1772 Original Poor Richard Almanack, Benjamin Franklin, Revolutionary War era
Poor Richard Improved: Being an Almanack and Ephemeris of the Motions of the Sun and Moon[etc. for the Year of Our Lord 1772 By Richard Saunders. Philom. Philadelphia. Pennsylvania: D. Hall. And W. Sellers. A very rare original almanac from the famous Poor Richard's series. Started by Benjamin Franklin and bearing his pseudonym, Richard Saunders. The last Poor Richard's in which Franklin had direct involvement was the issue for 1766, so this came after his time but still remains a very desireable piece of Americana. This almanac is complete at 18 leaves(36 pages) with original stitching. The final leaf(providing road data) is slightly abraded. Affecting a little text. A stain, about an inch wide on average, runs throughout the bottom portion of the almanac. This is heaviest near the center of the almanac(as visible in the scan of ... morethe September calendar pages) and lessening towards the front and back of the almanac(as seen in the scan showing the Man of Signs zodiacal/ astrological woodcut) Overall the pages are fairly clean and fresh, with some light scattered foxing, and strongly printed. The pages have been trimmed but retain substabtial margins, compromising no text. No significant tears in the page edges, with the final leaf very lightly tattered along the edge. Scans provided are at 150% to show better detail. The almanac measures 6 5/8 inches high by 3 3/4 inches wide. A tattered. Detached front cover of plain brown paper accompanies this almanac, with"Almanack for The Year 1772" faintly written on it. This cover would have likely been added by the original owner and only this fragment survives. It has kept the title leaf well protected, while the final leaf has suffered some abrasion, as mentioned. Overall a nicely preserved specimen. Powered by The free listing tool. 1798 NEW YORK SCHEME TO DEFRAUD REVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERANS OF THEIR BOUNTY LANDS
An original manuscript sworn legal deposition dated June 20. 1798 of Henry Van Rensellaer regarding detailed information about a scheme he was asked to participate in to defraud Revolutionary War veterans of their bounty lands in the unsettled region of Onondaga, New York. The plan involved a list of names provided by friends in the claims office of those veterans who had not yet claimed their bounty lands. It was then necessary to find willing participants to impersonate the named veteran and put in a claim for the deed. The deeds would later be transfered to the leaders of the scheme who would sell them for personal profit. Henry then lists the names and accomplices of those he knows are part of the scheme. An interesting legal document that needs further research. When the Revolutionary War ended, many states including New York were unable ... moreto pay the money owed to the soldiers for back pay. Instead, they were granted lands in the western territories as payment. Many did not wish to move, and sold their lands to others and to speculators. This scheme was obviously to defraud those who did not come forward, and would literally steal the lands from them.Four pages, 8" x 13 1/2" partially shown] folds, handmade rag paper, very good condition,Guaranteed original.$4.00 shipping. 1779 - REVOLUTIONARY WAR SERMON w HISTORY of the WAR FROM 1775 to 1778
HISTORICAL REMARKS. WITH MORAL REFLECTIONS: A SERMON PREACHED AT PROVIDENCE, JUNE 6, 1779. WHEREIN ARE PRESENTED, THE REMARKABLE DISPENSATIONS OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE TO THE PEOPLE OF THESE STATES, PARTICULARLY IN THE RISE AND PROGRESS OF THE PRESENT WAR, BETWEEN THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA, AND GREAT-BRITAIN. By David S. Rowland, A.M. Providence: Printed and sold by John Carter, at Shakespear's Head, near the State House, 1779. 35[1] pages, stitched: 5 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches. This original 234 year-old sermon printed by John Carter of Providence in 1779. Is probably one of the earliest historical compilations of the Revolutionary War in print! The book starts as a typical sermon with biblical references, however, within a few pages in it becomes a remarkable chronicle of the American Revolution from the battles at Concord and Lexington, ... morethrough to the arrival of the French Fleet off Newport in August of 1778. Rowland gives battle details including the number of men killed wounded and captured. This providential interpretation is given from the American perspective, however, it is an important documentation of the first few years of the American Revolution! The title page of this EXTREMELY RARE pamphlet has some foxing and a light stain and there is also a stain on the last two pages, however, the text is complete and in very good condition! As with all of my rare items I am starting this auction at $9.99 with NO RESERVE!

Memoirs of a Life, (Capt. Alexander Graydon), 1811 ~ Revolutionary War, 1st Ed
Memoirs of a Life. Chiefly Passed in Pennsylvania, Within the Last Sixty Years; With Occasional Remarks Upon the General Occurrences, Character and Spirit of That Eventful Period. Harrisburgh: Printed by John Wyeth. 1811. First Edition. Written by Capt. Alexander Graydon. The following military biography is accredited to Frederick Cookinham of the American Revolution Round Table and gives a flavor as to the author's life: Ft. Washington was to be Graydon's first and last battle. He was captured and paroled and returned to the army at Morristown. Lack of numbers alone explains the defeat. If this judgment reflects badly on the decisions of the Commander in Chief, he says, I cannot help it. A good man he undoubtedly was, but my respect for Washington must bow to my respect for the truth, and the truth is ``his record of military decisions is not without blemish. He also blames Col. Magaw. the fort's commandant, for bad judgment in defending northern Manhattan. Anther very 18th Century story is how Graydon got paroled by Gen. Howe: his mother came from Philadelphia. Got a pass from Washington through the lines, and pleaded with Howe in person. After the war. Graydon settled down to business in Philadelphia. His memoirs end with a line that sums up the revolution and the dawning era of westward expansion. Remember that the freedom to settle the west, deni
