This beautiful screen is tri fold and features an exquisite ... morehand painted outdoor scene. The screen is arched with the center section taller than the side panels. The scene features 2 large egret or crane birds in a marsh or shallow pool. One of the birds is standing erect while the other is searching for food in the water and his head is lowered to the ground. There are beautiful tree branches overhead and cattails and lily pads in the water. The screen is not marked but has an Asian or perhaps, French Chinoiserie look to it. It is accomplished on very thick wood panels, either oak or perhaps cedar. The panels have been hinged together with 2 of the original hinges still in place. The original hinges were initially nailed with the original nails still in place. The hinges were replaced and added to at some point but even the replacements are quite old. The screen is very primitive as you can see buy the legs and the unfinished wood around the ached tops. It is in good condition. It is structurally sound and stands as it should. The wood is aged and does have some splitting but nothing that puts the structure at risk and certainly nothing distracting. The paint has peeled and yellowed over the years which enhances the antiquity of this extraordinary screen. The screen is quite functional and would also make a beautiful wall hanging. This is a special old screen. The screen measures as follows: The total width of the three panels is 31" The center panel is 11" wide and the two side panels are 10" wide. The tallest. Center point of the screen is 39" The side panels are 36" tall at their tallest measurements and graduate to 31" The screen is VERY HEAVY and the wood is 3/4" in thickness. They each ... moreweigh 20 lbs. They stand 16" tall. 11" wide, and 22" long. T hey have not been altered or painted. The c ast iron is in good condition. One andiron has two hol es: a hole near the wa ist and one on the cheek. You can spot the holes by the white on that andiron. The last two pics show the small cracks or holes. Our guess is that the white stuff is high temp putty put on by the factory when the andirons were cast to secure those thin areas/cracks that happened during casting. Since they were sand casted. Its not an exact science and the thickness varies. Also the one with the putty on it bends to the back a little bit. I suspect the original paint burned off and thats why you can see the putty. The logs fit properly in the dogs. They could easily be painted again or oiled. But I chose to leave them in their original state. If it is not pictured. The bevelled glass mirror is 35 1/2" wide x 17 3/8" in height. The mantel is in very good condition with normal patina. It is nailed to a 2"x4" frame to make it easier and safer to transport.
