Antique 1880 6 1/2 Foot Steinway & Sons Square Grand Piano
I called Steinway& Sons and I was told this piano was sold in 1880. I have had this piano for 14 years. I sort of inherited and thought one of my children would make use of it. However they all opted for other instruments(go figure) I am fairly ignorant when it comes to piano's so I brought in an expert. It has made a great piece of furniture in my Victorian home but it is time for a change. Also it should be with someone that can apreciate it more than I can. There are 85 keys and none are chipped. The soundboard was checked out and there are no cracks. There are a couple of keys that were sticking and I had the piano expert look further into it. It was quite amazing for me to watch a craftsman at work. He told me this piano had been restored and had new hammers and more. And they look like new. He said that who ever did the work ... moreknew what they were doing and I can see he was impressed. I can share his name and number with anyone who is series about this piano. This is a quality piano. There is wear in the wood from age and a flower vase through the years. Again the heart of this piano has been restored and will need a little work from sitting unused for years. The restoration work still looks new. Antique Steinway Studio Upright Piano
What can you say about a Steinway? A great piano when new. Still a great piano. Craftsmanship built to last. The finish has some dents and dings but overall it's not bad. Soundboard and ribs are still tightly glued with no cracks. This is unusual even in Steinways. It indicates it has been well cared-for. Tuning pins are tight. Bass strings are live. Hammers and butt flanges are new. Touch is even and responsive. Tone is classic Steinway with clean. Authoritative bass and crisp treble. An investment for a serious musician. I am a piano technician. I also play piano quite well. Unlike many others in the business. I have worked with keyboard instruments since 1970. I bought this piano in August for repair and resale. The previous owner had bought it at Steinway Hall. She said. It was not playing well and paint was missing on the lid and ... morefallboard(I have repainted them) This explains the attractive price I paid. Most of the keys were sticking down. Everything else looked pretty good. They had a technician work on it but he died before he could get it playing right. Then their son lost interest in music and it just sat. When it came to my shop I did my usual extensive assessment. The soundboard is intact. The braces and bridges are still tightly glued. It still has good downbearing. Which means there is still a good arch in the soundboard. The bridges are very good up to the top octave, where there is minor cracking.The tuning pins are very tight and it holds its tune quite well. The plate is solid with no cracks. The hammers had been replaced some years ago. The piano had been refurbished and repainted in the 1960's by my guess. That technician restyled the case. Making it appear more modern, replaced the hammers and recovered the keys. The sticky keys were due to tight butt flanges(the axle pins the hammers rotate on) Which I replaced. Also included is the thin paper that goes under the keytops. Yes these are all original antique peices, NO PLASTIC OR RESIN HERE! Approximately a couple hundred tails and 700-800 fronts. The leather covered wood case is really cool, small and lite. It measures 14 x 8 1/2 x 5' tall. It has brass edges and a place to engrave a name on the top. WOW! WHAT A FIND! Let me start by saying that I own a piano store and I see many pianos and benches every day. In the past 20 years. I have only seen one other original steinway adjustable bench come thru my doors. So yes, this is rare! This just came in with a 1928 Steinway B. This bench was with the piano since new! This is genuine leather and adjustable from 17" high and raises to a max of 20" high. The bench measures 22" long and is 17" wide. Feautures rounded art case legs with a black ebony satin finish. Overall for it's age it is excellent but there is some checking/cracking to the finish but very minor. Bid with confidence. You wont find another anytime soon. This piano is old as dirt. I am selling it for a friend of mine who said it was made in the late 1800's. Somewhere around 1870. It needs to be fixed but that's all he knows. It has been in storage for decades. The wood looks good for the age. I don't know about the sound but it looks good under the hood. This auction is for a vintage or antique Steinway and son's piano bench. As we're not sure of the age. The underside of bench is made with cast metal and is stamped Steinway and Son's. Additionally. The knobs on either side are used to adjust the height of the bench. The top of the bench is made of leather, however, the four corners have become somewhat cracked(as seen in picture) This bench has been acquired through an estate sale of a known concert pianist in NYC. I have asked on a popular Antique Furniture site and submitted detailed pictures and they verify they are from that date range however it is yet to be determined exactly what they came off of. They have not been refinished only wiped down with a dust cloth. They look very nice for being over a 100 or more years old. Steinway Model S piano 1940 Fully Restored! Antique
This is a beautiful Steinway Model'S' piano built in 1940 and fully restored by Knauer Pianos in Northridge. CA in 2006. The piano has been lovingly cared for in a pet-free, smoke-free home. The piano is in really, really excellent condition and just shows some very minor wear from being played. The piano has been tuned professionally approx. once a year. New York City in 1870 as shown by its serial number(20138) which is imprinted on the inside of the piano(see photo) This model has a patent date of Nov. 29, 1859. This piano is presently owned by Masanobu Ikemiya, Grammy-nominated, internationally known pianist and impresario. Mr. Ikemiya has successfully used this piano in recitals both in the U.S. and Japan since the late 1980's including his New York debut at Merkin Concert Hall on June 13, 1993. The piano is now permanently housed in Mr. Ikemiya’s retirement home in Bar Harbor, Maine. Condition This rare Steinway Square Grand piano is in excellent condition. The action is original and the case has its original ebony finish and has ... morenever been refinished. Mr. Ikemiya asserts this piano has been kept and is still in concert condition in both quality of action and sound. The hammers and all the ivory keys are original and in good condition. The strings. However, have been replaced using Steinway technicians and Mr. Ikemiya has replaced the wooden rods on the foot pedal support as seen in photo. In a letter to Mr. Ikemiya dated January 21. 1993, commenting on Mr. Ikemiya’s piano, Laurence Libin, Curator-in-Charge, Department of Musical Instruments, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, states, During the nineteenth century, square’ pianos far outnumbered grands and upright models, and often appeared on concert stages as well as in homes. Sophisticated square pianos such Steinway’s offer a palette of surprising tone colors that enliven music from Beethoven to Joplin. Antique Steinway Grand Piano *Read Description Carefully!
It is with regret that I am listing my Steinway piano. Although I played it for many years. I had to store it for some time and rodents have gotten in and made a mess. They are gone but the debris they left behind has the entire keyboard stuck. The piano tuner who just left my house said there is nothing he can do. An off-frame restoration is what he suggested and that is out of my reach. The first four photographs I have posted are of the piano as it sits. The last is to show you what it will look like after proper restorative measures have been taken. It was a splendid piece and well worth the trouble. Please note: This is huge and heavy. Steinway& Sons Square Grand Piano in hand carved rosewood case built in 1870. Good original condition. Original old 85 keys. Two foot pedals and carved foot lyre, Length 80" Width 44" Serial Number 22114, Registered 1870. PAT. Nov.29. 1859, New York Hand carved rosewood cabinet finished on all four sides so it was either a floor model or their best model made. The pierced carved music rack. Curved legs, rich scalloped edge on the bottom and massive molding all around the top of the case are all the highest quality. The gold guild is in good condition. This will need to be clean and tuned. This was d esi gned to be play either facing the wall or facing out into the room. The rosewood was wrapped around the four sides to make a unbroken finish. Per Steinways historical department this piano was sold to Lyon& Healy Chicago November 17. 1908. Lyon& Healy had their own Art Room to display their most prominent pianos as seen in the photo provided.
