19th Century Victorian Cast Iron 2pc Fireplace Summer Cover& Surround. Both have been recently sandblasted and primed. Ready to paint! Highly ornamented. American antique cast iron interior fireplace two-piece summer cover. The ornate surround is 31.5"T x 28"W, made by T Bent& Son N.Y. style No. 168. The summer cover features a center pierced cartouche with ornate pierced floral design below. It measures 26"Tx16"W. It was made by James L Jackson& Bros style N. 252, it also has B 168 hand punched in the iron above the makers name. The summer cover fits perfectly into the surround. Antique Cast Iron Fireplace Surround-Frame-Cover-Ornate Victorian w/Grates
The first thing I would like to point out about this surround is that it does not have a can of krylon sprayed on it to cover it's imperfections. I've restored enough antique cars to know. It has been sandblasted and coated with a good laquer based paint. When you have done this, you know it when you see and feel it. I could almost say it's powder coated but I'm not positive. It's sometimes hard to tell the difference between those 2 finishes. If you buy it, you will agree, it's not been sprayed with a can of krylon to flake off in a short period of time, it's been restored the right way and sandblasting old cast iron or steel is the only way to do it properly so it will last. It's not highly decorative, quiet simply ornate designs like a fan in the 2 upper corners. The ears for mounting the piece are still ... moreon it, all 4 of them. The only flaw I see is in the grate, you can see that it had definitely been used, the bottom part of the grates has been hot enough to break off some of those grates. If your going to use it, that can be repaired. This one was probably restored just to be used for looks and it looks great. The outside frame measures 27 1/4" tall and 23" wide. The opening is 24" at the center height and 16" wide. Very standard measurements for a surround, nothing hard to match for a standard fireplace opening. This surround is ready to be mounted. It's an antique cast iron summer cover for an American victorian fireplace. Put in place in warm summer months to hide the open hearth or gas heater. There is a wonderful raised design in an oval panel of a fair maiden playing music and a child dancing. It has an old gold paint surface. Some of the photos were taken in the shade. Please scroll down under this description for additional views. Late Victorian ornamental cast iron panel 9 7/8" wide. 20" high with 10 3/4" wide mounting sections top and bottom. Summer covers were used during warm months to close fireplace openings off from the room interior. Although there were practical reasons for a summer cover, the Victorians loved the idea of one more ornamental surface in their interiors and many foundries cast these pretty architectural covers. Some companies offered a choice of panel insert that was a separate casting from the surrounding frame and I believe that this is one of those insert panels. There are no foundry marks or numbers that I can see on the back. The high relief image is Diana or Artemis, goddess of the hunt. She is semi-clad and reaches for an arrow in the quiver on her back, all ... morethe while watching the stag in the foliage below. A flock of birds fly overhead and behind her is a tall palm. I think this panel is nickel plated and has never been painted. The nickel plating is worn revealing the cast iron underneath. There is a little film in some of the crevices from silver polish and if I were keeping this piece, I would simply clean the old polish remains off and give the surface a coat of clear wax. The piece weighs almost 11 pounds and is in sturdy condition. The four holes make this an easy-to-mount piece that would be stunning on a brick wall. This amazing antique Castiron fireplace cover comes from a building built in 1901. I purchased a co-op in the building located in Harlem. Back in July. Upon renovating I noticed this treasure hidden behind a plaster wall. If you're a history buff you'll know that buildings built in the early 1900s in Harlem at one point used gas in each unit to keep these fireplaces lit. You can still see the old gas pipe sticking out of the ground. Next to the fireplace it was hidden in. It's covered in dust that can be easily wiped off I wanted to preserve the antique look so I left as is. I'm not sure what its worth but it's definitely a collectors item. This Antique Cast Iron Fireplace Surround and Summer Cover features a fantastic Native American Scene of two seated Indians- one holding a bow on a stump. At a campsite shootin' the breeze after a successful hunt with a fire in front of a teepee, their beached canoe from the river in the foreground all in a dense woodland. All matching numbers on all four pieces of 474. Good shape with the cover having some copper plate loss and oxidation. With no repairs what-so-ever. The knobs are original with one being slightly dented. The surround has been repaired and welded and has been touched up with paint. The surround is common, where as the cover is not. This measures 30 1/4" wide by 30" tall overall and weighs 47 pounds actual. Pictures were taken inside with this being bone dry- neither wet down nor oiled.
