Description of item for sale: This large and impressive fireplace surround/mantel with matching tapered overmantel is from France and it dates to the mid/late 1800's. It is a classic example of the French hunting style that was popular during that period. This one is especially nice because it is made from solid walnut. Overall this surround is in very good antique condition. Straight and solid with no major damage. We note that one trim section is missing: just above the set of arches there are a series of peg holes that probably originally held a crown rail or a set of finials(see the last photo in the set) Since this missing section is over six feet above the floor, the holes are not normally visible. They could be filled or covered with another section of trim if desired. In addition, ... morethere are the usual minor chips and scratches that are the result of over a century of use the most notable are several cracks in the large panel behind the hunting medallion(photos) Finally, there is a small amount of old dry rot at the back lower corner on the inside-not visible on the outside and not structurally or cosmetically significant(see photos) Dimensions: 106.5" high, 49.5" wide overall.
