Jan. 1st. However this is circumstantial evidence and there is no direct proof. Cambridge had numerous wealthy families who had

Boston is today the state capital and largest city in Massachusetts. It also serves as county seat of Suffolk County. Also the largest city in New England. Boston's city proper, covering 48 square miles, is home to an estimated population of 636,000, according to recent census data. The city is the anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area known as Greater Boston, home to 4.5 million people and the tenth-largest metropolitan area in the country. One of the oldest cities in the country, Boston was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by Puritan colonists from England. It was the scene of several key events of the American Revolution, such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston. Upon American independence fro
