Vintage Pre-War E H Roth Violin, copy of Earl of Wilton Amati
Amazing highly flamed maple back. Sides and neck. Spruce top with an unfortunate attempt at a repair. Its hard to say what us under the cardboard glued over the crack, but as far as I can tell, there is one crack that extends from the treble side f-hole to the bottom edge. There is another crack that extends from the f-hole to the top edge that is covered with tape. On the bass side by the tailpiece appears to be another short crack covered with paper perhaps 6cm long. The back appears to be in very good condition, the neck as well, with some playing wear above the nut on the treble side of the scroll. The rib near the bottom is warped a little. The signature on the label appears to be that of Ernst Heinrich Roth. E H Roth is still in business today in Bubenreuth, and they moved from Markneukirchen in 1953. So, if it's not"pre-war" ... moreit certainly is pre 1953. There is no date on the label. There is a stamp or impression into the wood above the label that says Ernst Heinrich Roth, but it was difficult to get a photo of. As I am not a repairman, I didn't want to get out the exacto knives to see what was under the cardboard and paper, but I suspect that it is not as bad as it looks. Or perhaps the buyer may want to investigate the cost of a new top with E. H. Roth. I'm of the opinion that it should be kept original, even with the cracks. length of back is about 356mm. An antique Violin. Fro m Germany. About 1910. Nicolaus Amati model. L ength of back not including n eck button is 14 3/16 ins. Body w idths are 6 3/8. 4 3/8& 8 1/8 ins. In original condition, will need attention/ restoration and setting up. Some rough edges on sides of lower right top and upper left top. Some warping and issue at the bottom side where the tailpin goes in and will need a new pin. Sound pegs don't completely match and look to have been adjusted. Needs strings. C omes in an old wooden case. Which is a little worse for wear but still very stron g. Also included is an octagonal Bow. 29 1/8 ins, which has no hair. Antique 1800's Nicolaus Amatus Amati Violin Beautiful Woods Playable Project
This auction is for a very well made copy of a Nicolo Amati violin that I am selling for a friend. I was told that this violin was played by a long past cousin around the turn of the last century. The top of this violin is very well grained with a few small areas that could use a touchup. The F holes show no edge damage. And retain their original shape. The back, ribs,and neck are all highly figured maple. The ribs show no problems at the lower edge at the chin rest. The Fingerboard is ebony, as are the tuners, and tailpiece, and nut. The sound post is in position, but may not be after shipping. The violin is also fully blocked. The finish appears to be oil over spirit varnish. The Label reads"Nicolaus Amatus Fecit in Cremona 1681" with the last two digits 81 penciled in. This violin is in well played condition needing some repair ... moreto three of the beaks as can be seen in the scans. There are also some grooves worn on the finger board from long play. The violin needs a good cleaning of a coat of ancient rosin, and a proper set up, as well as re attaching the nut in order to be playable. I am no expert, and don't know how to date this instrument, but there is a pouch from Carl Fischer on 6-8 Fourth Ave N.Y. 1898-99 that contains a number of gut strings, and an interesting example of an Aubert bridge showing a six pointed star above the name. I really wanted to keep this violin for my daughter who plays, but she has a few, and in this economy you can't have them all! THE ROSIN IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS AUCTION. That my daughter wanted. The case is pretty much shot, but might be worth mentioning that at one time it appears to have been covered in leather. Old 4/4 German Violin Copy Of Italian Maker Amati!
An old 4/4 size German violin made on an Amati pattern in the late 19th or early 20th century. The original label reads"Nicolaus Amatus Cremonen Hieronymi Filiae Antonij Nepos Fecit 1677" The last two numbers of the date are handwritten. Overall length of the violin is about 23 1/4" Corpus 14 1/16" Upper bout 6 5/8" Middle bout 4 1/2" Lower bout 8 3/16" Stop 5 1/4. The table is made of two pieces of good quality fine grain spruce. Flamed two piece maple back. Ribs, neck and scroll. Original reddish varnish on a yellow ground. The instrument has survived in quite good condition with only miner signs of use. I don't see any cracks or any evidence of repairs. To me the tone seems even and not to bright or dark. Fiddly kind of tone. Vintage Violin LOWENDALL Manufactured in Berlin Special Copy Amati Luthier
Manufactured in Berlin Special Copy of Nicolaus Amati(L inside of a laurel wreath) This was one of the labels used by Louis Lowendall Co. This violin does not have the extra name signature that some models carry. It measures 14 3/8 inches and is 36.2 cm. The woods used on this violin are beautiful. It has a one-piece back and this same wood was used on the ribs. The peg box and scroll are in good original condition. The pegs are holding in tune. The peg holes look to be in their original or near original condition. The perfling is inlaid on the front and back. There is piece missing on the bottom of the front next to the saddle measuring ¾ of an inch. There are no open seams or cracks that I can see. There is one center crack above the saddle that was repaired a long-time ago and is very strong. It just doesn't look very nice. My ... morephotos exaggerate it because I don't want you to be surprised. I think that touching up the varnish could make it disappear but that's way above my skills. The violin is fully lined and blocked. The bass bar looks like it was carved separately but I can't see it well enough to be sure. The amber varnish is thin and very pretty. It has a glassy finish and doesn't look thick or gloppy. It looks original to me but I'm not sure how French polishing looks close-up. There are two small spots on the back where the varnish looks disturbed– I am not sure whether from heat or rubbing. The varnish around the F holes looks bubbly. If that makes any sense and I've tried to include photos of this. The fingerboard doesn't look new and thick but it seems well-shaped. Also. There is a very thin shim under the fingerboard. I am not sure if there was a neck reset done, it doesn't look like it and the neck is very solid but the varnish is disturbed in that area. The button is complete but has some sort of circular impression on it as though there was a plaque or a wax seal on it. The soundpost is standing up inside but I think it's too long. Nice tight spruce top that is very solid- see photos- there are no cracks or splits anywhere on this violin. A few scratches as shown and missing one string. I seems to have a nice ring to the tone when you pluck the strings or draw the bow accross. A set of new strings and this violin is ready to play. The instrument was sold to me as Circa 1790. And I believe the age to be approximately true. The neck seems to have been lengthened. The peg-box is grafted, and the peg-holes have been bushed. The dimensions are unusual. And exact measurements can be provided upon request. The length of the back is approximately 14 1/4. The ribs are slightly more narrow than those of contemporary violins. I purchased this violin last year from an elderly man in town who used to play in the Austin(TX) Symphony. The violin seems to be in outstanding condition. With no clearly-visible cracks or open seams. It is a fantastic violin with an exceptionally sweet tone, and it projects well. I used it last year in multiple recitals, one televised locally. It was never my primary violin, but is one of my favorites. I showed it to the owner of a small violin shop and he said all the scratches and wear are artificial, it's antiqued. There is a label inside that has been ... morepartially removed(see photo) What remains is illegible to me. The shop owner did point out two repairs to the wings of the F holes. Identical on each side in mirror image. He said some old-time fiddles used to think they could make the violins louder by cutting into the wings, and thought this might have been a repair of that type of damage. I don't know anything more, but the holes have been restored to the original shape, it's hard to see in the photos) He also said the neck graft was part of the antiquing and that they never made a graft curve like what you can see in the photo. As for the sound, this violin compares with instruments I have played in the $10,000+ range, and if you are looking for a'player' at good price, I think this is an incredible opportunity. As for location of origin, I would assume that if the label had said it was from Italy, no one would have tried to remove it. Assume it's German. It has a beautiful one piece tightly quartersawn back. It is delicately made with a golden brown varnish and a yellow ground. i bought this last summer at a estate sale. none of the children could tell me anything about it and i am clueless about violins. it measures approx. 23.50" long by 8.1/8" at it's widestthe label inside reads nicolaus amati fecit cremona an 1776. it looks like a old repair where the neck joins the body[ i took three pictures of it] also it looks lika crack on the base it goes up the front several inches then stops. the back has a little separation and what looks like a tiny plug. there is also a plug by the neck with the letter h on it. the bow is marked glasser and is 29.25" long. i took about 15 pictures. Up for sale is an antique violin with a world of charm. The varnish is a beautiful reddish brown. Although it needs some touching up. It has a grafted scroll. It has peg hole bushings. It has crack repairs. Much of the work was done by John A. Gould and Sons. One of Boston's finest luthier families of the time in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The violin needs a talented luthier to touch up some areas and make it beautiful again. Although the violin plays as it stands. It is a 4/4 size violin. With the back measuring 356mm from the tail to beside the button on the back. There are no sound post cracks. The tuning pegs fit nicely. The violin comes with a beautifully carved bridge with J. A. Gould& Sons stamped into it. There is also a dropped sound post inside. This violin has two labels inside. One is centered on the back. And says ... morethe following: Repaired for Charles E. B. White by Orin Gould of John A. Gould and Sons Boston. MA July 1935 The other label says: Antonius& Hieronymus Fr. Amati Cremonen. Andreae fil. F 16 05(the last two numbers are hand written and I am guessing that it is a zero and a five) This violin has the look of a fine violin. I am guessing it is a European violin. Label inside reads ANTONIO CURATOLI No. 1632. MADE IN ITALY, COPY OF AMATI, 1907. I understand that these were actually made in Germany, even though the label says Italy? In any case, this one is full-size, of highly figured tiger maple with a one-piece back and finely carved f-holes and scroll. CONDITION-The sound-post is intact and there are no cracks. However, the neck has come off and the top and back are beginning to lift off near the end-peg. This instrument will need some repairs, but certainly will be well-worth the effort. Comes in a tired and worn hard-shell case with rosin and bridge. I will combine shipping whenever possible, and normally will ship worldwide within one day of receiving payment. The front has two old repaired cracks. The back has been stripped down to its original wood with no cracks. There is a"D" on the back of the neck(in pics) as well as"Concert Violin and Amati" stamped on the back of the scroll. The lighter faced violin has no name on the inside or out. Has one peg and no tailpiece. It has some separation of the front from the body which can be glued(repaired) easily. It is in good shape. But I don't think it is as great quality as the Amati. This violin is labeled- Joh. Bapt. Schweitzer, fecit at forman, Hieromyui Amati, Pestini 1816- My guess is, it's a copy of an Amati made probably around 1900, same as the case. It could be a 1816, but I wouldn't know how to tell. The violin is in good condition. Only issue I see is a recess around the end pin. You can see it in the pictures, it's not much. No other cracks I can see. The curly maple is very nice! I believe this is a good one. Sold as you see it, as is.

Old Antique Amati 4/4 Violin, Older Restoration, Ready to Play, Exc. Condition
For your consideration I offer this full size German violin. With a banner or flag shaped label that reads: AMATI There is a seal on the left end of the label. Which reads on the left schutzmarke and on the right trade mark and at the bottom Germany. It is well made. Fully lined with 4 corner blocks, ebony fingerboard and fittings, nice delicately symmetrical scroll, and not heavy meaning well graduated plates. The modeling is that of Nicolo Amati, which has a higher arching than a Stradivari, for example. Tonally the violin is in the middle between bright and sweet. Leaning towards the sweet side. It has a clear tone, quick responce, with good of volume and projection. It has been very well taken care of in it's life. With only minor signs of use. It has a repaired saddle crack on the left, under the chinrest. Also under the chinrest ... moreis a short piece of miss matched purfling, presumably replacing a piece that came out. Both of these repairs are visible in the one picture that shows the lower part of the top without the chinrest. Other than that, there are no other repairs noted, no open cracks, and no seam separations. The violin is sound, and ready to play. Below are lots of pictures of the violin for you to see. Here's a old or antique violin with case and accessory pieces we received recently with some estate items. This one is probably from the late 1800's to the 1920's. It is in an old fabric covered wood case with a Lifton tag on the inside. The case is good with working latches. Etc. slight signs of age, could use a little light cleaning on the inside. The violin has a paper tag on the inside of the body indicating Made in Germany and as is often the case the tag indicates the makers choice of style for modeling the violin. This one indicates it is styled as a copy of a Nicholas Amati violin. As the pictures show the violin has had the neck separate from the body. The separation seems to be at the glue point. The body of the violin seems to be intact without crack issues, etc. Slight signs of wear and age but decent overall. There ... moreis a spare neck in the case that was with this and also a spare chin piece with this as shown in the pictures. The bow is with the violin and appears to be in good condition thought the finish has signs of use and age. The body of the violin about 13.5 inches long by about 7.5 inches wide if that helps identify the size. It would be about 22 inches long with the neck in place. It looks like the surface piece of the both the necks or what one might call the fretboard has been removed from both so someone will need to add the veneer surface piece when the neck is re-installed. The bow string, horsehair or whatever this is properly called looks pretty thinned out. The case is about 28.5 inches long. That's about it. The pictures should be helpful to those having interest. This violin is from an estate collection. Untouched for many many years. It is labeled"No. 3441 William Chadwick Copy of Amati 1915" with"WRC" cipher logo, and stamed"Chadwick Violin" on the scroll(serial# and dated by hand) It measures 23 3/8" long overall, with 8 1/8" x 14 3/16" long back(not including button) It features beautiful one piece flamed grain wood back, with rick dark varnish. The scroll is finely hand carved, and the purfling is nicely inlayed. Ebony finger board. It displays beautifully, and likely will be a fine player. Case indluded. No bow. Condition: As-found/ not played in many years. Old/ uncleaned varnish. Sound post is in place. Needs strings. We see no signs of repairs. Here we have an antique Violin which was given to my Aunt as a child in the 1920's. I don't know if it's full size. 3/4 size, or what. It's in need of repair but the interesting thing is the sticker inside reads" Amati fecit Anno 1653" I know Amati and Stradivarius are the most sought after Violins. Could this be a real Amati? Old Antique Vintage Fullsize Violin With Amati Label over 200 Years Old
I bought this fullsize old violin about 4 months from a shop down in the Nashville area.It had been shown to several experts in that area that for the most part agree that it was made in Austria about 1775 by an expert craftsman. The violin was made on a Amati pattern which could explain the Amati label. The label reads Antonius Amati Cremona 1570. This it a very thick violin with high arching on both the top and back plates which I feel gives the violin a somewhat haunting tone.The one-piece back is beautiful and the neck and pegbox have extra nice flaming. I see a few well repaired cracks on the front but nothing near the basebar or soundpost areas. I payed a small fortune for this violin and therefore the opening bid is 350.00 which is about one third of what it cost me on ebay. there will be no refunds and no returns so please ask questions ... morebefore you bid. The experts tell me that it was made in Austria nearly 250 years ago. There is a Antonius Amati Label in it that I was Told to ignore. The violin has a very thick or fat body and a beautiful one-piece back with good flames on the neck and scroll as well. The top plate is ultra-fine grained spruce. The violin was professionally restored not long ago and is ready to go. The tone is what you would expect from an expertly crafted violin made about 250 years ago. Because of the current economic climate I am now looking at $1000 for this especially sweet-toned full bodied relic which is between 90 and 125 years old. Incredible to many I'm finding out. Stradivari was a student of Amati( Amati d.1578) This is between 90 and 125 years old. Made by Julius of the legendary Heberlein family of luthiers from Germany. As a reproduction its construction is mostly unrivaled. This was constructed as close to the quality of an actual Amati as an exceptionally faithful reproduction can be. It has been said that Stradivari inscribed: made by an apprentice of Andrea Amati inside his first violin. He was in fact a student of Andrea Amati over 400 years ago. Even as a a 100 year old copy this is quite a fortunate lineage to choose. It features an outstanding one-piece back. Nice continuity. Not like a mismatched ... moresplit and glued back. Beautiful Violin - Late 19th Century German Made Amati Copy Violin
Hello, I am selling a Beautiful Violin- German Made. Nicolo Amati Copy Cica 1890- 4/4 size. This Violin is newly refurbished and ready to play. See video demo below. The violin was recently refurbished: 1 bushed peghole- reglued seams- new sound post- 2 new fine tuners- new tail piece gut- new strings The violin has no cracks. It appears to have a small very light scratch near the E string fine tuner. There is a light colored line just below the right side F-hole that is in the finish and Not a scratch. There is a light colored area on the back on the bottom right that is in the finish but is Not damage. The violin has been refinished- has a brushed wood grain. The violin includes: a low budget violin case- 2 violin bows that I was told may Not be worth refurbishing/rehairing.
