The head and its facial features are typical of the Chokwe style. Whistles such as this were also found among a number of ethnic groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Angola. A hunter would use such whistles during a game to call his dog or to call other hunters when facing a challenge with an animal. In case he got lost, or when he is in distress. Whistles were also used to accompany music and to rhythm dances. In some point, they were considered as part of royal insignia, and part of ritual. Among the Chokwe for instance, such whistles were found in the diviner's basket as part of the divination implements. This whistle is well-carved and indeed a real piece of art. The fine item you are considering is a Vintage Antique Early 1800‘s.Large Wood Flute. I have lots of photos below. So be sure to scroll down to the bottom of this page to take a better look. This beautiful, very well made, antique flute has no maker’s name that I can find, but from the style of the flute and case, I’d say it dates to the early or mid 1800’s. The flute measures 27” long overall when assembled. The instrument has some issues, these being a very tight hairline/grain crack on the mouthpiece section, which looks old, is tight, and isn’t going anywhere, and it looks like there are a few springs missing. Of course, I can’t guarantee the pads on an instrument of this age, but overall the flute is solid and makes a great impression. Antique Sicccama Cocus wood Flute anno 1850 Civil War Era
I got these three instraments from the estate sale of an 97 year old man. First this very interesting19th Century Flute. I was told it is made of beautiful cocus wood. The flute is in"as found" condition with no cracks to the wood body. The keys are badly tarnished but look all right but I'm no expert. There is no makers stamp on any of the pieces. the head joint is half-lined. All the Lever Keys are beautifully block mounted. Overall length of this flute is 25 inch. It incudes the original fitted wooden box. This came from the estate of a 97 year old man. His elderly daughter inlaw said this belonged to his granfather who was in the Civil War. She didn't know if he played it there but it had been passed down thoug the family since then. I bought some great antique items from this estate including a 18th century American ... moredesk which had also been passed down. There's two more instraments which are much newer and she didn't know where they came from but they are much newer and may have been given to him. The estate was told that if this was restored it would retail for as muh as $3000. You be the judge and I'm starting the bidding at half so you have room to have it restored. Nach Meyer Antique Wood Flute Low B 11 Key Partial Restored A-440hz Needs Adjust
I apologize for ending the original item and relisting it. The shipping calculator was incorrect and needed to be fixed. To prevent more errors it was easier for bidders to not get confused with shipping costs if I just relisted. Thank you. This lovely old Nach Meyer flute is in fantastic condition(9.5/10) with the ONLY two minor flaws being a small chip out of the barrel and the smallest hairline crack starting on the top of the head(crown end) The ebony wood is immaculate. No noticeable scratches or scuffs nor gouges, the keys have original patina and are in excellent shape and everything is complete. This is the model that goes to low B and is pitched in the key of C@ A-440hz(first 6 holes closed produces a D, some call the pitch a"D" flute) All keys spring properly. The tenons were just re-threaded with a cotton thread but every ... morelayer was treated with a beeswax-infused cork grease to protect the cotton from swelling due to moisture. The pads were just replaced with Prestini white leather pads(and a few were PrecisionUSA) which need to be seated yet. Too many projects at the moment so this flute must go to the highest bidder! This is such a beautiful flute that I'm sure the new owner will love it to pieces! These Nach Meyer instruments are easy to pop out low notes and project very well in the upper registers as well. I've tried to show the start of the hairline crack in the head but it's too small to photograph. The original case is included(could use a hinge) and some original old new leather pads are included in the round storage compartment. More photos on request, please view photos carefully. Please do not ask for sound clips as this flute needs adjusting to play. Vintage antique wood piccolo and flute. Both need a little work. The piccolo is missing the mouth end and the flute need new cork. The joints are loose. The flute also has 2 small cracks. The piccolo is marked with a Chicago. Paris, London stamp and also has LP and D. I can't make out the stamp on the flute. Only a few words. It does have a signature which I can't read. It is also marked Legion then? 86 is stamped on it and also the french word for patent. The flute comes in an old leather case.

Untitled Document Antique Lyon& Healy wooden flute This truly antique flute does not have any brand on it. But it is most likely a flute imported from Germany by Lyon& Healy, as picture in the 1920's Lyon Healy catalog- Lyon& Healy imported wooden flutes of similar construction and with similar keys from Mollenhauer, Otto Monning and Meyer. I am attaching a sample from the catalog of a similar(and not identical) flute offered by Lyon& Healy in 1920's. The flute I offer is a 13 keys flute in key of C. Made of grenadilla wood. The keys go down to B, most likely Meyer system, it has cork joints and is made of grenadilla wood. The tuning slide is missing, but the tuning cork inside a head joint is there and it can be moved to tune the flute. The keys work, all springs are in place, the pads are there, but the are quite ... moreold and need to be replaced/adjusted. The are signs of older, previous repairs. The key to the oblong body case. Covered with'Seal Grain Keratol' is still there, but the case is worn out. The total lentgh of the flute is 28-1/8" The length without a head joint is 19-1/4" Due to its age it's being sold as is. I HAVE FOUND ONE OTHER VERSION OF THIS FLUTE ON A FLUTIST'S WEBSITE AND HE CALLED THIS QUITE POSSIBLY THE BEST CONICAL FLUTE MADE IN THE AMERICAS. THAT IS QUITE A STATEMENT. THIS IS A COCUS WOOD AND SILVER(I BELIEVE IT IS 800 GERMAN SILVER) FLUTE WITH 6 HOLES AND 8 KEYS. IT IS 4 PIECES AND WHEN TOGETHER IT MEASURES 26 INCHES. OVERALL, IT IS IN REALLY QUITE GOOD CONDITION. ALL THE KEYS SEEM TO ... moreWORK PRETTY WELL. PROBABLY JUST NEED A LITTLE GREASE TO WORK SMOOTHLY. THE 4 PIECES FIT TOGETHER WITH NO PROBLEM, THOUGH THE CORK BETWEEN PIECE 3 AND 4 SEEMS TO HAVE LOOSENED A LITTLE BIT. Next owner will certainly decide to show the flute to his personal repairman, but the instrument plays pretty fine right now. Jerome Thibouville-Lamy antique wood flute
This is a beautiful Jerome Thibouville-Lamy Paris wood flute. 10 key. It has just been repadded, cleaned and oiled. I have a small woodwind repair shop and did the work myself. This flute is in the key of C, and has a beautiful warm tone. It plays beautifully down to the low C# but I personally cannot get the low C to play. I believe it is just because of a weak pinky finger not being able to keep the holes covered and then having to push down the spatula hard enough. There is one key that has a broken off spatula, I think it is a key that you would use to vent the F# I have not seen this key on the other antique flutes that I have owned. It is playable as is however, you can press down on the curved part that goes over the F key and it will open. Any large repair shop that does soldering should be able to solder on a new spatula for it, ... moreI have a very small shop and do not do soldering. It is the key that I am pointing to in the photo) There is a crack in the barrel, as shown in the photos, however the barrel is metal lined and this does not create a problem. All pieces except the barrel have the JTL logo. The logo on the head is as follows: Sun" logo. JTL, Cloud logo" Jerome Thibouville-Lamy, then something that I cannot read, then Paris, then 2 letters that appear to be G.O, then after that what looks like 1ere Q 13. This is an antique wood flute with original case from a local estate. It is signed"J. Bauer Chicago" and measures 25 3/4" long overall assembled(with tuning slide fully inserted/ not sure of key) We did a quick look on-line. And found that Julius Bauer was active in Chicago as a instrument maker c.1858- 1863. It's a beautiful dark rosewood body, with nickel silver plated head, keys, and fittings. The stamped signature features an American Eagle atop ctossed arrows/ Victory banner. The original brain-tanned leather case is included. Condition: As-found, not played in many decades. All keys and slides move freely, with working springs. Aside from normal signs of age to pads, all we see to mention is a tight crack in the brass lined tuning barrel's outer wood covering(see close-up image#11) and cork needing replacement ... moreat one joint(see images/ joint assembles loosely without cork) With with routine service, it will likely be a good player. Antique Wurlitzer 8 key Wood Flute: Fully Restored
This is a rare early example of a very high quality flute from the Wurlitzer shop in Chicago. Made around the turn of the century. This flute features an ivory headjoint with the embouchure hole still intact. There is a small crack on the back side of the head which has been filled. There are absolutely NO cracks in the wood of this flute anywhere and this flute was made of exceptional quality wood. The grenadilla is a very fine, tight grain that resembles the smoothness of ebony. The left hand heart joint is made of what I believe to be cocus wood and has a stunning grain to it. The serial numbers on the heart and the barrel match, as do the Wurlitzer stamps. I believe this was an upgrade for this flute, possibly to darken the sound a bit. All of the keys bear the key mark of"XI" or"IX" depending on how you look at it) ... moreThe C and C-sharp touches have both XI and III marked on them. It is somewhat unusual to have key marks, and it is still unknown as to whether they denote a specific key maker, or help the right set of keys go with the right instrument. The C and C-sharp touches feature rollers and are of an elegant design I have not seen before on German made flutes, usually being found on French design flutes. The metal rings and head cap match my G. Cloos flute, which dates from around the same period, so it is likely that they share the same manufacturer since Wurlitzer is known to import flutes and mark them with their own stamp. This flute plays very strongly all the way to the low C and with good intonation for one of these simple system flutes. Pitch is anywhere between A=435 to A=445. And plays solidly at 440 with the head out about as far as it is in the pictures above. The flute has been completely refurbished- wood oiled, new head cork, new tenon wrappings, new pads, and keys polished. The case is original to the flute and is also in exceptional condition- this flute was loved and well taken care of. Antique Martin Freres Wood Boehm System Flute
This antique Martin Freres Boehm system flute is in amazing condition. It is made of what appears to be cocuswood with a high polish French varnish on top. The embouchure hole is crisp and small. Which is very characteristic of these fine flutes. The keywork is silver plated and I cannot find any evidence of plating wear to it. The pads appear newer, but will require some tweaking for this flute to play 100% There is a very tight hairline crack at the tenon of the headjoint that has been sealed some time ago and does not go into the bore. The headjoint is not metal lined- which gives this flute a nice woody and refined sound. There is a metal sleeve in the tenon for the joint. I bought this flute intending it to be a project but have not had the time to do anything with it and would rather it go to someone that has the time and will play ... moreit more than I can. It plays at 440 with the head out 1/8-1/4 of an inch. The flute dates from around the 1870's- 1880's. And is from the time period where Martin Freres flutes were high quality and sought after. The company was sold just before the turn of the century, and the early 20th century flutes were not the same quality as what you will find here. The flute comes with the original case, which is in superb condition, and a cover that fits snuggly since the original key to latch the case has been lost. This flute comes from a non-smoking home. One brass square brass key. This is an exceptionally handsome English flute with no exterior cracks to the wood. The head of highly figured boxwood, the other joints a bit more plain. There’s an almost invisible repair to the 435 top joint. We find this flute works well with the original top joint and even better with the modern 415 center. Although it’s a bit too new to be a proper“baroque” instrument. EARLY ANTIQUE WOODEN FLUTE FIFE--23" LONG--ROSE WOOD?--ESTATE FIND--LOOK!
You are bidding on an ANTIQUE wooden flute/fife! This rose wood? flute measures approx. 23 1/4" long. And looks like it breaks down into 4 or 5 pieces. There are no makers marks, hallmarks, or numbers that I can see anywhere on the flute. The connector that attaches to the mouthpiece has several cracks in the wood, and someone has taped it as you can see in the photo. There are four silver keys, all of which have tarnished. The keys still function, but need to be cleaned and un-stuck a little bit. I can get one wooden section to come apart on the flute, but the other sections are pretty stuck together. I don't want to damage anything, so leaving it as is. This came from a local estate, and is being sold in as found condition. Overall NEAT piece to add to your collection! For sale is some sort of antique victorian period woodwind instrument. It looks like a cross between a flute. Fife, and piccolo. It measures about 11 13/16" long and is made of wood with metal hardware. It has 2 parts, a mouthpiece area and the main body area with the holes. It is in very good shape with typical light wear from age and use, as pictured. I see 2 slight cracks on the end portion(see last pic) and a small area(see 3rd pic lower left area) where it looks like a surface scar was filled repaired a very long time ago with some sort of amber/sappy material and since then some of that repair material has worn away. That damage appears to be surface/cosmetic but I am no expert so this is only my best guess assessment. I wonder if this was a child's instrument? So there you have it. Antique Wood English FLAGEOLET Flute with Box, box signed C FLAGEOLET NO.65
Up for auction this evening is an Estate fresh Antique Wood English FLAGEOLET Flute with Box. Box is signed C FLAGEOLET NO.65. I have no clue if it works, there is a large crack that extends all the way down and about an inch down past the bone ring, it has an old repair where it looks like it was filled and a small nail is in each side of the crack. The other small skinny piece has no chips or cracks. Measures a tad over 15 1/2 inches long when put together, the piece you blow in measures 8 inches across and the other skinny piece measures a tad over 7 1/2 inches across not including the part that fits into the other piece. Not pictured because I have just noticed it is three pieces, the moutpiece section with the crack is seperate, it measures 4 3/4 inches across not including the part that into the middle piece, the middle piece measures ... more3 1/4 inches across nit including the piece that fits into the other piece, it has a 1 inch crack that looks like it extended down from the large crack. The FLAGEOLET is not signed, the box is signed as pictured, box is very fragile, has tape is coming apart and is missing the end tab on the cover. Antique Wooden Open-Hole Flute, Early 1900's Grenadilla Wood, Ebony Flute, NR
Please find listed for auction an Antique open-hole Wooden Flute. There are no markings on this instrument that we can find. But we believe it to be an early 1900's European designed flute(based on research, but no guarantee) The wood appears to be Grenadilla, similar to that of wooden clarinets, oboes, and bassoons. There is a long crack on the head joint and the barrel. These two pieces have brass fittings. Pads are deteriorated, but all keys move freely. Item is sold as is. Antique French Wood Simple System 6 Key Piccolo, Flute w/ Case
Thank you for looking. This is an antique French simple system 6 key piccolo. Marked"Gonetet Cie. Paris, D flat, L.P. the headjoint is marked"France" Approximate measurements are as follow: overall 11 5/8" headjoint/barrel 4 3/4" body 7 5/8" center of embouchure hole to end 9 3/4" 1st(C# tonehole to end 5 3/4" It is grenadilla/ebony wood with the only crack being in the headjoint(see pic) The headjoint is partially lined and I believe that the crack may only extend to where it is still lined with metal; it is possible that it will need filling, however. There are some gouges to the embouchure hole(see pic) and the crown is missing. All pads should be replaced, as one is missing and the rest are so ancient they will never seal properly. The mechanism moves as it should, so it should be an easy restoration ... moreresulting in a charming antique instrument! Included is what I presume to be the original case, which is taped together at give hinge and will not close, but will be rubber banded shut for the instrument's protection. I am a certified flute repair technician and classically trained flutist, however antique instruments are not my area of expertise. This piccolo is being sold as-is, described to the best of my knowledge, though I see no reason why it wouldn't make a great addition to the flute collector's collection! Antique C SCOTCHER & SON WOOD WOODEN TREEN Piccolo Fife Flute Instrument
This is a woodwind piccolo(some might call it a fife) It is very old. Wooden body with metal(silver? keys and rings. At least one of the rings and the very end piece are missing, but I believe all of the keys are there. There are 6 holds in addition to the mouthpiece hole. The cork is bad and will probably need to be replaced. There is also a crack in the wood in the mouthpiece section Because I don't know about this instrument as I'm not knowledgeable about them. It looks similar to some of the Koch recorders that have sold here on eBay but we think it would be marked as such? On that note. Any insight you might be able to share about this great vintage instrument would be appreciated! It's a handsome rosewood color and has quite a pleasing tone! It measures at just shy of 19" when assembled. It's in the exact condition as pictured. The cork has a chipped area and there are some dings/ scratches on the body of the pieces. The mouthpiece ... morehas some surface/ wood loss and the end-piece has two lines on each side- hard to tell if they're scratches/ surface cracks or if that's the way it was manufactured. In any case. As mentioned, it definitely plays! The case has fairly significant wear(again, as pictured. One of the latches does not secure and the leather strap(on the front) and one of the straps on the inside are snapped. Here is a killer wood and brass civil war era fife/flute. It is in good condition with some scrapes and dings. One brass end is bent a little as shown. The fife measures 17" long total with the brass end pieces measuring 2" each. The letters E.K. are carved in the fife as shown.
