There are 17 frets and they are in reasonably good shape. The mahogany neck is tight and straight and the fingerboard has mother-of-pearl dot inlay markers. The top is spruce and has a large crack. There are no splinters or missing pieces of wood and the crack should close nicely. There are 2 areas on the bowlback where the staves have separated but there are no cracks and the staves close nicely when pressure is applied. The decorative purfling on the top has missing pieces. The scratch plate is cracked but it is complete and has the stylized"OS" design that identifies it as an Oscar Schmidt. The tailpiece plate where the strings are attached is damaged(see picture) The number"4" is stamped on the volute. There is no reserve for this old mandolin in need of work. Here is your opportunity to own a reliable and professional grade Gibson mandolin. The wood has seasoned for 70 years and resonates very clearly and crisply. The decorative features on this are rare for the early A mandolins. Like the diamond and Gibson mother of pearl headstock inlays. Note the extra binding placed around the fretboard. ANTIQUE turn of the century BOWBACK MANDOLIN WITH ORIGINAL CASE
Offered for your consideration is this antique 8 string mandolin with its original case. This mandolin is a bow back mandolin and is in need of cleaning and some repairing to the veneer of the hand plate on the piece. The actual design detail has some cracking and the inlaid is raised a bit. The ivory pegs are in good condition and still work. The case is strong and has a handle made of leather with a number 4-10 on it. I am selling this wonderful piece for my friend. It was stored away and has not been used in some time. I am not a musician and I can't tell you much else about this item except it is truly unique and has nice inlaid work. The fret board does have some mother of pearl on it as well. Mandolin measures 23" long and is 7 1/2" at the widest part and 2 1/2 inches wide at the end of the piece. The mandolin is 4" ... moretall when laying down. 1917 Gibson Model A Mandolin vintage antique
Up for sale is a 1917 Gibson Model-A mandolin. It is a wonderful mandolin. It is in great condition for its age. There is some finish crazing and a some wear in the paint. Particularly around the edges of the top. It appears that everything is original, though the tailpiece cover and one tuner bushing is missing. It plays well. It could use a set-up, as the action is probably set a little low(there is a little paper under the A strings to lessen this problem, but it should probably receive a proper set up) There is some fret buzz on harder notes, particularly on the fifth fret A strings. Other tuners were installed at some point, but the originals have been re-installed. There are a few holes from the other tuners, though they are all completely covered by the back plate of the original tuners. The round edge of the pickguard has chipped ... moreoff. The original strap peg on the bridge piece is missing, leaving a approx. 3/8" drilled hole. Near the endpin their is a small crack in the back. It is minor and doesn't appear to be spreading. Unfortunately, the original case is not present. The FON and Serial number date the mandolin to 1916-1917 depending on the dating method used. It is a black-top mandolin, which is unique. It does not appear to be refinished, but I cannot be 100% sure that it is not. Black was offered as a color on the model-A, but I am not sure if it was for this year. Antique Washburn Cremonatone Bowlback Mandolin
The Washburn. Best In The World"as it reads on the inside label. This is an antique turn of the century Washburn Bowlback Mandolin. It has some dates on the inside one being 1893 and the other being 1894 pertaining to awards this model won at world's fairs. I think it's safe to assume this specific instrument dates from 1894 through 1905. I have never strung it up but there seems to be nothing majorly wrong with this instrument. The neck is VERY solid. All it's pegs are still there, and it has it's original bridge still. The complete label on the inside of the instrument reads. Gold Medal and Deploma of Honor. Antwerp 1894. Highest Award at World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago 1893. The Washburn. Best in the world. Number: 228808. The material and workmanship of this Washburn instrument guaranteed for one year from ... moredate of original purchase provided this label is not mutilated. Cremonatone. The only thing physically wrong with this instrument is a seam that has come slightly apart on the back of the bowl which could be glued with little effort. Some minor things to worry about: the pick guard is curling up a bit on the edges. There seems to be some paint smudged on the back, and there is a seemingly repaired crack on the front of the instrument. Everything can be clearly seen in the photos. All and all. For it's age and condition, this would make for a beautiful complete restoration project, or just throw some strings on it as is and i'm sure she'll sound awesome!

This gorgeous. 8-string antique mandolin was purchased by the consignor many years ago and it was love at first sight. He had it carefully restored and as you can see, the craftsman did a beautiful job. This is a George Washburn Cremonatone"New Model" bowl back mandolin circa 1890 to 1900. I have been unable to find a serial number and the sticker inside the sound hole simply reads: George Washburn New Model. The hard case. Which is shown in the last couple of photos, is included as well. The mandolin has the original ivory tuning pegs. Mother of pearl inlay position marks on the fingerboard and triangular MOP inlay around the sound hole.The bowl back is ... moremulti-ribbed and probably made from exotic rosewood. The pick guard is tortoise shell and the instrument has a beautiful crown motif tail piece that may well be sterling silver or silver plate. I'm not sure if you can see it in the photos. But the crown is adorned with a honey bee, spider and fly. There is intricate wood inlay around the sound hole and the outer edge of the mandolin as shown. The mandolin was restored many years ago and over the years it developed a couple of cracks in the top or face. These are clearly shown in the third photo. The cracks do not affect the outstanding sound quality; the consignor recently took the mandolin to an early music shop and the store owner tuned up the instrument and played an impromptu tune. The music shop said that repairing the cracks would cost around $120 to $150. And that has been taken into consideration when pricing this precious instrument. This is an 8 string instrument, I am not sure what body style this is called(I am not a music expert) The wood workmanship is excellent, great details. This is missing 2 strings. The wooden part across the bottom section that is under the strings is loose, as is the metal piece at the base that the string go under. The wood has a few scracthes on it but no holes or cracks that I can see. The neck piece has some fine inlayed details on it. The 8 turning keys look to all be original. You are bidding on a 1942 vintage/antique 4 string violin/fiddle by William Wilkanowski. 200. The violin itself is in very good condition and the wood is still shiny and good color. It's sort of a cherry color. The 4 strings are still intact and not broken. The violin does have some small scratches/knicks but they aren't bad and it's still in good condition. Inside the violin, you can see the label that says, W. Wilkanowski Violin Maker 1942#200. It comes inside a black case that has a purple lining. The case itself is in rough shape, with the leather coming off the handle, the metal parts are rusted and the edges are worn. See pictures. Jupiter Mandolin vintage antique Project
I am counting on those of you out in the mandolin universe to know more about this than I. It's manufacture, era, etc. but here is the in-hand description: It clearly reads inside. Improved Jupiter" so, that is what it is. It looks like it might be ready to take on some strings& just be played, but it does have a through crack on one of the slats of the back, which should be cleated& glued. Thre neck is firm& tight, but as you can see from one of the photos there is some separation at the joint, which appears to be separation from the tips of the slats, not from the neck block, because it is quite firm, but that ultimately should be determined by whomever takes it on. The bottom surface of the bass string is 3/32 from the top of the fret-board, so whether or not the neck should be re-set is not something that I am going ... moreto speak for, but please consider that as a distinct possibility before you bid. There appears to be some kind of a primitive home-made pick-up installed behind the bridge, there is a hole through the top with what looks like a wire connection. The other 4 screws seen on the top I am guessing were connection points for leads to an amplifier cable. Which also would have been home-made by the looks of things! Someone(s) did play the heck out of this as is evidenced from the tracks they left.so, I would assume that once this thing is up& running, it has the necessary stuff to make more music& to provide someone with the means to externalize all of those tunes that are bursting to come forth. The tuners seem really good& could probably use a little machine oil, that's all. Nut, Bridge, fret-board& frets all seem solid, as does the tight-grained spruce top. It also has 3 MOP dots.definitely a working man's tool. Rare Antique French Banjo Mandolin with Black Minstrel Dancing, Tigers, Inlaid
This is an unusual French mandolin or banjo. Very finely made with multiple inlaid woods and mother of pearl inlay. Featured is a scene with a black minstrel waltzing with a white woman in a red dress. Metal tiger surround the head of the banjo. It is intact and has all the strings screws. Strings are tight and skin on the head is intact. Measures 24" long and about 11" wide at the base. Condition: Some mother of pearl inlay is missing from the base of the mandolin(see photos) ~ I would estimate that about 50% of the white pearl inlay is intact around the border of the minstrel scene. It does not affect the appearance appreciably. There is a small crack in the fretboard. But it is only superficial and does not extend through the neck of the mandolin. Old Antique Vintage Pumpkin Seed Bowlback Mandolin 8 String Beautiful No Reserve
Beautiful old Mandolin. Bowlback/ pumpkin seed mandolin. I purchased it at a local flea market from a man that sells wonderful vintage instruments. I found it and was approached by an elderly gentleman who fell in love with this mandolin. He offered to tune it for me and began to tell me that he had played Mandolins all his life. He said this one had a very nice sound. I am not very knowledgeable about these instruments but liked it because of its pure beauty. I will describe to the best of my ability, but please see the photos. The mandolin measures approximately 24" long x 8" wide at widest area x 5 1/2" deep. It has 8 strings. This is an old piece and It does have a crack forming in the front and one along the back. The inlay on the front has chipped out a little. The neck has 3 mother of pearl circular pieces inlaid. On ... moreone side of the back looks like something indented the clear coat, I it is a little rough to the feel but very shiny in that area. The gentlemen did tell me the knobs were hard to turn, when he was tuning it. What a wonderful piece of musical history whether you are bidding on it for pure love of it, decoration or use. Antique 8-string bowl back"taterbug" or Neapolitan mandolin circa 1890's to 1920's. Sticker inside mandolin sound box: Tomaso Mandolin. Kimball Music Hall Chicago, Style C or G( Size: 24 1/2" X 7 1/2" wide X 6 1/2" deep. Features: Beautiful mother-of-pearl inlay around the sound hole and outer edges. Tortoise shell pick guard. The mandolin also has mother-of-pearl inlay position marks on the fingerboard. The rounded back has 24 small ribs flanked by two larger ribs joining the back to the body. The tuning pegs are celluloid or possibly ivory. The head stock has finely engraved metal ornamentation on the rear side as shown. The tail piece is ... moremarked: Pat. May 15 94(1894. Original mandolin case; Fabric-covered stiff paperboard with a single latch closure and a buckle around the narrow part of the neck. The leather carrying handle is broken. Condition: The mandolin has some scuffs and scrapes to the finish as shown. There are three visible narrow cracks in the top of the mandolin- one above the bridge and two on either side of the fret board below the sound hole. There is another crack that looks like it has been repaired that runs from the end of the tail piece down through the MOP pick guard. The cracks do not affect the sound quality- the mandolin has a beautiful tone. I am not sure if the fret board is supposed to have the curved indentation at the top near the sound hole. Or if it has been broken and repaired. The neck joint is firm and not cracked or loose. This beautiful instrument is still very playable and it exudes the warmth of old-world craftsmanship. Circa 1870-1880, but please make up your own mind about this. The mandolin measures approx 23 inches(558mm) long and is made from polished rosewood. With boxwood stringing between the ribs. It has a pine soundboard. And is beautifuly decorated with ornate mother of pearl inlay. It is in sound condition. Though some of the inlays are missing from around the edge(see photos) and there is an old split in the timber of the reinforcing piece around the base.see photos) This is sound. With no movement or lifting, and I suspect it is just a seasoning crack which has opened up as the timber has settled over the years(see photos) All the machine heads turn as they should one ... morehas a replacement knob. Antique Italian CARLOTTI Bowl Back MANDOLIN ~ 1886
An antique bowl back eight string(2 missing) mandolin possibly from Italy bearing the name CARLOTTI as shown. The mandolin measures approximately 23 1/2"L x 7"W x 5 3/4" Deep. The mandolin features beautiful inlay with ivory or bone around the sound hole and outer edges. A tortoise shell pick guard and mother-of-pearl inlay position marks on the fingerboard. T he rounded back has 15 small ribs flanked by two larger ribs joining the back to the body. The tuning pegs are celluloid or possibly ivory. The head stock has finely engraved metal ornamentation on the rear side as shown. The tail piece is marked: Pat. Oct. 26- 86(1886) The mandolin is being sold as is. I am not an expert. But I will try to answer questions and describe the condition the best that I can. CONDITION: There is with a small crack in the finger board. One ... moreof the thin strips of metal on the finger board also appears to be missing. The piece of ivory or bone at the top of the finger board also appears to be slightly chipped at one end. The metal tail piece is missing a screw. There are minor scuffs and scrapes to the wood finish and an old piece of tape with remnants of the adhesive on the back of the mandolin as shown. On offer is this antique mandolin made approx. in 1900s by Napoli maker Stridente. The mandolin is in very good condition for its age(see photos) It measures approx. 23.5"60 cm in length. Around the sound hole there is beautiful mother-of-pearl inlaying. The tuning keys are made of bone and the pickguard is made of genuine tortoise shell. The mandolin should have 8 strings. I would presume the 174 is a serial number. The fretboard looks like rosewood. Has 17 non-magnetic fre ts(brass? And also has two inlaid dots(none missing) The sound hole has beautiful inlaid purfling and more MOP. The inlaid tortoiseshe ll pick guard is free of cracks ... moreor chips. And looks like it once had two small screws since the re's two small holes. Bridge is complete. No cracks or repairs on the neck or head.and nec k is tight. Tuners look like they're vintage replacements since they seem out of place on this quality mandolin. Dental banding on top edge is missing some pieces. And the inlaid purfling is compressed from the tailpiece and string tension. Top is very separated, but I do see both cross braces intact. The back has two open seams. Basically. Up for bids is an antique. Eight-string, bowl-back mandolin. I purchased it at an auction. It was made by the Vega Company, which operated in Boston. Mass. from 1881 until 1970. When it was purchased by the Martin Company. My research indicates that the first Vega mandolins with serial numbers on them were produced in 1890. Description: The paper label inside reads“ Made by The Vega Company Boston Mass. USA. and“VEGA, in an oval, is embossed on the back of the headstock. The serial number“8338” is embossed on the top of the headstock. As for assigning a date to this number. The last serial number issued in 1890 was 992 and the last number issued in 1891 was 1638, so I assume it was made in 1891. It is 24” long. And the nine-rib bowl is 7 ½” wide and approximately 4 ¾” deep. It weighs 1 pound. 6 ounces(620 grams) I am not a musician. ... moreSo I can’t speak to the functioning or sound of this instrument. We are offering an antique. Circa late 1800‘s to early 1900’s, 12 string, bowl back mandolin, for restoration or parts. There are no identifying marks or label, but it looks most like an Osborn. Their factory was in NJ and the family is from the NY-NJ area, so that is a strong possibility. This mandolin measures 25" in length. 7 3/4" wide, 5 1/2" deep. The head is 8" in length, and the neck is 8-3/4" It was stunning in it’s heyday. The multiple woods have fine grains and rich colors. The detailed hand work is evident in the fourteen ribs and elegant intricate inlay work around the perimeter. Accented by mother of pearl inlays in neck and celluloid-inlaid pick guard- itself made of tortoise shell or celluloid or Bakelite. The colors are so rich. It may be the now-endangered Hawksbill turtle shell, then so widely used. ... moreIt actually plays fine and sounds great. Please note condition in photos. The tuning pegs are secure(though 2 are missing) And move well. Some strings missing, and all the strings are of unknown age. The neck is flat and not at all warped- although there is a crack near the bottom of the front. The neck joint looks good. A paper appliqué label had been applied over the neck at some time. A few parts are missing. The bowl is the worst challenge. The ribs have completely separated from incorrect storage- where it has been. Neglected, for at least the last 58 years. But the breaks are clean, at least. The head has a small surface scratch. The mandolin does not come with a case. Perhaps you can restore it to it’s former glory- or use the parts for your restoration project. We are not dealers or pickers making a big profit from you on unknown items from yard sales. Etc. This is an antique German pincushion or half doll. She is lovely pierrete or perroit with a mandolin done with great details. She has a black skull cap with three protruding brown curls. She has lovely facial features with pursed red lips peach rosy cheeks and almond accented eyes. She has a true art deco look and was done by German artists for sure. Both hands are away from her body and holding a mandolin also done with great details. The madolin is not shiny like the rest of the piece it is rough to the touch but is painted brown and black and has a full rounded back. Unfortunately the end of the mandolin has been broken off and a piece is missing. I did not even notice this at first but it is broken and I want to make sure any buyer is aware of this. Antique Vintage Kay Mandolin (N-15) IceCream Cone Headstock
This Mandolin is in good shape. Great starter mandolin. Normal wear and tear for a vintage piece. There are a few dings. You can see the code# N-15 inside the F-hole(probably had to do with their catalog model) I would think it was from around the 1950-1965 period.

Nice old antique bowlback mandolin, decorated, rosewood, great project
Hello. I am selling for a friend several old and antique plucked instruments. He collected for many years. I hope you will like them. Now you are bidding on a nice antique bowlback mandolin. Handmade probably in Italy, a beautiful and interesting piece. There is no label, I guess it was made around 1900 to 1930. Fine woods, the top is solid spruce, the back is made of rosewood with 23 thinner and 2 thicker ribs. The condition is medium, the mandolin needs some repair, the neck is slightly curved but playable. The fingerboard with 17 frets(condition is not good) is made of rosewood. 3 mop markers. Fine head, the tuners work well, decorated scratchplate and also mop decorations at the seam, I think the bridge is not original. The neck is slightly curved but playable, action at the 12th fret is 3 to 4mm. Very old but complete strings. A good ... morequality instrument! Total length: 630mm. Scale length: 330mm, width of the nut: 28mm, width 12th fret: 38mm. MEDIUM CONDITION! Damages two hairline cracks at the top. Antique Bowl-back Italian Mandolin. All in good playing order and condition
Hi Here we have a beautiful Neapolitan bowl back Mandolin in very good condition. Made by Pietro Bazzini Napoli. It is in good playing order after a light restoration and set up with a new set of strings and a low action. It is free from structural damage. Open cracks or splits. The mandolin has been repaired in the past to the top and back, all good and solid. The neck to body joint is clean and solid. The spruce top is in lovely original condition after light cleaning. The sound is crisp with good projection and sustain. Top is decorated with Ebony pinstripe as is the sound hole. On the neck are four mother of pearl dots Rear of the neck and back retain the original spirit varnish. The Rosewood pick guard is intact and in good condition The frets are in good condition. And the neck is straight and true. The machine heads are brass with ... morebone tuners, these have been polished and lubricated and work very well. The bridge is made from ebony There is a superb 17-piece polished bowl back in rosewood with contrasting maple strips separating the staves. With no cracks or splits All in all a beautiful playable instrument in excellent condition for it's age.
