The guillotine shutter beneath a frieze panel cast in low relief with a field of diapered cross-hatchings and crysanthamum"mon" roundels in the Japanese taste, the overhead and flanking panels ready to take tiles, the grate stamped to the rear with a registration mark. Thomas Jeckyll. 1827-1881, was one of the pioneer designer-architects of his day and only recently is his work starting to be properly re-examined. A major retrospective exhibition at The Bard Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts in New York was held in 2003.
