The sale is for this gorgeous antique tile surround that was made by New Jersey tile companies in the late 1800's. It is in very very good condition and is comprised of 16 six inch squares made up of 32 tiles. there is some residual mortar and one tile has a few abrasions. The grape and vine tiles(6" square) are pictured on page 45 of Karlson's book AMERICAN ART TILE(the bible of American tile collecting) They have a very heavily raised design with a negative concave of the design on the reverse. They are attributed to the Providential Tile Company. The corner tiles are each comprised of 5 tiles. The center tile design(4.25" square) is pictured on page 47 of Karlson's book attributed to the Old Bridge Tile Company. They are surrounded by Triangular tiles made by the Trent Tile Company. Late Victorian era cast iron fireplace opening surround. 27 3/4" high, 22 1/2" wide, inside opening is 16" wide. Foundry style number"40" in raised numbers on the back. Design is simple and geometric with a diamond shape center top, very simplified stylized flowers and foliage on either side. The little arms sticking out in the opening would have been for the summer cover to lean against. There is quite a bit of surface rust and quite a few old crusty coats of paint on this surround. The molding details will be much more obvious with restoration. Circa 1850-60 arched cast iron fireplace surround embossed"S. S. BENT N.Y. No 149" The surround measures 32" high and 30 1/2" wide. The inside opening is 27" high and 18" wide. It extends out from the surface 1 1/2" but also extend a bit into the fireplace opening for a total depth of 3" The iron is strong and intact but it has heavy surface rust front and back. This was a very typical early and mid 19th century surround for smaller rooms like a bedroom. White Marble Fireplace Mantle, Surround, Metal Insert and Screen
You can see from the picture that this mantle is not installed. My contractor called me from a sale. Told me about the mantle, sent a picture, said it would fit and asked me whether I wanted to buy it for my living room. I agreed and was prepared to do the work to restore it. It turns out that it didn't fit once I got it home. AHHHHH! I would really like to re-coup my investment so please buy it if you can use it or want to fix it up and re-sell it. The mantle is a soft white with gray veins. The surround has less color. The screen is a brass color. I don't know whether it is solid brass but judging from it's age my guess is that it is. The screen itself has some rust on it. It will be a beautiful addition to any fireplace when it is restored and you will have gotten a bargain. ANTIQUE CAST IRON 5 PIECE FIREPLACE SURROUND FRAME & SUMMER COVER ORNATE SOLID
This is a beautiful antique cast iron five piece fire place surround frame and summer cover. It is in very good condition with no breaks.Chips or cracks. There are holes for bolting it to the fireplace and it is all complete. It has gold leaf paint on the ornate details. The Outside frame measures 43" by 42" the summer cover insert frame measures 32" wide by 33 1/2" high and the summer cover opening measures 28" high and 21" wide. These 2 matching antique cast iron fireplace surrounds are about 31" x 27 1/2" and are 18 1/4" from the inside opening dimension. They can be sold separately or together. These surrounds along with a few other architectural pieces came from our uncle's house in Steubenville. Ohio after he passed away. They had to demolish the house, so I rescued a few pieces before they were destroyed forever. I have the origianl mortgage deed from the house where it shows great grandparents bought the house from relatives in 1927. We are pleased to offer this antique fireplace surround. This is a very nice piece and in very good condition. This set includes the fireplace surround. Summer cover and atta. ched grate. The fireplace has a very textured surface which is gilded and a coppery gold in color. The insert grate has columnal design which is reminiscent of the Greek Parthenon or Roman Pantheon. The removable summer cover door has a knob on each side. This unit is in very good condition with minimal evidence of age. The gilded finish is still very rich on the back of the summer cover door(see photo 9) There are no areas of rusting and the fireplace is structurally quite nice. There are numbers on the back.
