It appeared as a two page spread in the April 9, 1945 issue of Life Magazine. This was an ad for Swift& Company which was one of the major meat packers in the US, famous for Butterball turkeys among other products. The artist was Hadden Lundbolm and the expression, Grace Before Meat" comes from the title of an 1821 essay by Charles Lamb. London) Size: 8" x 9.5" x 1.5" Pages: 1152 Clothbound; no dust jacket; cover is deep red with black and gold embossed lettering. Overall Condition: GOOD. TENDING TO FAIR I'm not an expert in antique books. So here is a layman's description of the book's condition: All text pages and illustration pages/plates are in good shape. If a tad yellowed with age, but not brittle. End-pages are somewhat brittle. A few text pages in the back are loose, but from what I can tell, none are missing. Front-inside ... morecover joint is cracked; rear-inside cover joint is detached. Front and rear outside covers are well preserved, though significantly rubbed. Spine is mostly present, but with a few cracks and tears that need some TLC/restoration. See photos for detail. NOTE: It is normal for all antiquarian books to have had several owners. And to have hand-written names and markings, as well as age discoloration and wear. These features are likely present unless explicitly stated otherwise, and they are not considered grounds for a return. Also, digital photographs/images cannot represent the item with 100% true-to-life accuracy, especially as to details of shape, color, and texture. Condition Guide Fine(F) No defects. Little usage. Older books may show minor flaws. Very Good(VG) Shows some signs of wear. Maybe be rubbed, little to no foxing. Most leafs should be clean and near-mint. Good(G) An average used book with all pages present. May have loose bindings. Highlighting, cocked spine, or torn dust jacket. Fair(FR) Well-worn and handled. No text pages missing. but endpapers or title page may be missing. Markings. But none interfere with readability. Poor(P) All text is legible but may be soiled

All pages are clean and accounted for. Some wear but good to very good condition for age. This magazine includes the very collectible and scarce cover by Neysa McMein of famous movie star actress Alice Joyce who she selected as one of the twelve loveliest women in America. From the early 1900s through 1937. Neysa McMein(January 24, 1888– May 12, 1949) created most, if not all, of McCall's covers. McMein was an American artist and illustrator who became a regular member of the Algonquin Round Table set. In Alan Rudolph's 1994 Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, McMein is played by actor-director Rebecca Miller. McMein hosted nightly salons ... morein her New York studio located across from Carnegie Hall. George Gershwin. Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Walt Disney, Edna Ferber, Charlie Chaplin, Helen Hayes, George Abbott, Harpo Marx and Dorothy Parker were among her friends, and Anais Nin posed for one of her covers. In 1986, The Society of Illustrators posthumously inducted McMein into its Hall of Fame. January 4.1883 Life pamphlet/magazine. This is in excellent condition. It maybe origi nal or it maybe the reprint from 1960 Life advertising promotion. It was acquired at an estate sale in a group of items from the early 1900's and late 1800's so highly possible that it is a n original. This family got rid of nothing and ever ything was well maintained. In any event(53 or 130 years old) it is in fabulous condition. The yellowing if a reprint was probably created to give"original" effect. Very nice piece of history in either scenario. See photos. Like all my items this is being sold as is. The front color piece is by listed artist Grant E. Hamilton. The middle lithograph and back color piece are by listed artist Victor Gillam. Coming apart at seem at bottom. The color is vibrant and the font beautiful. It is framed in a lovely hand carved wooden frame with such detail. The board in the back of the frame has been replace and had to be taped on due to lack of prongs to hold it. The tape cannot be seen at all from the front. There is a wire for hanging.
