Happy Birthday/ Pierre/ with love/ Joan” The note-paper is 4.25” x 5.25” It is light green and printed at the top in yellow and black. It is Inscribed and Signed by Crawford in blue ink. It is quite lovely. The note-paper was attached to the front free-endpaper by a couple of 3/4” x 3/4” stamp collector type hinge mounts. The mounts are no longer present. But they have left their stain on the front free-endpaper and a matching stain to the blank backside of the Signed Note-Paper. The mounts did no damage, other than leaving their age mark. The signed stationery/ note-paper is now laid-in loosely. Also laid-in ... morethe book is an unrelated note-card from the Consulate General of Switzerland to“Pierre” Dated 7.3.74. It is hand-written in German. I believe it has nothing to do with the Crawford book, but just happens to be laid-in this book. The book came from the estate of PIERRE RHEIN and PATRICIA MITAU. Who had three children all of whom took their father’s last name. Pierre Rhein was born in Switzerland. Patricia Mitau was born in San Francisco. Her mother was Marjorie Fleishhacker whose father was Herbert Fleishhacker, the famous Banker, Financier, Early California Baseball Team Owner, Bon Vivant, and Philanthropist. The Fleishhacker family is a very well-known San Francisco family. Any connection Pierre Rhein had with Joan Crawford might have come from the acquaintances of the family of his partner, Patricia Mitau, but I don’t really know. It is an acount of the life of Ben Lindsey and also signed by him inside the front cover. It is autobiographical in nature but was written by Harvey J O'Higgins. The book was published in 1011 and is in good shape, binding still intact. It measures 5" by 8" Benjamin Barr Lindsey(November 25. 1869- March 26, 1943) was an American judge and social reformer based in Denver, Colorado during the Progressive Era. Lindsey was a pioneer in the establishment of the juvenile court system. Through his efforts. An act was passed creating a juvenile court in Denver which represented an important advance in relation of the law to children. Lindsey was made judge of the juvenile court in ... more1901. He held the position continuously, but he was not endorsed by either political party in 1908. Under his administration, the juvenile court of Denver became famous throughout the civilized world. Among other measures to which Judge Lindsey contributed his influence were a reform of the registration law. Greatly reducing election frauds; a reform of the ballot; state provisions for the support of the dependents of people serving in prison; extension of the probation system for prisoners; organization of public baths and playgrounds in Denver; the institution of the fresh-air movement in Denver and enactment of state-wide Mother's Pension Law. He was a leader in the movement to abolish child labor. He carried on an active propaganda for the general adoption of the juvenile court plan. And for political and social reform, through lectures delivered in many American and foreign cities and through the publication of books and pamphlets, of which The Beast(with Harvey J. Gray cloth covered boards with stamped gilt lettering to the spine and front cover, and a decorative gilt design on the front cover, 5” x 7.5” 473 pages plus 5 prelim pages. GOOD MINUS condition. The covers are worn at the spine ends and corner tips, sunned at the spine, and show some rubbing and corner bumps; the front and rear inner hinges are split but holding; there are several pea-size tears to the top edge of the first few pages, not affecting text; the last page has a crease and chipping to its front edge, not affecting text; the book has been over-opened at a few places, the pages are lightly toned and there is some foxing here and there throughout.
