1920s Banjolin. The banjolin is a very. Very rare instrument, simlar to that of a Ukelin(a bowed zither) It was made by Reed Musical Company in Chicago in the late 1920s. This particular instrument is in exceptional condition. It has no cracks, warps, or discoloration. All of the strings are intact as are all of the posts and the bridges. Though I didn't do a very good job taking the photos, the original painted labeling is fabulous- it is a very beautiful and playable instrument. I have also included a bow, the original sheet music, the original box(which is coming apart slightly) and the original sales slip dated Aug 14, 1929. I have started the biiding somehwhat higher on this instrument than I would a Ukelin- and that is because its very much one-of-a-kind. I've been in the business of researching and collecting antique instruments ... morefor some time and have never seen another one exactly like this style. As with the Ukelin and Violin Uke. The instrument is meant to be placed on a table and. While the right hand plays the melody on the treble strings with a violin bow, accompanying chords are played on the bass strings with the left hand using either the fingers or a pick. Ukelin circa 1920s IMC One Sound Hole (Bowed Psaltery Zither) w/bow
1920s Ukelin. International Musical Corporation One sound hole. Rectangular box style. This Ukelin was offered for sale by the International Musical Corporation. In the mid 1920s. It is easy to date this particular instrument because of its style, type and label. This Ukelin is in excellent physical and playable condition. There are no warps or cracks. It is missing several strings, you can replace these simple enough with a similar guage guitar string at your local music store- ask for their help! You can also order Ukelin strings sets online but those can be fairly expensive. Obviously there are scuffs and scratches, but for its age it looks pretty spectacular. I am also including a vintage bow with this item. Often on a time-payment plan beginning in about 1923 until 1964. And were intended for home music-making by persons without a formal musical education. The instrument is meant to be placed on a table with the larger end toward the performer, and, while the right hand plays the melody on the treble strings with a violin bow, accompanying chords are played on the bass strings with the left hand using either the fingers or a pick. Each string and chord group is numbered. And sheet music is provided in a special numerical system intended to simplify playing for persons unable to read standard musical notation. Kanoune/Stringed Zither/Dulcimer/Psaltery/Egyptian Harp
Kanoune for parts or display or restoration. Kanoune is a string instrument found in Near Eastern traditional music based on Maqamat. It is basically a zither with a narrow trapezoidal soundboard. Nylon or PVC strings are stretched over a single bridge poised on fish-skins on one end. Attached to tuning pegs at the other end. Kanoune used in Turkey have 26 courses of strings, with three strings per course. It is played on the lap by plucking the strings with two tortoise-shell picks, one in each hand, or by the fingernails, and has a range of three and a half octaves, from A2 to E6. The kanoune also has special latches for each course, called mandals. These small levers, which can be raised or lowered quickly by the performer while the instrument is being played, serve to change the pitch of a particular course slightly by altering the string ... morelengths. While Armenian kanounes employ half-tones and Arabic kanounes quarter-tones, typical Turkish kanounes divide the equal-tempered semitone of 100 cents into 6 equal parts, yielding 72 equal divisions(or commas) of the octave. Not all pitches of 72-tone equal temperament are available on the Turkish kanoune, however, since kanoune makers only affix mandals for intervals that are demanded by performers. Some kanoune makers choose to divide the semitone of the lower registers into 7 parts instead for microtonal subtlety at the expense of octave equivalences. Hundreds of mandal configurations are at the player's disposal when performing on an ordinary Turkish kanoune. Very Rare Kauoja Tashiagoto Japanese Harp circa 1950 (Keyed Zither)
Kauoja Tashiagoto Japanese Harp circa 1950 The name Taishōgoto(大正琴) derives from the Taisho Period(1912–1926) when the instrument first appeared in Japan. The Taishōgoto is a type of zither. With a long acoustic sound box with strings stretched over it. This instrument features numbered typewriter style keys that press metal bars over the strings. The right hand strums the strings on the right side of the instrument with a pick, while the left hand is used to press down on the keys that change the pitches of the strings. The Taishōgoto bears a close resemblance to the Bulbul Tarang from India, and the Akkordolia from Germany, all sharing the same principle of using keys to press down on strings to change their pitch. This particular instrument is from the 1950s. It is in fairly good condition. With the exception a crack on the base of the ... morebox, which does not affect the sound quality. Offered for sale is an original. Non restored, not cleaned, early production hand made wooden guitar-zither. Manufactured by Friederich Menzenhauer. The label on the interior of the sound chamber states that the unit was patented on May 29, 1894. The address is listed as 87-101 Ferry Street, Jersey City, New Jersey. The tag also refers to a model as Chich something, as the upper part of the label is not readable. The face of the guitar-zither. And the musical scale are in decent condition. There are 46 string tuning holders, and 39 of them still have strings attached. The face also has a gold, red, and blue patriotic crest located on the upper left hand corner of the instrument. VINTAGE Instrument ZITHER HARP in Box Keys & some music Possibly German HARP?
A vintage musical instrument what I believe to be a zither harp from what I can find when I search it on the internet. There is a paper inside that says list of music for the German Harp so this may be what it is? I am not going to pretend I know anything about this piece. One thing I do know for sure is this is definitely an old piece. There are two keys included that are probably for tuning purposes and some music pieces. They may be the original pieces of music that came with this but again. I am not sure. It appears some of the papers are actually instructions on how to play this. It is from my grandmother's estate. It is in what appears to be it's original box that does have some water marks on it and the end is torn a bit. The underside of the box has some staining to it. The instruments was obviously improperly stored with string tension pulling the top"deck" loose. I believe this instrument to be a good candidate for repair or restoration due to the lack of wear or damage such as splits. Up for auction is a Columbia Zither Special No. 2. All strings are intact and attached. The key is also present. There is also 3 sheets of original music with the instruments. There is an 11 inch crack on the back of the instrument as shown in an above picture. The rest of the instrument is in good condition. The instrument is in its original box which is in very poor condition. There is a gray wooden box that holds the instrument and its original box. This instrument was made in the USA.

1901 PHONOHARP ZITHER with ORIGINAL BOX KEY and PAPERS
Bob's Template I found this old ZITHER at an estate sale. Though it does not say Phonoharp on it I believe that it is a Phonoharp because of the evidence that came with it. A key with a P on it. A letter sent to the owner from the Phonoharp co. with a tag and a 1901 Phonoharp catalogue written on it"This is the Zither you wanted" There is also some old Zither music with it. The original box has seen better days. Also the Zither has a section along the bottom the will need to be re-glued.There is nothing cracked or broken in that section it just has come unglued. I loosened the strings and took off the little brass pin feet on the bottom to take the stress off of the wood. There are a few strings missing. I am not sure what else it came with so what you see in the pictures is what you will be getting. In the sound hole it says"CLASS ... moreINSTRUMENT" I am selling this in as is condition. Rare Museum Piece1873 Washburn Concert Zither Mint Condition w/Original Case
1873 Washburn American Zither. Very rare one-of-a kind musuem quality instrument in amazing mint condition! This Washburn Zither was made by Lyon& Healey in Chicago about 1873– at the time it cost more to buy this very high quality zither than to purchase a house. Washburn was perhaps the finest instrument maker in the world at the time and this may very well be one the finest concert zither ever made. This particular instrument has been the center piece of A World Of Music(please read below) for the past few years. We have decided to sell it in hopes of a finding a good home for it. Rather than mothball it. The value of this instrument is off the charts- I have always estimated it at $7,000- $10,000 but a University professor(whose field was Early American Instruments) claimed that it was closer to 20k. He had never seen one except for ... morethe photos. And even though I am well researched in such instruments, I have never seen another one- I believe there is one similar in the Smithsonian. So.this opening bid price of $499 is a steal, if it goes for that. It comes with the original case. All of the strings and hardware are intact and in working order. There is one very slight surface crack. I tried to show it in a close up photo. It is more of a scratch than a crack. So.this instrument has never been restored- this is its original condition. Also. Please note the size of this instrument. This is not your run of the mill zither. It is much larger than that, as you can see in the photos. This concert zither is also known as a fretted zither-it has a fingerboard affixed to its soundboard. Like that of a guitar but much shorter in length. Five strings pass over this fingerboard. And the performer plays these strings like a guitar, picking them with the right hand and making various different notes by pushing down on the strings with the left hand. Just some wear& tear consistent with an item of this age. One string is missing and will need to be replaced. It is missing 3 of 6 keys on the front and 6 strings. There have been 3 holes drilled into the back to make it a wall hanger. Up for bid is a very unusual piece hard to find. This is a violin that I believe is played with the instrument across your lap or like a mandolin. This is from the Hawaiian Art Violin Company Jersey City. NJ on Ferry street. It has all the strings as far as I can tell and will play but definately needs a tune up. The labels inside the neck and body both read the same. They also feature cherubs and a nice design circling the openings. Odd antique fretted fiddle violin with 3 feet. Folk instrument? bowed zither?
I have come up with ziltch while trying to research this critter. Body is 14" about 22" overall. Fingerboard is about 9 3/4" to the"nut" fret. Has 3 bone feet with one a replacement. No sound post found. Has a tunnel under the fingerboard(sympathetic string pathway? Has some cracks on shoulders(pictures) No bridge there now. Seems straight forward to get back into service. Has zither type peg tuners. Has a metal tail piece. I mostly have it to get the dimentions measured so I can make a copy someday. Last shot at this item.

I have arrived at that date because in 1897 Menzenhauer and Schmidt w ent into business together and by 2000 the business was transferred to Oscar Schmidt in that 31-41 Ferry Street Jersey Street NJ location. By 1902 that address changed to 87-101 and the label clearly says the 31-41 address. The zither measures 19 inches in len gth at the longest point and 12 1/2 inches at the widest point 31 tuning pins I am not sure if the strings are original however they do look old. Top banner label says: Menzenhauer Guitar Zither Patented May 29 th 1894 Decal around the sound opening has a small mar on the left side. Vertical paper label over wood strip has edge wear Chord decal ... moreis intact Edges of instrument/veneer has wear Needs a good cleaning/tuning and possibly restoration Horizontal scratch on the back that is pictured and also a c rack on the back which is pi ctured. Instrument does not appear to have separation at glue areas which is common in antique instruments. I do see a faint crack on the fret board from age and that is pictured. Metal case is included. Case measures approx 2 0 3/4 inches by 13 19/16 inches. Has green tape residue which is pictured and wear/rusting. Included is an old tuning key and a autoharp song folio. I have a very cool antique zither autoharp made by Menzenhauer from around the turn of the century. Condition is always subjective but I think overall this is in very good condition for it's age and when comparing to other's found online. I would say this one is slightly better condition. All of these that I have seen will have cracks in the wood near the sound hole, this one has minimal cracking on the top/front and has a very minor crack along the bottom, but the cracking is far less severe that others I have seen, I have tried to illustrate this as best as possible in my pictures. The gold etching is in nice shape, all strings are in tact and overall this is a very nice piece. I will ship this fully insured to auction value. Antique Guitar Zither Franz Schwarzer 1880-1890 Music With Tuner Original Case This is a VERY hard to find early Franz Schwarzer zither. I believe this to be between 1880 and 1890 because of the threaded tuning pins throughout the entire instrument. In 1900 and thereafter the instrument had actual guitar tuners. This instrument is a beautiful part of history! The zither measures 19 1/2 inches in length at the longest point and 12 inches at the widest point 31 tuning pins Stings appear to be original although I am not an expert. Missing 10 strings Label says Vienna Progress First Prize Franz Schwarzer Instrument does not appear to have separation at glue areas which is common in antique instruments. I do see a faint crack on the fret board from age and that is pictured. The original box is included. The box has separation on the bottom where ... morethe glue held the bottom and top to the frame. As you can see in the photo the inside lining is in poor condition. Case measures approx 21 inches by 13 1/2 inches. Included is the original tuning tool and also a thumb pick. Antique COLUMBIA ZITHER SPECIAL MODEL 3 3/4- Manufactured by PHONOHARP CO. Early 1900's All original with original wooden box. Box does have locks and the key spot(no key) It is in a nice condition considering the age. Has some structural issues on the back. Which doesn't much affect the voice and is easy to repair. I will not touch or repair it, simply because someone at some point already tried to do that and as you can see in the pictures didn't do a nice job with it. However based on its overall condition I can tell that most of its life it was in right hands and if a right person buys it and makes the minor repair in the back or perhaps replaces the back than it will be one of the best ones you can have and be proud of. It has few missing string which are also not going to be installed for the same reason.
