Beautiful vintage Viola by Karl Hauser. Marked Karl Hauser KH in circle and GERMANY. Bubenreuth 19. This is a 16.5" 4/4 viola approx 27" in length. Body is 16.5" width is 9.5" at widest point. Bow is Roth-Glasser. Nice rich sound. Includes everything shown in picture. Small box is Sherman's Violin Rosin. The body of the viola is very good. It does have rosin from the bow under the strings(not bad) I wasn't sure how to clean it so am just presenting it the way it is. Winning bidder to pay shipping for 9lbs.

Vintage Antique Violin HOPF CF CP 1920's Viola
Up for sale is an antique violin. This was found in an attic. It reads"HOPF" on the back with a crown above it. The inside has an inscription which appears to read"HOPF CF" But I am not 100% sure. The approx. date would be the 1920's. It measures approx. 23 1/2" long. This belonged to a wealthy family of the time. I do not play the violin and cannot speak to condition beyond what I see. Please use the pics to access condition. As it sits, it is not playable. Some of the pieces are loose or have come off completely. You get what you see in the pics. RARE ANTIQUE LATE 18TH CENTURY FRENCH VIOLA BY JOSEPH THIRIOT FOR RESTORATION
Fine and rare antique french master viola made by Joseph Thiriot in Mirecourt circa 1780/1790. Fine viola of the french late 18th century school made by Joseph Thiriot in Mirecourt. Proposed for restoration& set-up. The viola is a fresh find, and is a beautiful example of the fine Mirecourt productions at the time, the front made of straight and narrow grain, the back, ribs, neck and head made of faintly flamed maple. This instrument has not been played for decades(probably since late 19th century) and has still two of what could be its original hammer-shaped rosewood pegs, the two others being later 19th century ones, with the remains of gut strings from the last play. The varnish, of a delicate amber colour, is entirely original, as well as the neck and button which are in a great condition. The head is a late 18th century beauty, very ... morearistocratic, beautifully carved in the style of the Parisian school. The condition of the viola is really nice, the only issue of somewhat importance is a long woodworm work running on the table over the soundpost position which has been filled a long time ago, not going through though. This would benefit from an artistical restoration, to give the viola its former beauty. There are also a few very short woodworms works on lower ribs, and the lower left corner on table has been scratched. Otherwise, the viola is in a gorgeous original condition. Once properly restored and set-up, this gem will worth many thousands dollars. A restorer's dream! On the inside back can be found the original fire brand of the master. Thiriot A La Ville de Cremonne" and on the inside top just above soundpost is another"Thiriot" fire brand. Dimensions are: L.O.B: 378 mm. Upper bouts: 176 mm. Middle bouts: 119 mm. UNUSUAL Antique Violin Coffin - Handmade Miniature Casket - Wooden Viola Case
Available here is an antique violin or viola coffin. I am not sure which. Could be used as a case for any string instrument. This is a very interesting and unique case. It is handmade and designed to look like a miniature casket. It is very old. Probably late 19th century. Despite its age, it is in very good condition. The case is still functional and can be carried by the handle. Currently. There is a bracket on the back that allows this to be hung on a wall, although this is easily removed. The case measures approximately 32" from tip to tip. 9.5" at the widest and 5" tall. The inside of the case measures approximately 29.5" There looks to be some water stains on the base of the case. Antique French Viola: 15 7/8", Made in 1840
Due to hand injuries. I'm no longer able to play my viola, and after several years wrestling with the idea, I've decided to sell it. The sound on this instrument is truly amazing and it breaks my heart to give it up, but it hurts too much to try and keep playing. It was made in 1840 in France, so it's a true antique. The decorative scroll(both front and back) and the gorgeous inlaid wood work on the belly of the instrument make this viola truly one of a kind. In 1999 the viola was appraised for US$9.500 and the bow for US$550. I've included a picture of the appraisal which also contains a detailed description of the instrument(and I've typed up the description below for easier reading) The case and shoulder rest pictured will come with the viola and bow. Rare old antique French viola: presumably Antoine Marius Richelme
A violin maker who does not understand anything about the acoustics of stringed instruments is truly a mere carpenter. Antoine Marius Richelme(1832-1896) was as unyielding in his opinion as he was exceptional in his art and ahead of his time. The Marseille-based luthier worked on geometric studies that placed him amongst the distinguished tradition of such craftsmen as François Chanot(1788-1825) and Félix Savart(1791-1841) The spectacular instruments of these two men were not able to establish themselves commercially. Although they did manage to influence modern violin making, as can be seen in Savart's influential work with and other endeavours. Like his predecessors. Richelme did not succeed in founding a new school in the field, but he did leave behind stringed instruments of outstanding quality; interestingly enough, they ... morewere more of a stylistic return to the older style of violas da gamba. This viola, which was very likely made by Richelme himself, is a typical example of his work; the most defining characteristic of his craftsmanship is the unusual contours of the upper and lower bouts. As a luthier, Richelme not only enjoyed experimentation but demonstrated solid skills in his trade, as can be seen by the excellent tone woods he selected, such as the tightly flamed and strikingly lovely maple of the back. The very well-carved scroll has an aristocratic air and is set off by its blackened edges. The full breadth of Richelme's artistic talent as a violin maker, however, was focussed on acoustic matters, and the unusually lovely, warm and mature sound of this viola is indeed the clearest testimony to his model, which is precise, resonant and perfectly balanced across all of the strings. This instrument is a real beauty, achieved by a very skilfull hand, with all the characteristics of the best french productions of the time. The french corners, the f holes, the edges work, the purfling, the button, the head are finely executed. The back is made of one piece of a spectacular maple of the finest horizontal curl. The varnish, of a red-brown colour on a golden ground, is entirely original. And near new violins and violas that are listed as old(when they are not really old, just made with"old" wood) on Ebay, I begin to think that genuine vintage instruments should be priced at a premium. The one that I am listing here will not be priced high, just started at $300.00, and left to seek it's own level ... morewith no reserve. The body on this one measures between 15" and 15 1/2" There is no label in this instrument, and I am not expert enough to tell where, or by whom it was made, but I can tell you that it did exist at the turn of the century according to the people from whom I bought it. It was owned by a great uncle who played in a symphony orchestra in Pittsburgh, and allowed to languish after he passed, until a descendant decided to learn to play approx. 30 years ago. He took the viola to a repairman, and had it repaired, and set up for him to play. The lessons did not work out, and I am now the new owner. I'm sure that the top was removed, as I can see cleats applied to the inside of the back where the 2 pieces join. There are also what look to me like different, older cleats inside the back that are stabilizing one of those tight, wavy grain, cracks that appear in figured maple when it gets old. I am unable to see them, but am sure that there are cleats stabilizing some cracks on the table also. I don't think there were any cracks at the sound post. This beautifu l antique German viol a is offered to the highest bidder with no reserve. The back of the viola measures 385mm or 15 3/8 inches. The viola is unlabeled and I do not know who made it. It does bear the repair label of Richard Lubocki of Dortmund. Germany dated 1922. The viola is in very good condition with three small well- repaired hairline cracks on the top. Near the saddle and tail piece. Other than these repaired cracks. There is no other damage or repairs to be found. There are no cracks or repairs in the sound post or bass bar areas. The set up is completely fresh. Including a new custom bridge, vintage tail piece( high gr ade ebony) Tail gut, sound post, and strings. The work was done by an experienced and professional luthier. Who checked it out thoroughly. He also plan ed the fingerboard. Adjusted the pegs to hold well ... moreand turn eas ily. And installed new Thomastik Dominant strings. The viola is ready-to-play. This is a very attractive instrument with a ri ch. Fi ery oil varnish and beautiful woods. The back. Ribs and neck are all from the same Maple tree, h ighly f lamed with intense figure. Antique Early 20thC Carlo Bergonzi Copy Viola Violin-Great Condition
Up for bids is this Antique Early 20thC Carlo Bergonzi Copy Viola. This viola was made in the early 20thC and I believe it is German but it could be Italian. This piece is in the style of a Bergonzi and has a label inside that reads Carlo Bergonzi Anno 1733. There is an old wax seal to the back with some sort of eagle on it. This viola is in great condition with just some very minor wear to the edges in a few spots. This viola should sound great once it is restrung. This viola measures 24" in length. 8 1/2" in width, and around 4" in depth. This viola comes with a case which is probably original and a bow with abalone inlay but the bow also needs to be restrung. Beautiful 1963 Pfretzschner Viola For sale is a beautiful 1963 E.R. Pfretzschner Viola. With a flamed maple neck and scroll. Internal blocking, figured maple back, spruce soundwood top, and properly offset soundpost, this viola sounds amazing. R ecently refurbished here in our lutherier shop. The original finish remains. It takes years for the soundwood in these classic violins to age and give you the mellow tones that a violinist is looking for. The sharpness has mellowed out of this viola. The very high quality of Maple and Spruce give a fantastic resonance to this instrument. Their are no mentionable repairs that have been made to this viola. Very few scratches or dings through the years. There is a chipped corner on the side rib as you can see in the photo. Very minor. As you can see the beautiful maple in this piece gives it an aged ... moretone that is absolutely beautiful. The finish was buffed in 3 seperate stages and a hand buffed finish was applied. The original Shellac remains as do the scratches and minor dings that give this viola a time earned beautiful finish. The fittings were replaced with matching rosewood tailpiece. Pegs, and chinrest as well as a custom bridge. Nickel wound steel strings with brass rings complete the sound of this fine piece. Weight- 490 Grams. I came across several antique string instruments from a recent estate of a local musician. I am not an expert on string musical instruments and will describe them as good as I can. Thank you and please see my other auctions for the other musical instruments from the same estate. This auction is for an antique violin/cello bow made in Germany by Richard Weichold Dresden and dates from the 1800's. The bow is marked with the makers name on the edge. Made from pernambuco round wood. Ebony frog, mother of pearl and is signed as seen in the photos. Has silver wrapping and pieces. The bow is straight and strong. Appears to have been repaired near the top. This is a very old repair and wrapped in brass. Not sure the extent of the repair. No noticeable cracks and no chips. Some wear to the mother of pearl as seen in the photos. In very nice vintage ... moreoriginal condition. Will need a new horsehair hank. Measures approx. 29 1/4" long. Weight is 57 grams. Rare vintage bow and is a must for any collector. Found safely stored away for years at a recent 90 year estate and was safely stored away for years. Beautiful Antique Wenzel Sandner 15 1/2" German Viola 1948
This is a very nice antique german viola from an estate. It has a 15 1/2" back. Inside label reads Wenzel Sandner and has date of 1948. The executor of the estate thought that it had been repaired by William Moennig and Son in Philadelphia. So I took it in to a luthier to have it looked over. He said that it was beautifully repaired. There were several items in the case including a bridge marked William Moennig and Son. So I don't doubt that is where it was repaired, and possibly purchased. The last picture shows the area of repair. There is also a scuff mark on the back that can be seen in the pictures as well. The little white dots are in the latter photos are just dust the camera picked up. This Viola is setup and ready to play, and sounds great. There is no bow included.
