An original handwritten letter. Obviously done in haste, dated Richmond, Virginia, July 8, 1862 from an unknown correspondent to"Father" The letter is written in pencil on typical blue Confederate quality paper, probably by a woman, and is not easy to read. It describes a visit to the bedside of"Brother Billy" who is obviously dying but is"still with us" The doctors come every day to visit, but his condition seems desperate and"you would not know him" The writer promises to keep Father advised but bluntly warns to"prepare your self for the worst" I have a strong suspicion that Billy was a wounded soldier who could have been brought to a hospital in Richmond at this period during the war.This letter came with a group of business letters from the Cowles family of North Carolina, all dated after ... morethe Civil War. Archive 650 Letters 1887 Richmond Virginia Tobacco C.F. Russell Lee Camp Cigarettes This is a remarkable and original letter copybook representing 650 letters over 750 pages all from C.F. Russell. A tobacco manufacturer from Richmond, Virginia. They are all from 1887 and most deal with his Lee Camp Tobacco. He produced this in accord with Lee Camp Confederate Veterans and one of his major salesman was Captain A.A. Spitzer from Staunton and a member of the Lee Camp. There are many letters to Spitzer and about Spitzer. Many of the letters talk about a desire to build a home for the Lee Camp and all seem to be related to the tobacco business. It is a really interesting collection and is in good condition. Here is a small sample of what the letters say: To D.L. Sammis and Co Albuquerque. NM Gentlemen referring to your favor of Oct 28, 1886, I ... morewould ask that you give my goods a trial in your state. Having had quite a large experience in the manufacture of goods for your section of the country. I make a brand especially for your trade. If you will agree to push the goods to our mutual advantage I will give the agency for them to you… In regard to selling the retail trade in Charleston I will say that while I dislike to commend it I will agree for you to sell to reliable retail dealers on the condition that all bills for less than $25 are subject to sight draft… Please let me know whether you ever received the jewelry safe sent you with the cigarettes for Hauptmann and Co. It cost me at wholesale prices nearly $4 if you cannot use it to any advantage with the Prairie Flowers tobacco. I would like for you to dispose of it…I can’t understand why it is that Hauptmann and Co cannot push Old Burley cigarettes as I am sure they are the best on the market for the price… I received a letter from Rice and Co in regard to the Lee Camp tobacco but they desire the goods on consignment… You say the O.D.
