I believe its a full size 4/4 but I'm not sure it measures 23 1/2" long and 8 1/4" wide at widest point. This violin has been in a family for 5 generations and believed to be from the 1700's. The inside is marked Antonius Stradivarius Cremona Germany faciebat Anno 1720 and has a A/S logo. It is made of a beautiful tiger stripe maple wood. It has a signed bridge but I cant make out exactly what it says it looks like Okeshen or Qkeshen possible that the k is an r. Absolutely beautiful sound the tuners seem to work fine some light age wear but overall in good condition for its age. In a GSB original coffin case with original paper it has some age wear shown in pics. It also comes with a nice bow in also good vintage condition. I am not an expert so please take a look at the pics and feel free to ask questions. With highly polished varnish finish(see images) The purfling is amazingly precisely inlayed, and scroll as well as f-holes are finely hand carved, showing crisp detailed workmanship. antique French 4/4 violin HENRY THOUVENEL excl playing cond no res This is a fantastic 19th century French violin with fantastic sound suitable for advanced and professional player. The stamp inside the violin says: THOUVENEL HENRY and TH in a circle. The back of the violin is made of one piece of super attractive tiger maple. And has no repairs or cracks. There iS A STamp near the button that says: POND& CO. ALBANY. I guess from the dealer in US who sold it. The sides and the scroll have the matching wood and except a dent. Or scratch from the old case have no damage( see the pic. The fingerboard has a piece of wood like a shim under it. I guess to make it higher. The top has some repairs; a long repair going through half of the violin under the bridge. I looked inside and can see a patch under the bridge. there are 2 other minor repairs( ... moreyou can see all in the pictures. And please ask for more pictures if you wish) The varnish has an orange yellow color with nice patina and all original with some shadings in the middle because of the repair. All repairs are strong and the seams tight. Needs new strings and may be a new bridge. Althoughthe old bridge works. The length of the body is 14 inches. No case. No bow.

The sound quality not avaialble from new isntruments. It is a very flat model. Local luthier claim it is very very old as the rim/edge of wood has got rotten due to age. The varnish is yellowish brown. Body length 352-352mm. Numerous stable repairs well done. No current open cracks. The sound characteres are very rich warm and loud. The second violin seems to be german/austrian origin. Around 100 years old, 357mm length, golden and reddish varnish. with a catalogue number engraved near the back button. This is a lovely old 4/4 violin. The label inside reads: Fait dans l'Atelier de P. BLANCHARD Lyon 1898(last two numbers are in writting) This is a full sized violin. It measures: 586 x 360 x 164 x 111 x 204 mm. REPAIRS: long repaired crack going from apr. middle of the right"F" hole to the edge- 5 inch long repaired saddle hair line- under the tail piece. 1.5 inch long repaired hair line on the left lower bout. repaired lower left rib at the edge/ corner. I DO NOT SEE OTHER ISSUES WITH THIS VIOLIN. And all the past repairs are holding. I looked to check things inside. And all is fine: All the linings are in place; all corner blocks are there; the bass bar is firmly attached and the sound post is in place. There are some minor dings. Scratches, and scuffin all over, and some varnish ware. THIS VIOLIN IS CLEARLY SHOWN IN DETAIL ... moreON THE PICTURES- NO SURPRISES. Violin is setup. And it is in playing condition. The round pernambuco stick is made of beautifull wood of dense and high quality and has a light brown color. No repairs but has a knot located about 10 inches from the buttom. That is going through about half of the stick and moves( please see the pictures) Although it doesn't change the bow at all when it is tightened, in my opinion needs attention. The stick is straight and very strong. The ivory tip has lost its very end. But has no cracks and I think is original. The frog is made of ebony and German silver. Has NO cracks or repairs but you can see the intensive use and the buttom slide is unglued. All Mother Of Pearl parts are there and have great colors. It has no grip. With a back length of 36cm" The instrument is constructed with one-piece front and back tables, with a lovely choice of grained wood. The same superbly flamed wood being used for the ribs and neck. Vintage French Antique 1900s Violin Garini JTL or Derazey shop - Warm Sweet Tone
I am delighted to offer this easy-to-play. Warm-toned, resonant Michel-Ange Garini violin, likely crafted in the JTL(Jerome Thibouville-Lamy) workshop in France circa 1900. Most of the violins bearing this label were made as one of the better models in the JTL workshop near Vosges, France, in the Mirecourt region. However, further research revealed that a few examples were made by Justin Amedee Derazey or his factory. From the same region. This is the fifth JTL I have had the great pleasure to own and play, and, they are known for their consistently high-quality tone, deep on the lower strings, and full and sweet and clear in the higher register. This one plays very well, and feels good in the hand, with excellent dynamics and quick response. According to one of the well-known ebay sellers and a French violin expert, The JTLs in general are ... moreknown for reliability of tone, offering playing qualities which simply can't be matched by modern trade violins. They were produced in a factory and generally hand-finished to a high standard, and are generally perceived to be very competent instruments. One characteristic feature is the dark reddish varnish that most of them display, along with the desirable one-piece back, generally reserved for JTL’s better instruments. T his one has just been professionally restored and set-up. The Bausch bridge has been fitted to the top and a new soundpost cut and positioned to maximize the instrument's tonal quality. Ebony fingerboard. Chin-rest, and tailpiece. The tuners turn and hold well, and it has 4 fine tuners for quick tuning. Like many other high-quality JTL violins, it has the one-piece back and sides constructed of beautifully flamed maple, and its condition is excellent- no cracks, splits, or repairs. FINE OLD ANTIQUE FRENCH MIRECOURT VIOLIN AFTER GASPARD DUIFFOPRUGAR CIRCA 1890!
Fine antique french violin made circa 1880/1900 in Mirecourt. Gaspard Duiffoprugar model. This astonishing violin was made in Mirecourt in late 19th century. Possibly in the Thibouville-Lamy workshops. It was made after the celebrated"Gaspard Duiffoprugard" model, a maker who probably never existed. Many of the best french 19th century makers used to make this model, like Vuillaume or Derazey. This one has been nicely made in this french tradition, with the characteristics of this model: the engraved ribs, the decorations of the corners, the castle inlaid at the lower end of the back, and the beautiful old man's head as a scroll. The woods have been carefully chosen, with a spruce of straight grain for the front, and two pieces of a flamed maple of horizontal curl for the back. The varnish, of a brown-orange colour on a golden ... moreground, is original. The carving of the head is a wonderful work, that we have tried to show in pictures. The violin is in a very good condition. With a little soundpost patch on front, a few other cleated cracks on front, and a little cleated repair at center right of the back. All these repairs have been carefully done and will not be of any trouble. The sound of this violin is extremely nice. A deep and mature french sound, warm, with a good projection, and baroque accents. A fine concert instrument which will be a great addition to the collection of a concert player, a teacher, or a good student. The violin comes with a certificate delivered by our workshop, including a $2700 valuation. Instruments of this kind are often well over 360mm. But this one isn't! Fine antique french master violin made by Laurent Bourlier in Mirecourt circa 1820. French violin of quality made in Mirecourt circa 1820 by Laurent Bourlier. This maker was definitely talented. To have produced such a great-looking instrument! The choice of woods is wonderful, with the top made of two parts of fine spruce of a regular grain widening to the edges, the back made of one piece of a somptuous maple with fine curl slightly ascending from right to left. The head and the f holes are very elegant. And show a strong early french character. Very delicate purfling, made of three fine ebony inlays on top and back, which is quite rare and very difficult to do at this level of precision! The varnish is stunning, of a golden colour, very transparent, and is entirely intact, which is quite rare for such instruments. This violin is absolutely ... moreoriginal in all parts. The head, neck, even the bass bar are entirely original to the instrument. The condition of is very good, with several repairs to the table above and under f holes(see pictures) which have been perfectly made ans are stable. But none to soundpost or bass bar. The back is in perfect condition, without repair. Some wear to the edges. The violin has been entirely revised and set-up in our workshop, and is in an excellent playing condition. Old late 19th century french violin for restoration& set-up. This violin is a french work circa late 19th century(1880/1900) Proposed for restoration with an old original french case and a bow. BWe do not see any noticeable crack on the instrument(just 2 of a few millimeters on the edges at the left and right of the button on upper back) The fingerboard is badly glued and has to be changed. The upper and lower nuts are missing, a few unglued ribs, one worm hole at the haed and another one on the back(see pictures) and the set-up has to beentirely done, but the structural condition of the instrument is really good for its age and the work not excessive. Very Nice Antique 4/4 Violin-No Label-Unmarked-19th Century French Mirecourt
14" body. Measures@ 22 3/4" x 8 1/8" widest body point. Weighs 14.16 ounces. Ebony fingerboard. Tailpiece and chinrest. Double-bound top and back. 2 piece top. 3 piece matched. Flame back. Nice striping on the sides. Neck, and headstock as well. There are 2 plugged holes from previous tuning pegs. Visible on the sides of the headstock; one on each side. There are 2 very minor cracks. At the treble-side f-hole. They measure 3/4" 3/16" Very minor and not deep or wide. One point of interest possibly worth mentioning; there is a pronounced scoop on both the top and back where they meet the sides. Just something that stood out to me. I don't handle a lot of violins. But I do look them over when I acquire one. I can't say I've noticed this much of a slope. Or carving near an edge before. Probably very common. ... moreHowever I feel it is worth mentioning. Nicely-aged. Mellow reddish/brown patina. I routinely black-light vintage guitars before I buy them as part of my inspection process. I used the same procedure on this violin. I didn't observe any overspray. Or see any signs of repair to the aforementioned f-hole cracks. I believe the varnish to be original and untouched. The case seems to be consistent with the age of the violin. Possibly original case? The outside leather has a good amount of wear to it. The handle is intact. As well as the hinges, lock, and metal feet. There is a 2" section of leather banding that is missing. Near the handle hook, on the side. It reveals a metal banding that wraps around the case. The green velvet interior is altogether good. With normal, moderate wear. The inside pocket is sturdy. And contains an old canvas chin-rest, tuning peg, and some partially-used Royal brand D-9 rosin. The case is sturdy. And structurally sound. Update: Upon closer inspection I realized there are a few seam issues with the violin. There is a little wear spot where the wood piece that holds up the strings s ets and some very light scratches from use. There is a ti ny loose wire where the inlay is on the bottom p art that ho l ds the strings. There is a label on the inside with what I think is the makers name and some other words. Just acquired out of a Midwest estate we are able to offer this fine quality ~ 1920's era. ~ VUILLAUME PARIS FRENCH MODEL 4/4 VIOLIN ~. The paper label inside reads: COPY OF VUILLAUME A PARIS RUE CROIX DES PETITE CAMP 46 MADE IN GERMANY. It is constructed of beautiful old growth wood, and does not have any cracks or repairs. It does have a little section that is bowed out on the side near the bottom- see picture# 8. It is not cracked but will probably need to be placed back along the edge. The violin measures 23 1/8 inches long with a 14 1/8 inch back. There is some minor expected wear from age and use, but all in all this antique violin was very well cared for. It will need to be professionally set up, as well as new strings. The sound post is present and in place. This violin is a French instrument. The back. Ribs, and scroll all have beautiful flaming. The varnish is reddish brown. The varnish on the top has flaked off in a few places and has cracked. There is also cracking on a small area on the back. The violin has a two-piece back and ebony fittings except for a rosewood button and pegs. The pegs have oval German silver pins. The oval is missing on the D string. The instrument is in very good condition and has a great tone. The label reads Copie de Antonius Stradivarius Cremonenfis Faciebat Anno 1721. Through the right f-hole is a France label and a label that reads 149 inverted. The violin is circa 1912 to 1917. This violin has had an expert appraisal by a Luthier for $3200. A Very Old Antique Vintage Silver Mounted Violin Bow French?
Antique Violin Bow A very nice silver mounted violin bow likely from mid to late 19th Century. Maybe french? The pernambuco stick is of a dark red/brown color. The bow is straight and has a good camber. It has a very nice interesting head. Tourte or french like? The frog is made of ebony. It is silver mounted with pearl eyes and slide. The adjuster is made of ebony with two silver rings and a pearl eye. The wrapping is fine silver with a lizard leather grip. There is some wear to the stick by the frog from probably many years of playing. But it is in good condition. This is a very old bow and it is normal for it to show some use wear. This bow looks very promising and in my opinion it should be a fine playing bow after a rehair. The weight of the bow is 53g(without hair) and the total length is 74.1 cm.

Many more excellent violins on martinswanviolins.com! This is a n early JTL violin bearing its original label"L.E.J.T. L' I ncomparable" Dated 1 89 1. It's a very attracti ve instrument with a lightly figured one-piece back. A very good finely grained spruce top, and a nice precise scroll. Overall the condition is pretty good. And the original varnish is very well preserved. There's s ome minor worm damage to the bottom rib. There's a chip to the upper left table corner. And the pegbox has been all but carved open on the treble side. Y ou can see these issues in the photos. But none of them are of any consequence for the sound or the value of the instrument. The violin is well set up. Ready to play, and the action is correct. The pegs are new. Otherwise the fittings look ori ginal; strings are new Warchal Karneol(in ... moremy opinion the best sounding strings on the market) length of back 35. 7 cm. Total length 5 8.8 cm. Laberte and JTL violins account for more than 50% of our sales- I know them well. And I'm a big fan. It's quite rare to see a JTL of this vintage- most are from 1910 to 1930. Lovely Antique French Violin.New set-up ready to play.
This is a lovely Antique Full size violin. In my opinion and that of a wizened Luthier friend who's looked at it probably French 1890's from the workshop of Jerome Thibouville Lamy. It is set-up. Checked and ready to play. I have set this up with new Thomastik Dominant strings. New ebony tailpiece,new Teka style chin rest and bow. This is ideal for a student taking grade exams. Fine to grade 8 and orchestral, it is of course fine for other players. For me this is a no brainer.I don't know any violin tutor who wouldn't rather see a student with a well set up antique violin rather than a new Chinese model and in my opinion for tone this knocks the spots off the top of the range Stentor priced at £600, which in 120 years still won't sound as good. It comes with/fitted with- Good used condition sturdy case.Lockable,rather ... morebright interior but you get used to it. New Dominant strings. New shoulder rest. New chin rest. Well fitting ebony pegs which hold and adjust easily. New endpin. Nice new bow with Ebony frog.Mongolian horse hair,Parisian eye mop inlays. New ebony tailpiece with fine tuner on the e string(Dominant strings are easy to tune and the pegs adjust easily but I can change this tailpiece to an Alloy with fine tuners on each string if you wish) New Tourte Mute. Hidersine rosin and a duster as it is advisable to wipe your violin after use to remove surplus rosin and keep the varnish in good condition. I came across several antique string instruments from a recent estate of a local musician. I am not an expert on string musical instruments and will describe them as good as I can. No markings anywhere but is of high quality. The bow is made from tubular pernambuco round wood. Ebony frog, mother of pearl and metal and leather wrapped. The bow is straight and strong. No cracks, no chips and no repairs. In excellent original condition. Horsehair hank is not there and will need to be replaced. Measures approx. 29" long. French made Antique violin c. 1900 4/4 Excellent sound Here is an unlabeled French made violin from the early 20th century perhaps 1900-1910. The violin is a 4/4 size. The top is made of moderately grained spruce. There has been a tip repair on the the treble lower corner. There is an old saddle crack about 3/4 of an inch long. Hasn't moved in the 4 years i have owned this violin. Other than these, and handling wear, the top is in great condition. The back sides and neck are made of curly maple with light figuring. The fingerboard, nut, button, and tuning pegs are ebony. The tailpiece is metal with integral fine tuners for all four strings. There is a plastic chinrest. There is no other damage to this violin. You will not find the same from them today. That I will sell in another listing Because I don't have the talent to do the repairs. It is 14 inches long. Not including the neck, I believe that makes it a full size violin. The back is one piece curly maple and beautifully carved with an angel flying over the top of a man playing the cello. Rare and hard to find another one like it for sale in any condition? The fingerboard and tail piece look to be ebony. Comes with a old wooden case that has a great inlay and some vernier loss. Also comes with 2 bows that need to be restrung as shown with what looks like silver. Ebony and inlaid mother of pearl. One of them marked Germany. COMMENTS: You will not find another copy of the first edition for sale on the Internet! A search of WorldCat found a copy in the holdings of the British Library only. I found no auction records going back decades. This copy is in investment quality condition. Hubert Le Blanc was a French viol player. Doctor of law and abbé. Strongly regretting that viol playing was falling out of fashion, he wrote the treatise Défense de la basse de viole contre les enterprises du violon et les prétentions du violoncelle, which was published in Amsterdam by Pierre Mortier in 1740. Those who have written about him are unanimous in considering him an eccentric: his German translator(Erhard, 1951) called him"a somewhat sarcastic old gentleman" his English translator(Jackson, 1973) said he had a"colorful and eccentric personality" his only biographer(Fétis, 1863) tells us that when he learned that his treatise was to be published in Amsterdam, he was so transported with joy that he set off immediately(presumably from Paris) attired as he was when he received the news, in bathrobe, slippers, and nightcap. This violin is one of the"El Maestro" model which was made in the JTL workshops. This is an early work. With very interesting woods and in good condition. The action seems low, but the bridge may need to be replaced because I do not know enough about violins to be sure. I WILL BE HONEST- I AM NOT AN EXPERT! I also cannot be sure of how true the neck/ body is. Keep in mind- this violin is well over 100 YEARS OLD! Buy this violin as-is. Another note is that the bridge post seems to be on an angle. The back is made of one piece of a very pretty flamed maple. And the workmanship ... moreis really good, with a good ebony purfling, a very nice red-brown varnish, a nicely carved head, a lot better than the comon ugly works of their first models that you can easily find on the internet. The condition is really excellent for c.1880, although a little girl named"amber" seems to have carved her name in the top, probably in the early 1900's because I doubt a little girl would be allowed to abuse such a violin post WWII. There are some random checks in the finish, but this is to be excpected with a violin that is 130+ years old! But. The best is its sound, which is really gorgeous, powerful, with a lot of timbre, clear and projective. An incredible voice for the price. It blows my mind to think that violins can actually sound better than this one. Installed is a fresh Thomastik Dominant strings set. Bridge and chinrest are new, but tailpiece, soundpost, pegs, endpin and are of the nicest vintage quality and make of the finest ebony and rosewoods available in my shop. It has been viewed by several experts here in the south and they have all had the same unquestionable conclusion. I will be glad to supply the experts contact information if requested. They are established business men who deal in high end violins. This instrument is in amazing shape. And has had very few repairs. The nut was a bit oversized and caused two minimal separations at its joint position. They were repaired flawlessly by a professional certified luthier in the 1950’s and have not moved. The violin is fitted with dark rosewood fittings, and a Despiau bridge fit to perfection. Parchment installed to accommodate strings. Sound post is most likely original. Action could be brought down a bit if desired, but is comfortable as ... moreis. Sound is very complete and dripping wet with tone& sustain. Tone quality is rich and focused. And can easily overpower any other instrument in the room. Pretty uncommon to find a violin with succulent tone AND massive volume. The violin is built very well. And arches were obviously carved by a master. The violin itself is extremely lite. Giving a very open and resonating camber. Case included is a NEW $225 case from Howard Core. And is VERY heavy duty. The bow was purchased from Howard Core also, and is very good quality pernambuco. It is octagonal in shape, fully lined, with bone tip. Bow wholesales for $475. The handle is missing and a small area of the lids outer rim has some chipped wood, but this does not affect the ability of the case to close. A FINE OLD ANTIQUE FRENCH 18TH CENTURY VIOLIN MADE BY J.B. LEMARQUIS CIRCA 1770.
A fine antique french late 18th century violin of the french school made circa 1770. A rare and beautiful 18th century violin of the french school. Made in Mirecourt circa 1770 by Jean-Baptiste Lemarquis. Lemarquis was the inventor of the"Marquis de l'air d'oiseaux" model, which has been purchased after his death by Charles Claudot in the first part of 19th century, and then later by the big workshops(Thibouville-Lamy and Laberte) which made it a very popular brand. Of course the later factory ones don't have anything to do in quality with this early example, made by a single maker in the style of the late 18th century Mirecourt work, with a nice choice of woods, especially for the back. The table is made of two parts of spruce, and shows straight irregular grain lines. The spectacular back is made of two pieces of nicely ... moreflamed maple, the curl ascending from the center joint. The ribs, neck and head are of the same wood. The varnish, characteristic of the maker, is brown on a yellow ground. The appelation for this kind of varnish in french is"à moustaches" The scroll is elegant, very"18th century french" The violin is in a good overall condition. With a long crack in the bassbar region, stopping near the middle left of the tailpiece, but continuing with another one down to the chinrest. This crack has been glued a long time ago, but has not been patched. It is stable but would benefit from a better restoration. Otherwise, the condition is very good, with minor repair at the lower right rib, a few worm holes filled on neck and head, and a few other repairs at the head which would not require attention. The fingerboard has been changed for a new one. The neck, button, and head are original to the instrument. On the upper back under the button can be found the original fire brand of the maker. FINE OLD ANTIQUE FRENCH VIOLIN, DERAZEY SCHOOL CIRCA 1880, FOR RESTORATION.
A fine antique french late 19th century french violin made circa 1880. School of Derazey, sold for restoration. This violin of quality has been made in Paris by C. Mancenol. And is proposed for restoration and set-up. This is a very fine french master instrument, with a nice choice of woods, and an exquisite workmanship. The top is made of one piece of spruce, and shows very regular and straight grain lines. The back is made of one piece of flamed maple of horizontal curl. The varnish, of a deep and rich red-brown colour, is entirely original. The f holes, the edges and purfling are very well made in the best french tradition, very regular. The head is a pure beauty, remembering strongly with the entire instrument some master works of the time, such as Jules Grandjon or Justin Derazey. The violin bears on the inside back the label of"C. ... moreMancenol à Paris n° 295" I don't have any info on Mancenol, but he was a skilfull maker judging by this violin. The violin has a 6 cm soundpost crack on back. Which needs to be taken care of, but otherwise is in a very good condition, with just a 2 cm crack under the upper part of the right f hole(see picture) and the top nut missing. Once properly restored and set-up, this violin will worth a few thousands dollars, and sound wonderful: it definitely deserves a nice restoration! Dimensions are the following: Body length: 363 mm. Upper bouts: 171 mm Middle bouts: 115 mm. Lower bouts: 210 mm. The violin will be shipped in an old protective case. Fully insured shipping to US for $79 and to EC for $50. Happy bidding!

The nut was a bit oversized and caused two minimal separations at its joint position. They were repaired flawlessly by a professional certified luthier in the 1950’s and have not moved. The violin is fitted with dark rosewood fittings, and a Despiau bridge fit to perfection. Parchment installed to accommodate strings. Sound post is most likely original. Action could be brought ... moredown a bit if desired, but is comfortable as is. Sound is very complete and dripping wet with tone& sustain. Tone quality is rich and focused. And can easily overpower any other instrument in the room. Pretty uncommon to find a violin with succulent tone AND massive volume. The violin is built very well. Sound is bright, smooth and all strings sound even.It is very easy to take any sound. There is much pleasure to play this Violin. There are no any cracks. Seams, dents. The masterpiece was stored safely. Here is nice pernambukko bow.Rosin and ebony mute along with the Violin. Also the item will be sent in antique vintage case,showed in pictures.
