Up for auction I have a nice art deco handle set. Glass knobs that are about 2" diameter. And free of chips. One odd thing about these is that one side, both back plate and metal on the knob are brass, and the other side they are silver in color. This is an amazing find! It was in the back of a barn at an estate/moving sale. The lady thought her uncle had once run a"general store" and presumed this was on the front door. It is quite large. Measuring approx. 16-1/4" x 4-1/16" and with a long wooden handle. There are two metal plates, one for each side of a door. Made by Sargent& Co. 3rd photo shows their mark. It weighs over 6 pounds! The piece with the handle has been repaired, but it was very well done- with some type of stabllizer on the back. Somehow, it just ads to its character and shows the age rather well. These often were put on various house doors of Victorian style houses. These are the old style square shaft style door knob from the late 1800's. It is a set with a rare 3/8" square shaft. It is in original condition and washed with water. All the history is still here and not polished away. The knobs are is heavy duty solid cast bronze or brass. Aesthetic style pocket French door hardware from 1870s home Sargent Reading ?
This listing is for the original hardware from a home which was built around 1870. Because there are two locks but only one set of left and right matching handles I'm not sure exactly what I have. I believe the matching handles with latches rather than knobs are from pocket doors that separated the front parlor from the back parlor. The pattern is what I call aesthetic style but I could not find the exact pattern in the locks and hardware book I borrowed from the library. Possibly Sargent. Reading, Branford or Yale. The smaller lock is damaged on one side by the keyhole. The two handle plates are the same size although they do not look that way in my pictures. Here is a complete set(except for the key) of a Victorian door set.two escutcheon plates. Sargent& Co. lock, both door knobs with the center shaft. The door plates are 8-1/4" high and 2-1/4" in width. The knobs are 2-1/4" and both have the patterns embossed on them. I'm not certain if these are brass or bronze- they are not magnetic. But definitely would look fantastic if they were cleaned. I can't find any cracks or breaks- the set is in very good condition. Set of 3 Vintage ornate door knob backplates with skeleton key holes. They are cast with copper plating. They are heavy and solid but very ornate. They measure about 8 3/4 in. tall and around 2 1/2 in. wide at the center. Center to center from the knob to key hole is about 2 1/2 in. Center to center top to bottom screw holes are about 5 7/8 in. Center to center side to side screw holes measure about 1 7/8 in. The backs are stamped 7858 1/2. These backplates would make a wonderful addition to any project.
