But the type& quality of the workmanship& materials used helps the horn to speak for itself. I cannot verify if it a true military bugle or not, but I’ve seen other examples listed as such. This bugle has a hand-forged rim of copper around the large end. The mouthpiece is bronze(or copper. But looks bronze- hard for me to tell) with markings on it I cannot decipher(could be a makers mark) At the bottom of the mouthpiece is a rim of iron(looks like iron and is heavy and hard) Below the rim of the mouthpiece is a separate ring of copper– this piece moves about 1/8” Measurements are approximately– 16 ½” end to end straight across. Large end is 3 ½”x 4” slightly oval) ... moremouthpiece has a diameter of 11/8” copper rim around large end is 3/8” wide and 1/16” thick. Condition– I am no pro and cannot grade this horn. With that said I found; one 3/16” crack on the horn below the mouthpiece, one3/16”x1 ¼” chip out of the horn under the copper rim(large end) lacquer-type finish has rubbed off in areas of handling/use. Makers Mark– none I could decipher– see pictures of the mouthpiece. This is one of many quality items from the same estate.This estate contained many items verified(some even documented) from the late1800’s thru the late 1930’s– some earlier. Some later, but predominantly within this time frame. I am not an expert and do not know the age of this wonderful piece. My best guess, judging by the workmanship and the materials used, would be no later than 1920, but could as early as the 1870’s. Please take a good look and judge for yourself prior to bidding. We think it was probably Military because it came from a estate sale that had a lot of Military items. It has a lot of oxidation on the brass but I thought it better not to clean it very much. He played all horn instruments this on he called"The 35" I believe it is from 1935 before he went into WW2 I have seen pics of him with this horn in his ww2 military uniform(Pacific campaign) I don't know when he got it. From where but he would bring it to the American Legion along with his trumpet and french horn. I Have no idea how old this horn is as there is no serial number. This is a great collector piece for wall hanging or display. The marking on the horn is GR BAND INST CO. GRAND RAPIDS. MICH. The horn measures 9-1/4 inches long with mouth piece. The Bell is 3-1/2 inches in diameter. The mouthpiece is chain linked to the horn. There are a few dings but still sounds great as any bugle should. This item is being sold as represented here. I hope my pictures accurately portray it. This auction is for an original Trench Bugle from WWI. It is in excellent condition for its age. The mouthpiece is intact but is not adjustable anymore. It has a couple of minor dents(see photos) and oxidation but it still plays. This is the real deal. This was one of the most effective communication devices during WWI for soldiers in the trenches.
