This hefty 381-page, 8.5"x11" oversized volume contains tombstone inscriptions for virtually every cemetery in Greene County. Tennessee. Because these records were compiled at the beginning of the 20th Century. Tombstones mounted after the 1930s are not included in this volume. Although each tombstone differs. She hath done what she could, etc. Occupation* When Available* WPA Workers During the Great Depression in the early 1900s. Many Americans were given a"job" by the United States Government to support their family. One such"job" was transcribing early court, family, Bible, and cemetery records as well as other local records. Original versions were typed on onion skin paper with"x" number of carbon copies. Although the State Archives owns the vast majority of'first' or typed copy, carbons have circulated for years but are now scattered. Often the typing is not the best and is difficult to read but these valuable records still constitute one of the best sources of information for Tennessee Counties. In many cases, these are all that remain of the original as many county records have been lost. WPA records are generally full text transcription: much larger in scope than an abstraction or summary. 5 Handwritten Diary Moulton Cotton Family Randolph VT Washington DC Mrs Lincoln
I want to start off by saying that on a weekly basis I get questions from bidders asking if I split up family lots of diaries and sell them separately. So I thought I’d post something to ease everyone’s mind before they buy. I am very passionate about diary collecting and history and I can’t even imagine buying a diary lot from one particular family(such as this one from the Moulton family) and then splitting them up and selling each separately. Its heart wrenching when I see this happening and you have my promise that if I have more then one diary. No matter how many I have, I will always sell family lots together in one auction. But I think it’s a good question you should always ask your sellers just in case you want to try and keep a lot together. And with that said… There are some diaries that could actually change and/or add to the course ... moreof history and I feel these diaries possess that kind of information. This is a very historical group of diaries that belonged to the Moulton family originally from Randolph and Brookfield Vermont. There are 5 handwritten diaries written by different members of the family and they date between 1855-1872. Also included in this diary lot is a handwritten manuscript that I found between the pages of one of the diaries. This manuscript has a handwritten genealogy representing the Moulton/Cotton families. The head of this family was Phineas Moulton and he was married to Maria Cotton. Phineas was the son of Phineas Moulton Sr. and Maria’s father was Bybe Lake Cotton and both were soldiers in the Connecticut Line during the Revolutionary War. Phineas Sr. was a pioneer of the town of Randolph Vermont. Arriving in 1788 from Monson Massachusetts and settling in 1793 about one mile east from the village on what is known as the“Green Mountain Stock Farm” which has since remained in the possession of the family. Phineas Jr. became influential in public affairs, serving in both houses of the state legislature. There is also a cemetery named after the family called Moulton Cemetery a

1864 WASHINGTON DC LETTER: OPINIONS ON ABRAHAM LINCOLN SUCCESSFUL REELELCTION
Very interesting 3-1/2 pp. letter dated Washington DC Nov 14 1864. From William H. Barton, probably a Government bureaucrat, to"Friend Billings, Oskosh, Wisconsin, with the writer's opinions on the success of the reelection of President Abraham Lincoln to a second term just the week before. The letter reads. In part: Carll Brady has yet a place among the additions made to Washington since the inauguration of this unholy war for the Establishment. On a more firm basis, of the'local institution. The conduct of the loyal people rendered on the 8th day of the present month[being Election Day] will put at rest forever many of the perplexing questions arising with our troubles. Among others, the War is to be prosecuted to a successful termination by the sword. Be the same for our Waterloo. In so doing all other minor questions must ... morebend to its purpose. Among them will be found the destruction of. slavery in this country& with it, its consequent American aristocracy. The latter. In other countries, has made the asylum for many, yet the most surprising thing to me has always been why the foreigner casts the vote for everything that drove him from his native land. There an be no reason. But that of ignorance on the part of some& intrigues on the part of others. The foreigner is taught from childhood that Democracy is opposed to aristocracy& when he came to this country, he supposes it the same& you can't convince him otherwise. The people in this campaign have been aroused& the intelligence of the country has spoken& with it disappears in the present form. At least the party calling themselves Democrats. There has been some changes in the office, but none to speak of. The clerks have nearly all been home during election on from ten to 15 days furlough. Wm H. Barton. Good condition. Some very light wear at top edge, mentioned only for the record. We have been in the paper Americana business since 1953 and are members of both the Manuscript and Ephemera Societies as well as numerous

1865 Sermon Preached the Day After ABRAHAM LINCOLN Died! Assassination ORIGINAL!
This is an absolutely original. Ultra-rare FIRST EDITION copy of the famous sermon preached by the Reverend John Langdon Dudley the Sunday morning after President Abraham Lincoln died. It is entitled DISCOURSE PREACHED IN THE SOUTH CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, Middletown, CT. on the Sabbath morning after the Assassination of President Lincoln. By John L. Dudley, Pastor of the Church. Middletown: D. Barnes. 1865. It is also known as SLAVERY'S LAST WORD. This original 1st edition copy contains the text of the sermon preached extemporaneously by Reverend Dudley, and was taken from his notes and reproduced by a group of prominent gentlemen who were moved by its solemn grandeur and approached the Reverend about publishing his remarks. Though the text of the sermon itself was reprinted in several newspapers, the true first edition consisted of a ... morevery small edition, and is extremely rare and highly sought after by advanced Lincoln collectors and institutions. In fact, I have been able to definitely place only one other copy besides this one and the one in the Library of Congress. I'm sure other copies must have survived, but I do not know how many, nor where they are located. This copy turned up in the Mississippi estate of a relative of the Schriver family, formerly of Gettysburg, PA. There has been a noted book published called THE SCHRIVERS OF GETTYSBURG: The True Story of One Family's Experiences During the Battle of Gettysburg, making this a very nice association copy. 28 pages, fair-good condition overall, with standard light foxing, minor nicks and small tears, missing the original wraps. It was folded lengthways at one point, probably during its original distribution. PAYPAL only, $3.99 for worry-free continental U.S. shipping, packaged between two layers of Foamcore board. April 1865 Civil War Letter Abraham Lincoln Assassination Lee Surrender Battle Siege of Petersburg Battle Slaves Free This is one of the best end of war letters we have ever had. It was written by Will A White. 3 rd Brigade. 1 st Division. 6 th Army Corps on April 17 th. 1865 and talks in deep detail about the Battle of Petersburg, Lee’s Surrender, the reception by the former slaves and the murder of President Abraham Lincoln. There is even talk about the Confederates arming their slaves and the slaves saying that they were going to turn and fire on the rebels. It is 8 pages long and is handwritten and in very good condition. It says in part: Oh What glorious times we have had and at present our army is fairly crazy with joy Richmond that proud stronghold of Southern Chivalry at last in our possession. I told you in previous letter that the war was then virtually settled…the greybacks(rebs) have no organization that they can call a disciplined army. We have had a hard campaign of it while it lasted and the division to which I belong had the honor of fighting the last battle with Lees army before they surrendered and in this fight my regiment lost heavily. 9 officers and 196 enlisted men my company lost 5 killed and 15 wounded out of 40 which was just one half that went into the fight and some of the wounded will never recover. Our Corps has the Honor of being the first troops to break the lines of Lee’s army in front of Petersburg and right nobly they done it too in the first days of fight we captured 36 pieces of artillery and 24 battle flags and the city of Petersburg first placed its surrender into Lieut Col Neiler hands of our regiment although the 9 Corps were the first troops to enter the city… Our Corps was commanded by Major General Wright since the fight he has been promoted to Brigadier General in the Regular Service our Division was commanded by General Frank Wheaton our Brigade by Col Edwards Dreven Brigadier. 1847 GENERAL GEORGE GIBSON Manuscript SIGNED Letter LINCOLN Attended His Funeral
HANDWRITTEN LETTER. SIGNED, from GENERAL GEORGE C. GIBSON dated Washington, Oct 22, 1847, re: Payment for Provisions used in 1847(would be the MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR) Single-fold sheet of watermarked stationery(makes 4 pages) Handwriting on the front page only. Paper has some sort of official looking oval blind-stamp at the upper left corner. But I can’t make out any of its writing or design. Condition: the letter has two horizontal folds. Where it was probably folded to fit into an envelope; there are some creases from handling, overall remains sturdy with manuscript writing that is bright and clear. About GENERAL GEORGE C. GIBSON(from a Congressional Cemetery website) Maj. Gen. George C. Gibson(b. 1 Sep 1775- d. 30 Sep 1861) Major General George C. Gibson was the 11th Quartermaster General of the U.S. Army serving from 1816-1818. He was an ... moreinfantry officer in the War of 1812 and served under Andrew Jackson in the Seminole Indian campaign. After the office of Quartermaster General was reorganized he was appointed Commissary General of Subsistence which post he held until his death at age 86. THE FUNERAL OF GENERAL GIBSON- as reported I The Evening Star. October 2, 1861: The noticeable features of a military funeral drew many spectators additional to the large number of sorrowing friends gathered this morning to witness the funeral ceremonies of the late Major General George C. Gibson. The corpse had been placed in a handsome silver mounted coffin covered with blue cloth. Decorated with tasteful wreaths of white flowers, roses and camellias, and draped in the wide folds of the American flag. It occupied the center of the modestly furnished office room upstairs, used by the General in life. AMONGST THOSE PRESENT AT THE FUNERAL WERE PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN. Secretaries Seward and Smith, GENERAL SCOTT, GENERAL MCCLELLAN, and many other personages of civic and military note. The escort was formed in front of the late residence of the deceased. 217 F street at 11 o'clock this morning, and from thence t
1795, Rev. Henry Lincoln, Falmouth, Massachsuetts, letter signed, Nantucket
This is a wonderful original letter dated 1795. Falmouth, Massachusetts, where Henry Lincoln has written and signed correspondence to Reverend Jonathan Moore at Nantucket regarding the need to chose a new minister and that the Reverend Moore has been unduly attacked by the rage of blind party zealots.it would appear that Reverend Moore has been removed from the Nantucket church by a party of angry people.Lincoln finding this out has written a letter of hope.signed Henry Lincoln. Letter is 8x10, two pages, addressed outer leaf, in overall fine shape. The Reverend Henry Lincoln was born Nov. 3. 1765; grad. Harvard College in 1786; ordained Feb. 3, 1790. He was son of William and Mary(Otis) Lincoln of Hingham. Mr. Lincoln died at Nantucket, at the residence of his son-in-law, Dr. Elisha P. Fearing, May 28, 1857; and was at the time of his decease ... morethe eldest clergyman in Massachusetts with one exception, viz. Rev. Jacob Norton of Billerica. He was a popular preacher in his active days, a gentleman of the old school, of fine person, remarkably neat in his attire, affable, social, a sincere Christian. He was descended from Samuel Lincoln the weaver. Who is the president's ancestor: Samuel-1, Samuel-2, Jedediah-3, William-4, Henry-5. Therefore, Henry was a 3rd cousin twice removed from President Abraham Lincoln. Rev. Jonathan Moore. Ordained in 1768. He was a graduate of Harvard, and had been librarian of that college. Previous to his ordination also, he supplied for some months the pulpit of Brattle Street Church, Boston, during the illness of Dr. Cooper, who attended his ordination at Rochester. His pastorate included the trying Revolutionary period, and on the alarm of Lexington he joined one of the Rochester Companies as its chaplain. It is said also that"he shouldered his musket and marched to Marshfield and also to Wareham during the Revolution. Rev. Jonathan Moore. The fourth pastor, was ordained over the" First Church" of Rochester(now Mattapoisett) Sept. 7, 1768, and in the nearly thirty year

1865 UNION CIVIL WAR LTR 96th ILLINOIS INF REGT-MENTIONS LINCOLN ASSASSINATION
Very interesting 4-1/2 pp. Union Civil War soldier's letter mentioning assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Written on printed stationery of Head Quarters, Fourth Army Corps, Assistant Adjutant General's Office, dated Greenville, East Tennessee, Apr16 1865, from Private Henry H. Gage, Company"G, 96th Illinois Infantry Regiment, to his younger brother John Porcius Gage, Vineland, Cumberland County, New Jersey, with original postmarked postal cover. Lincoln died the previous day, Apr 15 1865. The content reads. In part: Our Country. My small citizen, met with a loss which will long be regretted, but which will not affect the main questions of Nationality, I hope, and though the death of the President cannot be mourned too much, the Country will not go to the Devil. as brave men are left yet to follow[Union Generals] Sherman, ... moreGrant and Sheridan, and as long as these men have Armies, the Devil must steer clear. Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston is yet loose, and even after he is cleaned out, the war won't be totally over, tho' no more hard fighting may be expected. So child, we may yet have many reverses, but the end is near at hand. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad. Not that you care particularly one way or the other, but you remember that you have a Vet. Brother in limbs and the sooner the war is over, the sooner he is free. If he does get out, he will yet have a couple of years to celebrate, so my boy be joyful. Did you celebrate day before yesterday? We have had several celebrations lately in honor of the fall of Richmond surrender of[Confederate General Robert E. Lee and raising of the flag on[Fort] Sumpter] John, do you enjoy the little feats of juggling that the female witches perform? I like any such show. A person likes humbuggery naturally, but so much of it seems to me would play out. Do much of a good thing would not suit me, tho' I feel now as though I could stand almost anything. There's OId Day Spirits I might like a few of, but too many of them would be equally

A former member of the Providence literary circle when he attended Brown University in the late 1850s. He may have been the real author of Lincoln's famous"Letter to Mrs. Bixby. After Lincoln's death, Hay later served as editor of the*New York Tribune* and as U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom under President William McKinley. American author JOHN GEORGE NICOLAY(1832-1901) was born in Germany and emigrated to the U.S. as a child. Before serving as Lincoln's private secretary. He worked as a newspaper editor

1938 Handwritten Diary 20yr old girl Lincoln Nebraska Great Depression Theatre
This is such a perfect example of how the great depression affected a 20 year old girl living in Lincoln Nebraska during the year 1938. I don’t know her name and she didn’t write the exact town she lives in but she mentions going to Johnson. Omaha and Tecumseh on numerous occasions. Then she also talked about going to Hayward Park and sure enough there is a Hayward Park in Lincoln Nebraska. The family was in such dire straits financially that they almost loose their place of residence and get their utilities shut off on numerous occasions. In fact our young author. Who works for the telephone Company, ends up paying for some of the bills to get the utilities turned back on. She lives paycheck by paycheck only having 18 cents in her pocket at times. One thing that the depression didn’t affect was her love for the movies. In fact she goes to ... morethe movies it seems at least once or twice a week(and more) and the reason I mention this is because she also loves critiquing them and has her own 5 star rating system. Such a great diary that’s almost completely full of handwritten entries. There is one for every day of the year except January 1 st through the 12 th when she begins her entries. And such great historical significant entries too as you will see in the following excerpts… 1938“January 12 th, Went to show with Amy. They Won’t Forget, a very dramatic picture. Claude Rains, Edward Norris and some new actors. ½(I don’t have stars on my computer so am using the asterisk sign but she draws stars) Very convincing. Almost too much so. I hope Marian sees it. January 20 th, Gosh wish I could get another job. I’ll never be a good operator. I don’t want Lillian to feel that I should keep the job just because we used to be neighbors. February 2 nd, Saw“Wells Fargo” with Joel McCrea. Frances Dee, Bob Burns. A very good picture. I certainly enjoyed it. It was long but always interesting. It had everything, drama, thrills, laughs, tears, villains and a couple wars for good measures. The cartoon was cu

Antique Hardcover Novel - The Rise of Roscoe Paine - 1912 - Joseph C. Lincoln
A novel published in 1912"The Rise of Roscoe Paine" was written by Joseph C. Lincoln who was a prolific writer in his day. The book is in"Good" condition. The hardcover is solid showing its age through wear but is solid. It is showing some separation from the binding when you open the front cover at the very top and when you open the back cover. I have shown the separation in the back in the 4th photo. The binding itself is still good for its age as are the pages which I have photographed as well. The book is still very readable as well as collectible. I ship with tracking within 24 hours upon receiving notice from ebay of receipt of your payment. Thank you for looking.

1945 Handwritten Diary Young Teacher Husband Air Force Divorce Lincoln Park MI
Up for auction today is a handwritten WWII era diary representing the year 1945. It was written by 23 year old Marian Eaton of Jackson or Wayne County Michigan. I know at least that she lives in Michigan as she mentions the towns of Parma. Sandstone, Detroit. Jackson. Lincoln Park and Lyon Lake. She is a young married school teacher whose husband(Wyley) is in the service(Air force) and has been gone over a year. Wyley and Marian have only been married for 2 years. In the beginning of the diary she talks about getting wonderful letters from him and missing him terribly but then in September he writes her a letter after 22 days of no writing and tells her he wants to marry someone else. She refuses and pretty soon he seems to come back around to her and their marriage seems saved. However when I went to look the couple up on the web I saw that ... morethey had divorced in 1969. I also found out that Wyley was a researcher and chemist. I think I might have found his service record too. And I quote… Col(USAF. Ret) WYLEY E. EATON(1922- 2014) Wyley E. Eaton was born 22 Dec 1922 in Davis. MI. He graduated with USAAF class 44-C at Marfa Army Airfield, TX; and served during WWII in the European Theater. He continued his service in the Korean Conflict, and at Selfridge AFB, MI. His career included pilot duties in the UC-78, B-29, B-50, and the C-45/46/47 aircraft. He separated from the Air Force in 1946, but soon returned as a qualified MD, a role he served until retiring in 1982. Colonel Eaton leaves behind his wife, Beverly, and two daughters” So it looks like he remarried. The diary really gives the ready a good look at life for a young military wife during WWII. In fact at one point he even sends her some silk material from an old parachute which she makes a blouse out of. As far as her teaching goes. She’s a 4 th grade teacher and has some pretty unruly kids. Has lots of trouble with them kissing each other. The other thing I noticed is that she seems to be very tired all the time and more than the usual fatigue

1937 Travel Diary Lincoln NE to New Orleans Texas Mexico Colorado Photo Ephemera
This is a wonderful 1937 travel diary and scrapbook put together by a woman living in Nebraska(near Lincoln I believe) who takes a trip with three others and heads to New Orleans. Texas. Mexico. Colorado and back home. The diary consists of 126 pages with typed entries and tons of scrap including original photos. Postcards, brochures, maps and more. In fact on the very first page you can see a map showing the route traveled as she’s marked it. All of the pages were housed in a three ring binder but since they were numbered I decided to take them out as the rings on the binder were rusting and the pages were difficult to turn. I will include the binder with this auction. This journal would really be quiet beautiful with an archival binding. She doesn’t write her name but she does write this entry…Sunday May 9 th. And the 13 th Wedding anniversary ... moreof the Scrantons. Does that mean her last name is Scranton? Not quite sure but worth mentioning. Her detailed descriptions of the trip is fascinating. They spend a great deal of time in New Orleans and Mexico. Both of which she loves. She’s a fabulous writer as you will see in the following excerpts… 1937“Saturday May 8 th, Southward bound. New Orleans. Galveston. Old Mexico. The historic Southwest, where ever our fancy may lead us. Fifteen days of vacation and no forwarding address! Nothing can stop us now. What does it matter if there are a few light rain showers. They only freshen and brighten the beautiful green countryside. They take Route 71 to Kansas City and stay the night there. On to Bentonville Arkansas and Fayetteville Arkansas. An hour later and then Northern Louisiana and farming country. Cotton fields. Lots of Negroes, children and dogs. Women and children chop cotton; men cultivate with a single mule and all work slowly. Ida, the first town in La. Big cotton fields interspersed with Negro shanties, similar to shanties in Ark. Sharecroppers; stovepipes sticking out of windows, wooden window doors open in the daytime, no screens, and t
