This is an amazing find! It was in the back of a barn at an estate/moving sale. The lady thought her uncle had once run a"general store" and presumed this was on the front door. It is quite large. Measuring approx. 16-1/4" x 4-1/16" and with a long wooden handle. There are two metal plates, one for each side of a door. Made by Sargent& Co. 3rd photo shows their mark. It weighs over 6 pounds! The piece with the handle has been repaired, but it was very well done- with some type of stabllizer on the back. Somehow, it just ads to its character and shows the age rather well. When sitting flat on a surface it stands 1/4 up off the surface. The material is 1/8 of an inch thick. The Lettering"PUSH" is another plate in and of itself that has been fastened to the full plate by the manufacturer. Antique Door Push Plate -- Octagonal -- Beveled & Wheel Engraved Tinted Glass
Measuring about 3½" x 8¾" And maybe 1/8" thick, this glass plate seems like some kind of new old stock that I had planned to use as a push plate on a door, but I never got around to it and now I've moved and my doors just don't fit this style. First let me say I'm not 100 percent sure it was originally intended as a push plate, but let me describe it and then I'll tell you why I have reservations. It is. As you can see, irregularly octagonal, and the glass is tinted a sort of Victorian Rose color. One side is beveled all the way around the edges, while the other side is flat, but with the engraved symmetrical pattern that you can see in the pictures. The pattern seems to have been wheel engraved by hand(rather than acid etched) since the symmetry is not perfect, and the lines have quite a tangible ... moredepth to them. But I'm no glass expert so don't take my word for it. The first thing that strikes me as odd is that it has only one mounting hole- most push plates have at least two. If not four. But it would still work as a door plate, even with only one screw. The other thing is that the decorative effect of the engraving is mostly lost when that part of the glass is mounted flush against the door. It seems to be crying out to be hung or mounted where the light can shine through it, for instance hanging in front of a window or as a rather large and elaborate prism hanging from a gigantic chandelier. I'm just sayin' If you have any insights or ideas, please share, I'm always willing to learn. If any of our pictures fail to show up. Here is a great find a solid brass nameplate stamped with raised letters. ~ PUSH ~. 2 3/8" x 1 3/8" original brass nails BUT ONLY 3. this are an old stock item that was never used. thats why still bright as has been wrapped up since new. there is some light tarnish on the bottom that could be buffed out if desired. in it's original wrapper( included) until I opened to take the pictures. the letters are raised.this is.
