RARE 1920s Banjolin in Mint Condition (Ukelin/ Bowed Psaltery/ Zither)
1920s Banjolin. The banjolin is a very. Very rare instrument, simlar to that of a Ukelin(a bowed zither) It was made by Reed Musical Company in Chicago in the late 1920s. This particular instrument is in exceptional condition. It has no cracks, warps, or discoloration. All of the strings are intact as are all of the posts and the bridges. Though I didn't do a very good job taking the photos, the original painted labeling is fabulous- it is a very beautiful and playable instrument. I have also included a bow, the original sheet music, the original box(which is coming apart slightly) and the original sales slip dated Aug 14, 1929. I have started the biiding somehwhat higher on this instrument than I would a Ukelin- and that is because its very much one-of-a-kind. 1920s Ukelin. International Musical Corporation One sound hole. Rectangular box style. This Ukelin was offered for sale by the International Musical Corporation. In the mid 1920s. It is easy to date this particular instrument because of its style, type and label. This Ukelin is in excellent physical and playable condition. There are no warps or cracks. It is missing several strings, you can replace these simple enough with a similar guage guitar string at your local music store- ask for their help! You can also order Ukelin strings sets online but those can be fairly expensive. Obviously there are scuffs and scratches, but for its age it looks pretty spectacular. Is in excellent shape no chips or damage to the wood but the finish is old looking. On the inside it says the original price at the time was $35.00. Which had to be alot of money back then. Vintage Ukelin Manufacturers Advertising Co. , Guitar Shaped, Two Holes 1930's
I picked this item up at an estate auction. I don't know too much about this item except from the online research I did. You are bidding on a vintage Ukelin that was distributed exclusively by Manufacturers Advertising Company. I'm guess this is dated in the early 1930's. There's actually paperwork with it that has a date of 1937 of its purchase. The exact age I'm sure collectors will know. The Ukelin looks to be in great shape. Except for some light scratching from age. All the strings are attached and the instrument doesn't seem to be warped or bowed. Still has a nice shiny display on it. The back is a black color with slight white chalky substance. Should be easy to clean, but I'll leave that to buyer because I'm not an expert. It has 4 foam like white feet on the back that has slight wear. There is a number(3714) ... moreon the back. I'm not quite sure what that means. Along with the Ukelin comes its instructions, a company order form, song book, rosin, and some kind of tool. It may be to tighten strings. There's also a small colorful circular thing. It may be a pick, please see the picture and you be the judge. The bow looks totally intact but its hairs are coming off and it needs redone. This is a Ukelin string instrument from the early part of the century. No date on it but the owner believes it to be 1920s; judging from some of the other similar items on ebay; this is probably pretty close. It has a very rich and full sound. It appears to be played with a bow; the bow is included but it has no string and could be missing other pieces; not sure what it looked like originally so not sure if the string is the only thing missing(see photos for detail) Considering the age. It is in remarkably good condition. Though it does, of course, have the expected dings, scratches and wear and tear of an item that is almost 100 years old. Ukelin Musical Instrument Late 1920's
Here is a great looking. Collectible piece from the late 1920’s to the 30’s. This Ukelin is 24” long, 5” wide and 1 ½” tall. It’s in excellent condition, no, chips, dents, scratches or broken strings. It even has the original bow, pick and key. It’s in the original box, but the lid to the box is missing. The artwork on this instrument is beautiful. It would make a great display piece or if you’re more musically inclined than I am you might just want to play beautiful music on it.

Offered for your consideration tonight is this Antique Ukelin string musical instrument complete with bow. I'm not sure if these came with bows or not. The bow is marked made in Germany. I believe the Ukelin is made of Fruitwood and the overall condition is good. There are no breaks or repairs. There is a little surface rust on the tuner keys and some on the 2 metal strips on each side. it measures 27 1/4" long and the bow measures 18" long. there is no reserve.

This is a vintage Ukelin made by the International Musical Corporation in Hoboken. New Jersey in 1925. It could use some cleaning and maybe some wood polish. This is a very nicely detailed vintage instrument which has been in storage for a number of years. It has all of the metal strings on upper and lower rows for each soundbox. The strings all look to be in original and in very good condition. The paper labels are intact in the sound boxes. The only damage I can find is that the one chrome band on the side has the chrome bubbling in an area and the one end of the instrument body has started to seperate(see pictures) Included are the bow. Tuning key, finger pick and wire fixture( I do not know what it is for) original box(which is in poor condition) Direction Booklet with 10 songs, guaranty paperwork, bill of sale from 1928 and about 39 ... moreadditional pages of unbound sheet music. Original box is dusty inside and out and so is the ukelin, seems to be dark coal dust like it sat for decades in a coal heated house somewhere, I got it at a flea market, it needs to be cleaned, original box is deteriorated but contents are preserved decent, ukelin interior labels inside top and bottom sound holes read"Price $35, Ukelin, Distributed Exclusively By, The Bosstone Company, 150 Liverpool St. East Boston, Mass" original"Directions for Playing the Ukelin" copyright 1925 by same company is in very nice condition and includes directions on how play it and how to tune it using a piano, has 16 internal pages including some music, also included are 40 separate items of sheet music mostly published by Johann Schick, 956 3rd Ave. N.Y. for Columbia Zither, guitar zither, mandolin harp, celestaphone, ukelin decals ... moreare all in nice shape showing letters and numbers, two strings are missing(the smallest strings in the 1 and 2 positions and they look the same as guitar strings to me) all tuners present, the sound box is wood and in good solid condition except just starting to separate at top and bottom joints, looks like an easy repair with some wood glue and clamps would suffice, plays and sounds ok to me as is(I'm a guitar and banjo picker) bow's horsehair is disintegrated, box contains an old envelope with Bosstone address on it but nothing in it and broken pieces of horsehair. Separate music is all in good condition, two have little holes punched in them after having been folded in quarters, only top and bottom sheets discolored and some edges as they were stacked pretty straight which protected the paper, titles are as follows, some of which are foldouts of more than one page; many have lyrics. It includes the Directions booklet with music. Wire holder for music book, Bow, adjusting tool for tuning. Everything is in working order. Booklet has a copywright date of 1925, Tuning may be required. No crack or broken pieces. See photos for more details"Ukelin" is one of the more common trade names of a type of stringed musical instrument marketed from the early 1920s until about 1965. Ukelins combine two sets of strings. One group of sixteen strings tuned to the scale of C(from middle C on a piano to the C two octaves above) plus four groups of four strings, each group tuned to a chord. The instrument is meant to be placed on a table with ... morethe larger end toward the performer, and while the right hand plays the melody on the treble strings with a violin bow, accompanying chords are played on the bass strings with the left hand using either the fingers or a pick. Each string and chord group is numbered, and sheet music is provided in a special numerical system intended to simplify playing for persons unable to read standard musical notation. Ukelins were sold by the Phonoharp Company of East Boston. Massachusetts, and its subsidiaries, which apparently included the Bosstone Company. Ukelins were made in American during the 1930's and sold door to door for $30.00- a lot of money at the time. The instrument is a combination of violin and ukelele. And was played with a bow, which I don't have to include. Although I am a guitar player, I have used this lovely instrument solely as a wall decoration and as part of my collection of exotic instruments from around the world. I don't know how to play it! This ukelin is in good condition and could be tuned and played. All you need is an instruction book and a bow. A google search will reveal all the info you could possibly want on this subject. It has all 32 strings although it needs to be tuned or have the strings replaced. The number"65" appears to be etched on the back. The labels inside the cutout holes read as follows: Price $35.00/UKELIN/Distributed Exclusively by the International Musical Corporation/14th and Bloomfield Streets/Hoboken. N.J. Based on available research. This indicates this item was one of the earliest models produced between 1926 and 1931. The following excerpt is from the Hoboken Historical Museum: A ukelin. Manufactured and sold from the 1920's until 1972. It is the product of a musical-gadget minded time, when instrument inventors and manufacturers raced to outdo one another with cross-bred instrument novelties and musical monstrosities. Ukelins have two levels of strings. The first set of sixteen strings. Ukelin Old Antique String Musical Instrument Jersey City, N.J. Unusual Guitar?
This is one of the oddest things I've ever found! It is a tringed instrument called a"Ukelin" and was manufactured in New Jersey! It is about 29 inches in length and 7 1/2 inches at the widest. It is about 1 1/2 inches deep. It is very hard to read the two labels inside the strings without disturbing them. I have no idea how old this is or if it is rare. It is in pretty good shape with some scratches etc. but I think it's all there. It weighs approx. 5 pounds or a little heavier.

THIS IS A NICE VINTAGE ANTIQUE UKELIN. MADE AROUND 1926. UKELINS WERE SOLD BY THE PNONOHARP COMPANY OF EAST BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTES, AND IT'S SUBSIDARIES. IN 1923 A PATENT WAS FILED AND APPROVED IN 1926. PHONOHARP MERGED WITH OSCAR SCHMIDT INTERNATIONAL, INC. NEW JERSEY. UKELINS WERE THEN SOLD BY THEM AND IT'S SUBSIDARIES, WHICH ONE OF THEM WAS THE MANUFACTURES' ADVERTISING COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY. THIS UKELIN ONLY HAS ONE BROKEN STRING, WHICH WAS TWISTED BACK TOGETHER BY SOMEONE, THIS IS AN ESTATE FIND. BODY OF UKELIN IS SOLID WITH NORMAL SCRATCHES AND WEAR ON THE BACK SIDE, WHERE IT LAID WHEN IT WAS PLAYED. LOOKS AS IF A SMALL CRACK WAS REPAIRED A WHILE AGO TOO, SEE PICS.
