Unusual Antique redware Eleven-Hole Ocarina Black and Gold Coloring
Antique Redware Black& Gold 11-Hole Ocarina Made in Austria? For your Redware or Musical Instrument Collection Details Description: Very interesting and unusual piece of glazed redware. Here is an Ocarina. An ancient flute-like wind instrument. Variations do exist, but a typical ocarina is an enclosed space with four to twelve finger holes and a mouthpiece that projects from the body. This particular Ocarina has 11-holes and the mouth piece does project from the body. The piece is colored in black and the finger holes are numbered and lettered in gold coloring. The piece is also decorated with gold coloring at the two ends. The Ocarina is also stamped with the letter"G" and the number"9" near where the mouth piece meets the body of the instrument. The piece does give a beautiful sound when you blow into the mouth piece ... moreopening and you can change the tone by covering various finger opening. Very interesting. There are two ovals on the body of the Ocarina. Both are colored in gold, one has the name of the maker and the words Mad in and a word we believe maybe saying Austria, but we are truly unable to ascertain it. The other oval is blank and looks like two intersecting circles. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: Uncertain. Possibly early 1900s or earlier. Origin: Uncertain but most likely somewhere in Europe. Possibly Austria. Size: ~7" long. And ~4" high including the mouth piece. The piece weighs over 10 1/2 ounces. Maker: Unknown Marks: Has what appears to be a makers mark indicating who the maker is and where the piece is made within a gold colored oval. However. We are unable to decipher the words or letters. The piece also has the letter G and the number 9 stamped into it. FIEHN Vienna Made in Austria" and the other has the 1879 Sydney Expo Logo and reads"Sydney Exhibition" and a couple other things which I cant make out. It's also punched"A 7" with a symbol. As you can see it has lots of wear to the paint. You can see most of the numbers for each hole. So have rubbed off. Some dings. It was purchased from a seller of Americana(Indian) pieces dating back over 100 years. Antique H. Fiehn Ocarina This auction is for an extremely rare. Antique, 1800's H. Fiehn ocarina. An ocarina(sometimes called a sweet potato) is a clay fipple flute. H. Fiehn or Heinrich Fiehn. d 1941) originally a German wagon maker, was a manufacturer of ocarinas based in Austria. He had an exposition in 1879 with his popular ocarinas which were made in Vienna, Austria. His popularity was gained, however, in the United States where the majority of his ocarinas were sold. Today, they are an extremely good collector's find The photos show(albeit not very well) the royal crest and the makers stamp. This auction is for a vintage"sweet potato" ocarina clay flute which was made by H. Fiehn. Based on an embossing in the clay. I believe it was made for the 1879 Sydney International Exhibition. This wonderful vintage wind intrument measures about 7" long. It has two separate seals embossed into the clay pottery- one reads"H. Fiehn(Vierra? Made in Germany" and the other reads"Sydney Exhibition 1879" Also, there is the letter C above a number 6 engraved into the flute where air is blown into it. There are some other marks which are not clear enough to read. For its age the red and gold paint looks amazing and there are no chips cracks or repairs! I only ship to the United States. Antique Black Ewa Ocarina Sweet Potato Musical Instrument Vienna, Austria
Really unusual looking"ewa" musical instrument. Reads: Vienna Made In Austria. Above that is a word that looks like"Filha" But is very faded. It kind of resembles a Good Year blimp. 8 holes are on one side, and 3 on the other. Some of the paint is faded, but it is still a really beautiful piece. It appears to be hand carved clay. I have no idea how to play it, but it appears to be in good condition with no cracks, the holes look clean and you can see through to the other holes on the other side. Will be shipped with bubble wrap.

Fiehn ocarinas were shown at the 1879 Exposition in Sydney& grew in popularity after that. The tips of the ocarina are gold-painted flowers. This ocarina has 2 gold seals impressed on the underside which are VERY difficult to decipher: The first appears to be the double circle emblem of the 1879 Exposition in Sydney(not readable) The other is the oval maker’s mark: H. FIEHN FAMOUS MADE IN AUSTRIA There is also a paper sticker/seal(partially gone) which I am unable to read. Impressed in the side is“D 12" CONDITION: The gold is worn- this includes the 2 gold seals as well as the gold-painted flower tips(ends of the ocarina) There are also areas/streaks(particularly ... moreon the top) where the black finish is damaged& the clay shows through. FIEHN OCARINA-C1- Sydney Exposition Seal This ocarina is blue with gold tips and has 2 gold seals impressed(on the side& underside) which are VERY difficult to decipher: The first appears to be the double circle emblem of the Sydney Exhibition. The other is the oval maker’s mark(on the underside) H. FIEHN VIENNA MADE IN AUSTRIA Impressed in the side is“C 1" The finger hole numbers are almost completely worn off- only a few faint marks are visible. It measures 3-5/8" x 2" NO RETURNS. Has good clear maker's stamp and another stamp. As seen in my pictures. 12 finger hole style-9 holes on top. 3 on bottom. Has metal slide tuner-rare in ocarinas. It works quite well! Most likely late 1800s craftsmanship. In beautiful condition-a must have for any wind instrument aficianado! Measures approx 7 inches.

It has the golden painted oblong impression H Fiehn Made in Austria signature seal as well as the Sydney International Exhibition double circle impression seal with 1879 date. It is very faint but can be partially read in the close ups below- click through twice to see extreme close ups of all photos below. Condition is good. Antique with evidence of normal wear. The black paint has peeled and the red clay is exposed underneath. There ... moreare faint golden painted letters and numbers over and below the holes. There are 3 upper holes, 4 below, 2 on the other side. There is also 1 at the bottom of the handle- 10 holes total. No chips or cracks except maybe on the bottom opening- the hole looks like it has flaked just a little around the edge. Only other item to mention is the actual colors are fainter over all than my camera shows. I have this old antique clay ocarina. Its marked C1 and has a label impressed in the clay painted with gold paint see pics. I cant make out most of the writing but it says Vienna It has a chip on the nose but no air can get out just surface chip has some paint chips but is in pretty good shape for its age pretty sure its called a 10 hole has 12 holes but one is to blow through and the other is for the sound about 4 in long any questions please ask and thanks for looking at Bigpopy1.
