140 Handwritten Love Letters Mills Stebbins Baltimore MD Tunkhannock PA 1870-94
I want to start off by saying that on a weekly basis I get questions from bidders asking if I split up family lots of diaries and sell them separately. So I thought I’d post something to ease everyone’s mind before they buy. I am very passionate about diary collecting and history and I can’t even imagine buying a diary lot from one particular family and then splitting them up and selling each separately. Its heart wrenching when I see this happening and you have my promise that if I have more then one diary. No matter how many I have, I will always sell family lots together in one auction. But I think it’s a good question you should always ask your sellers just in case you want to try and keep a lot together. And with that said… Then I need to put that it is illegal by EBay’s rules to copy all or any part of the description here for purposes ... moreof selling elsewhere. Their policy is listed here; I have no problem at all with anyone purchasing my item and reselling it. However my description that I’ve worked hours on is not allowed to be copied by anyone for the above purposes. The main reason I write this is because I was contacted about a listing where someone had copied my exact auction and tried to sell a diary that they didn’t even have. It ended up being a fraudulent auction and I’m thankful they caught it in time. Thank you so much for your understanding. I bought this lot back in 1999 and it was from a private dealer and this is the first time they’ve been on sale since then; never on eBay. I kept her brief description of each letter and scanned those descriptions here to give you a better idea of the contents. However her description really doesn’t even come close to the great amount of historical contents that these letters hold. I have not had time to read these letters thoroughly and since I’ve had them for over 10 years. I need to get them to someone who will get more use out of them then I have. There are about 150 letters and most of them have their covers. They date from about the 1870’s into the 18

10 Handwritten Letters Chittenden Wickes Yale Alumni 1874 European Travel 105pgs
I had such an incredible time reading this group of letters. His writing is none other then amazing. There are a total of 10 letters and between them there are 105 handwritten pages. Our author is Horace H. Chittenden. Yale alumni among other great things. He had taken a trip to Europe in 1874 with his family and a few other young men from Yale and is writing to his good friend. Another Yale alumni, Tomas P. Wickes. Before I quote from the letters I want to give you a bit of background on these two men. First Horace. The author of these letters. Horace Hatch Chittenden was born January 24 th. 1855, in Burlington. Vt. His father was secretary of the Peace Conference of 1861. Registrar of the United States Treasure during the Civil War and an author of note. Beecher Autograph Note SIGNED. 1p. 5 x 8" ANS of Mr. Thomas Beecher regarding a handful of letters he burned of his sister. Refereed to as Mrs. Stowe. Addressed from Elmyra. N.Y. July 1806. Thomas Kinnicut Beecher(1824-1900) From a young age. Thomas Beecher had shown a disinterest in the ministry and an aptitude for natural sciences and education. He graduated from Illinois College. And helped his older brother Henry in his church in Indiana for a short time. Like ... moreCatharine Beecher he turned to education as a career. He taught in Philadelphia, and spent two years at Hartford Public High School. In 1850 he married Hartford native Olivia Day, who died in childbirth in 1853. By then Thomas had followed the pattern of his older brothers and accepted a position at New England Church in Williamsburg, NY. Thomas also differed from most of his Beecher siblings in being more politically and socially conservative. He opposed abolition as too radical up until the beginning of the Civil War. And disagreed with the woman's rights movement his sister Isabella and brother Henry supported. These views led to his dismissal. And he accepted a call from the Independent Congregational Church in Elmira, NY in 1853. Among his parishioners were the Langdon family, whose daughter Olivia would marry Samuel Clemens(Mark Twain) Thomas officiated at their wedding. Thomas himself remarried in 1857. His second wife, Julia Jones, was his first wife's cousin. Julia and Thomas adopted three daughters. Despite Thomas' anti-abolition stance there is evidence he participated in the Underground Railroad, and he joined the Union army, serving as a chaplain in th

150pc Handwritten Letters Diary Archive Beal Potter Bath Bowdoinham ME 1896-1951
This group is just too large for me to read and study right now so I’m selling it un-researched. All of the items belonged to the Beal and Potter family of Maine. Most are written to Rachel Beal Potter who was the daughter of Reverend Zacheus M. Beal. There are 120 letters. 2 handwritten journals and about 20-30 other pieces of ephemera. All of them date between 1896-1951. Most of the letters date from the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. A few are from her father too. Some of the writers of the letters are: H. H. Lefferts(who has a business or ministry called“Signs of the Times) R. Lester Dodson, Martin D. Fisher, D. M. Vail, Minnie Waddell, J. I. Foster of Rising Star Texas, Arnold H. Bellows, Marion S. Brooks of Chico California, Elder O. J. Crocker of Hiram Georgia and more. Dodson and Lefferts ended being authors writing several books about“Signs ... moreof the Times” and other religious pieces. Most of the letters are long several page letters too and most have their original envelopes. As far as the two journals; both seem to have to do with genealogy. One is a 50 page journal and the title page reads“ Bath Maine. Dec. 2. 1895. Letters, preaching and thoughts of Father’s. Eld. Zacheus M. Beal. And then in the back of that journal is another section with the title. Sketches of Sister Attie’s letter to Father. The 2 nd journal has 62 pages and all those pages have to do with birth. Marriage and death dates. When they moved to each house, dates of special events, etc. Some great family history. Then as far as the ephemera goes there are a few“Times of the Signs” newsletters or newspapers. Then there are 18 handwritten(several pages) of manuscripts that are titled. Maine Old School Baptist Circular Letters. Bowdoinham Maine. I actually found this church on the web and scanned a photo of it. These manuscripts date from the early 1900’s and then skip to the 1940’s. Really a wonderful family group that deserves further research.

47 Handwritten Letters Lewander Chicago ILL Gangsters Bootlegging Love 1929-31
Well. That old saying that you can’t judge a book by its cover it so true however on this lot it should say, you can’t judge a letter by its cover. These letters are worn, the covers dirty, and when I just browsed through them I thought they were rather simple short letters, but I was pleasantly surprised at what I found with the contents. All most all of the letters(47 in all) are addressed to Edward Lewander of Buffalo New York and they were written around 1929 to 1931. I found Edward on one of the“Border Crossings” forms on Ancestry. It says he’s polish. 16 years old and arrived from Canada on September 25 th. 1928. Edward seemed to have a very interesting life. At least that’s the way it seemed looking through the eyes of his friends. He sure likes the girls that’s for sure. Most of the letters are from different girls in his life. One ... morewoman, whom I think is not yet 18, keeps telling him she’s not that kind of girl and just wants to be friends. Another letter is rather“vulgar” in a sense, especially for the 1920’s. It’s written by a girl and I’ll just scan the pages of that letter instead of quote from it or explain it here. I think when she uses the word“across” she might possibly mean having sex. I’m still unsure on that one. Then again I could be totally wrong; I’ll let you decide. One of the letters also talks about him dating a married woman and if the census is right then he’s only 17 and 18 years old when all this is happening. Also because most of the letters are from people living in Chicago and as we all know Chicago in the 1920’s and 30’s was full of gangsters and mobsters. There are several entries about that very thing. In fact one of the letters it says… June 6 th. 1930 Dear Kids. Are you dead or are you still writing or what? I didn’t hear from you for the longest time. It’s raining and raining here in Chicago and once in awhile you can hear the machine guns go boom. Boom! Yep, that’s Chicago and I like it…As ever. Reggie. I really enjoyed going through these letters. Here are a few

23 Handwritten WWII Love Letters Segt Moreland 133rd Inf Reg 34th Division 1945
Up for auction today are 23 handwritten WWII letters written by S/Segt. James L. Moreland while stationed in Italy during the war. He’s writing to his wife who is in Cincinnati at the time and all of James’s letters are from 1945. There is one letter written by a different soldier. Cpl. C. H. Hancock, possibly her brother? I haven’t really read or researched any of these letters and/or the Moreland’s so further research needs to be done. All of them are love letters and all have their covers and many have wonderful letterheads. James was with the 133 rd Infantry Regiment. 34 th Division. I found an amazing article on the web that gives a very detailed history on this Regiment and it all came from a 4 page pamphlet put out by the army itself in 1944. The most interesting thing I found out when learning about his Infantry was that these troops ... morewere the very first to set foot on European soil during WWII. I’ve scanned a few of the letters to give you an idea of the contents and quoted from one. I also found a photo in one and I’m assuming its James. After the quote from the letter is the history behind this Infantry. All of the letters are in great shape but the covers are worn. Some stained and some torn at the top or side… January 17 th. 1845. Italy My Dear Precious Wife. Honey. I sure hope this letter finds you feeling well and every thing ok. I am getting along fine and feeling well. I haven’t got any mail from you yet today Honey, but I am hoping we will have another mail call this evening. How do you like this stationery? The insignia in the upper right hand corner is our regiment insignia. This is the first of this that I have seen. We just got it and I think it is pretty nice. It is too bad I didn’t have some yesterday before I wrote four letters. Precious I love you with all my heart and I miss you more each day. You and your love will always be my most precious possessions and I wouldn’t take the world for either of them. We have so many of the sweetest memories left form our past married life and I kno

Archive 38 Letters Maxwell New Mexico Cattle Rancher 1910s
Archive 38 Letters Maxwell New Mexico Cattle Rancher 1910s This is a wonderful collection of 38 letters from George Thomas Lambert to his wife. They are all from the 1910s and are from his time as the owner of the Keystone Dot Ranch in Maxwell. New Mexico. He gives great detail about life in New Mexico at the time. Most of them have their original envelopes and postmarks and are in good condition. They have great content and are several pages long. Here is a small sample of what is in the letters: I was so pleased to hear that possibly there are buyers for a western horse or two. I probably should have to get them in Texas. To send Ben alone would cost at least $200 with several head the whole car would not cost much more and I would send more. I must reduce the hors here to a working basis. The washing out of the big dam at Hebreere is of ... morecourse the topic and event of the day. A hole started underneath and then worked larger and larger until a gap about 200 feet wide was cut out… Another little child was lost in an irrigating duck the other day at Maxwell. Hardly more than a baby, toddled off and fell in. There was still a little life left when the father got it out but probably the parents didn’t know exactly how to see the child and when Dr Schwald arrived it was too late… There is so much talk of government ownership of everything that anyone can put away any money in that it seems sometimes as if cattle were about as safe as anything…all this socialistic tendency makes one almost sick of the United States…if only someone had lost Teddy in South Africa… The war is by no means a decided thing yet and there surely is great effort needed on Great Britain’s part to conquer. I am eagerly waiting Gorma’s return with the mail. Old Stag still does duty as a chore horse… Did I tell you that the Lee family returned from Oklahoma a few days ago. But you probably noticed in the mail about his accident. The Corey mules having run away with him throwing him out of the wagon and breaking a rib and arm beside a bad blow on

Archive Letters Katy Noyes Family Abolitionist Slave Teacher
Archive Letters Katy Noyes Family Abolitionist Slave Teacher This is a great collection of 6 handwritten letters from the family of Catherine“Katy” Noyes. Katy was a teacher for the freed slaves on St Helena Island in South Carolina during the Civil War. We sold most of this collection earlier this year but have just found these letters. They are primarily to her and to Frank Balch. Her brother-in-law from her sister and other family members. They are all from during the Civil War and have good content. They are several pages long up to 10 pages for one of them. They say in part: Isn’t it splendid that William is coming home. I was completely surprised for I had no more idea of his coming than you had…A letter came for him last evening from Frank relative to his chances of getting something to do under the Emancipation Bureau which they hope ... moreto establish this winter. Please don’t say anything about it for it is so entirely uncertain… Mary Allen understands that Ned Hooper is on Gen Dix’s staff in New York. I should think his friends would rejoice…I’m afraid from your way of speaking that you do not like for yourself the name of Katy. Do you? I would you would say, I have by no means set my heart on it… We went down to the Capitol and saw Frank. In the evening we heard Booth in Richelieu… McClellan is beginning to hold up his end at last isn’t he? Not that I think he has not done it before and is not the news from New Orleans absolutely glorious it seems to me it is about the very best thing we have done during the war. I hope we shall have peace now before long… Check out my! Be sure to add me to your!

2 Letters Tennessee Mississippi Railroad Campaign Civil War Slavery This is a great lot of 2 letters from Charlie of the 20 th Illinois Regiment. They are from October 9 th. 1862 and January 8 th. 1863 and talk about several battles and his time as part of the Mississippi Railroad Campaign that was Grant’s first push to get Vicksburg. They say in part: We have received nothing definite in reference to the battle of Fredericksburg yet we feel and with feelings of deep regret that Burnsides with his splendid army upon which the hopes of a country rested has been defeated…Richmond must fall and in its fall crush the rebellion. We drove the enemy before us for over 40 miles. Our brigade in the advance, the bridges were all destroyed by the retreating rebels to our advance was very slow, the enemies works on the Tallahatchie River were the strongest ... moreI have yet seen but through fear of being attacked in the rear they evacuated previous to our arrival. We reached Oxford Miss on the night of the 3 rd of December having marched a distance of only 57 miles in five days…On the morning of the 4 th our Regt was put on Patrol duty in Oxford where we remained. The other forces still advancing until the 24 th when we were ordered to pull stakes and fall back… Well Isaac I don’t feel in the least discouraged we whipped the enemy as far as we went took about one thousand prisoners and destroyed and eat up a great part of their provisions… We have just received intelligence of the victory of Rosencrants at Murphrysborough. Glorious news, he plays is little game by himself and always wins… I have been in another battle and as usual came out right side up with care… When seventy starving men in Fort Sumpter were fired upon and compelled to surrender and the emblem of our Nationality hauled down from its parapets but a domestic foe tramped beneath the feet of traitors when the fiends of Rebellion in human shape and villains at heart were laying midnight plots to destroy the fabrication of Gods own construction. But when the men of that regt return people will find them like so many mad devils ready to wipe out their wrang’s in blood…I rejoice to see the Union arms triumphant and advancing toward glory and peace… I am happy to say the draft is about to be enforced. I hope the cash cowards will be pressed into service and marched into the jaws of death ... morewhere the rebel balls and disease together may sweep them out of the world to which they are a curse. you may think this sounds savage inhuman and ferocious but I have reason…This story was started by two secessionists of Farmers Valley who have always been my bitterest personal and political enemies have no character of their own they wished to take away mine… Whenever a man has been in the service of his country the poisonous arrows of slander are leveled at him increasingly they are the only bullets the cowardly Northern Rebels dare to use because they can still shield their worthless lines behind the laws… Check out my! 600pc Irish Catholic Family Archive Dineer Danville PA Handwritten Letters 1920-
Up for auction today is a huge group of ephemera and all of them have to do with an Irish Catholic family by the name of Dineer of Danville Pennsylvania. Most of the letters in this group and many of the miscellaneous pieces of ephemera belonged to Mrs. Mary Dineer. There are about 600 pieces in this group and of those there are 150 handwritten letters. Then the rest of the items are deeds. Photos(about 35 photos) receipts, brochures, cards, etc. That count is much higher too because only counted each letter and cover as one piece; not the separate pages. And I didn’t include in that number all the separate photos and miscellaneous pieces of ephemera found in the envelopes. So I’d say you’re actually getting closer to 1,000 pieces. Of the 150 letters. 85 of them are written by her daughter, Sister Mary Sebastian who is attending the“Missionary ... moreSisters of St. Columban” school or foundation in Hyde Park Massachusetts. It opened up in 1947 and her letters were written from 1951-1958. Her letters are long too with most of them being 4 pages or more. Almost all of the letters have letterheads and envelopes with the“Missionary Sisters of St. Columban” printed on them. They are fantastic as far as the content too because it’s all about her becoming a nun. In with this archive came a booklet from the St. Columban foundation and one of Sister Mary Sebastian’s letters alludes to it. She says her photo is in the booklet and I’ve scanned that picture above. It shows her stirring a pot on the stove; that’s our author. Then so many of the letters also have original snap shots inside showing Sister Mary. I’ve scanned a few of those also. There were also two mint condition handkerchiefs; one found in a letter and one found in a vintage Christmas box with a key and a card. She says that the handkerchiefs are a gift from Mother Mary Demma’s and are from the Philippines. Then 30 of the letters are from her son. James(Joe) Dineen who is in the service, WWII, and writes his mother from camp here in the US and then also from w

3 Letters Steamboat Captain Travel Yukon River 1908 Baseball Alaska
3 Letters Steamboat Captain Travel Yukon River 1908 Baseball Alaska This is a wonderful group of 3 handwritten letters from Ed Heckmann a steamboat captain working on the Yukon River from 1908. They have wonderful content and are in good condition. They say in part: Do you care much for baseball? I do I want you to cheer for me when the St Louis Browns win the American League Pennant. But the battle will be over before you receive this. I hope the Browns take the lead. They are great players. I will get off of this boat tonight and go back on the John C Carr. This boat goes to Dawson and ties up for the winter. Our boat will be running until the ice comes about the 15 th of October. Then I will probably have to walk 400 miles to get to the coast. I will get home some time in December. One day we saw five vessels drifting with the ice in the ... moresame condition that our ship was in. All the ships so far have gotten in except one of the Seattle passenger boats and a US revenue cutter. The Seattle ship. The Ohio, left on the 1 st and she hasn’t arrived at Nome. We got real near to her about a week ago and got some provisions from them but went off and left them up to that time they had had no accident. It’s too bad they didn’t follow me but that Captain has an idea he’s a navigator and doesn’t want to be shown The second boat to arrive at Nome came very near sinking. They must have gotten into the ire with some speed. They punched a hole in our ship but didn’t sink her after that accident they were more careful. One day we saw a herd of walruses on the ice. There must have been 200 of them. They are monstrous animals. Some of them must weight a thousand pounds. I tried to get a picture of them but there wasn’t light enough…We landed here yesterday at noon are busy getting the boats ready for the river. One of our boats will leave tomorrow or next day… We are beginning to wonder how the ice is in the Bering Sea. Our wireless operator is still able to speak to Seattle. When we get to the pass we can pick up the station at

Historical Letters Oregon Progressive Republican Party McMinnville McCusker Loop
There are 13 typed and signed letters in this lot and they are written to Kirk P. Loop of McMinnville Oregon who was the cities postmaster(among other things) in the early 1900’s. Kirk was born on May 4 th. 1879 in Lone Mountain Tennessee to the parents of Joseph Lewis and Sarah Manila Farmer Loop. He was married to Hulda Aebi Loop and had a son by the name of Paul Allen Loop. The best things about these letters is that most of them have a letterhead(see scans) from the“Headquarters of the Progressive Republican Campaign Committee. The letters are signed by Thomas McCusker who was actually the Oregon Campaign manager to Senator La Follette who was running against Taft at the time. La Follette had a nickname of“Fighting Bob” and served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. He was the Governor of Wisconsin and was also a U.S. Senator ... morefrom Wisconsin from 1906-1925. He ran for President of the United States as the nominee of his own Progressive Party in 1925. But during the time these letters were written(1912) Some very interesting things were going on for La Follette as you’ll see in the following quotes found on the web… In 1911. La Follette set up a campaign to mobilize the progressive elements in the Republican Party behind his presidential bid. Mentally and physically exhausted, enduring anxiety from an impending operation for his thirteen-year-old daughter who was suffering from tuberculosis, La Follette made a disastrous speech in February 1912 before a gathering of leading magazine editors that caused many to doubt his stability. Many of his supporters deserted him for Theodore Roosevelt. At the highly charged Republican Convention, La Follette received 41 delegate's votes to eventual victor William Howard Taft's 561. Embittered, La Follette opposed both Roosevelt and William Howard Taft in the 1912 election. When his former ally, Governor Francis E. McGovern, supported Roosevelt, La Follette broke with him, allowing the conservative Republicans under Emanuel Philipp to take control of
Handwritten WWII Love Letters Evangeline Poteat Bakersville Charlotte NC 1918-45
These 21 handwritten letters and most of them are WWII era. All but three of the letters are addressed to Evangeline Poteat who was from Boone and also Charlotte North Carolina. Evangeline was born in 1922 and was the daughter of Earnest and Pauline Poteat. The first three letters are actually written by Evangeline’s father Earnest who was a WWI soldier and he was writing home to his mother. Mrs. W. G. Poteat, who was in Bakersville North Carolina. I’m not sure where he’s stationed but I know in the first two letters he is overseas. Those three letters date from November 1918 to April 1919. Then Evangeline’s letters begin and they date from January 1943 through July 1945. Evangeline attended Appalachian State Teachers College and in fact if you use Ancestry’s web site you can look up Evangeline and see several photos of her from the College’s ... moreyearbook. I really wanted to see a photo of her after reading these letters too because she was quite the beauty according to the three soldiers who wrote to her. In fact here’s what one young man said about her in his letter… Kingsport Tenn. Jan. 13 th. 1943 Dear Evangeline. Well. I certainly did feel honored when I opened your letter and found I was first on your list, even though it was in the correspondence end. Most anyone, if normal, would feel the same way toward a good looking girl like you. Now, this is not a line. I just don’t believe in not expressing one honest opinion. You are the type of girl most boys have as a model…Always, Fred. Between the 21 letters there are 70 pages of handwriting and three different men writing to her and all three want to marry her. There names are Fred D. Baker. Cpl. Forrest Morgan and then the majority of the letters are written by V. T. Davis who does end up marrying Evangeline. He’s stationed in Burma and India at the time these letters are written. The other two young men are at military camps here in the U.S. One of the letters has two lips on it as if someone had kissed it with dark red lipstick. Not sure if they are Ev

3 Letters Signed by Portland Oregon Senator Mayor Harry Lane Progressive 1907
I’m in a bit of a quandary. I’m very passionate about keeping family groups together but for the first time I’m going to split up a letter lot but here are the reasons why. I just purchased from the antique show here in Oregon a group of letters and all of them were addressed to Kirk P. Loop of McMinnville Oregon. He was a rural letter carrier. Postmaster and held other prominent positions during his life time. The reason I’m putting them in specific groups and selling them that way is that they are not personal letters but letters concerning his postal activities or his various positions in other vocations and political situations, etc. I know there are different collectors out there who specialize in political signatures, or specific letterheads, or political and fraternal organizations so this is the way I’ve split them up. It won’t be ... morejust one letter at a time but several related groups at a time. Plus there are so many different categories that I could list them on EBay that just picking two would be so difficult; another reason I’m splitting them up. Hopefully this all makes sense) And I will be listing them through out this coming week that way if you want to bid on several lots and have them sent together I can do that. So, again, forgive me if this insults anyone, and again I don’t usually do this but felt it ok in this situation. None of the letters are from Mr. Loop, all are to him. None came with the original covers and I have no idea where those covers are. Also please note that the yellow line(or pink one) that might be shown in the scans above is only from my scanner and not on the letter itself. This is a perfect example why I’m doing this. These three letters were all signed by Harry Lane(and typed on his personal letterhead) Mr. Lane was best known for holding the office of Mayor of Portland Oregon for two terms but the rest of his career and private life was really amazing. The best way I can describe it is to quote from a web site called. Oregon Encyclopedia; Oregon History” Harry

40 Handwritten Letters Oregon Pioneer Family Lesourd Mathiot New Orleans 1893-02
These 40 handwritten letters tell such a sad sad story of two Oregon pioneer families. The Mathiot’s and the Lesourd’s. Most of the letters revolve around John A. Lesourd and his two children Frank and Celestine Celestine ended up marrying Nelville A. Mathiot. The letters are mainly between brother and sister and have to do with a family quarrel that began when Frank and Celestine’s mother(Bridget Burns Lesourd) passed away in 1894 and their father remarried to a woman by the name of Livonia Arietta Drake two years later. And get this; Livonia was 17 years younger than John! Sadly nothing was settled and there is a very heart wrenching ending to these letters; one I’ll get to in a minute. First I want to give you a little background into these families. Both John and his son Frank were mechanical engineers. In fact the census lists John also ... moreas a draughtsman and pattern maker. John was born in France in 1832. I couldn’t find a lot of information on the Lesourd family but I do know that John married his first wife. Bridget Josephine Burns, in The Dalles Oregon. Included with this group of letters is the original newspaper obituary of Mrs. Bridget Lesourd. And I quote… 1894-THE LATE MRS. LESOURD; HER FUNERAL AND BURIAL IN RIVERVIEW CEMETERY. The funeral of the late Mrs. Lesourd took place yesterday. The interment being at Riverview cemetery and was largely attended by French residents of the city and other friends and family. A friend furnishes the following memorial sketch of Mrs. Lesourd: Mrs. Bridget Josephine, wife of John A. Lesourd, is another pioneer gone. While, from her restricted sphere, she has not left a luminous train of light to the gaze of all. The qualities of her heard had endeared her to all who knew her. She first made her home in Oregon when the best vehicle provide for the wealthy newcomers was a springless dray(wagon) In the early 60’s when the red man was on the warpath. She refused to be left behind, but valiantly confronted the dangers lurking in the Indian Country and followed

Gentleman & Lady Town & Country Magazine 1784 Boston Letters of American Farmer
The Gentleman and Lady Town and Country Magazine or Repository of Instruction and Entertainment. Boston: Printed and Sold by Weeden and Barrett. At E. Russell's Office, Essex-Street, 1784. 43-80 pp. The first magazine published in the United States to appeal directly to women for their readership. And one of only two magazine's being published in the young republic at that time. The lagging post-war economy proved to much for the magazine's then unorthodox marketing strategy to overcome and it ran for only eight issues between May& December of 1784. Contained here. Among other pieces, are an extract from John Hector St. John de Crèvecœur's Letters from an American Farmer. A poetical ode to Washington, and essays on suicide and the poisonous effects of wild parsley, and"A remarkable account of a snake. Disbound. ... moreA few marginal losses, affecting the text on the final leaf. Which is also detached.

Date: May 14th& Jan. 1st(1870-1885) Postmarks: Boston. Massachusetts– CDS. Cambridge, Mass. CDS with“Sta. Stamp: 2 cent Andrew Jackson(Banknote Issues) Pages: 4(1) 4(2) Total of 8. Size: 4 1/2 x 7(1) 6 x 5 3/8(2) Condition: The letters have folds/creases. Few tears(largest 3/4 inch) and some soiling. The envelopes have creases, tears and soiling. Content: Two handwritten letters from Frances Dunlap Lowell(d. 1885) The second wife of James Russell Lowell(1819-1891) who was a famous poet, critic, editor, and diplomat. Both letters are signed, Fanny Lowell, and are from Elmwood which was the estate of James Russell Lowell. There is no year on the ... moreeither letter but had to have been written sometime between 1870 and 1885 the year of Frances died. The letters have interesting content, including Mr. Lowell’s(James Russell Lowell) health including the sudden occurrence of violent pain which a Dr. Wyman is working on a cure and a future trip by, Mr. L, to Baltimore(Maryland) She also mentions lectures of a Mr. Wicks(Weild? Mother and Marcia, Mabel, a French Lecture, Portland(Maine) women’s rights, Miss Ballard, and household issues. One of the more interesting parts of the letters is where Lowell mentions a pearl necklace worth fifty-thousand dollars as an engagement gift to a neighbor’s girl who is engaged to a man worth six million dollars. There are several possibilities of whose marriage this was. One prime candidate is Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s daughter Edith Longfellow who married Richard Henry Dana III on January 10th 1878. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a neighbor of James Russell Lowell and the letter that mentions the necklace and engagement is dated Jan. 1st. However this is circumstantial evidence and there is no direct proof. Cambridge had numerous wealthy families who had
