Antique Fireplace fender/guard. We believe, based on using a magnet, it to be brass and another metal, maybe copper. The pierced design is floral, feet are paws. It measures approx. 42" long x 13" deep front to back x 6 3/4" tall. It has normal wear from age and use, some spots and scratches. On one back edge there is a tiny spot of surface rust, on back a few little places of surface corrosion. I say"Surface" because in my opinion, if new owner chooses to polish the piece they will resolve. I like the original patina and wear, gives it character. Beautiful Fine Detailed Antique Brass Fireplace Fender Fine Ornate Castings
This beautiful Brass Fireplace Fender belonged to my parents- my father inherited it from his aunt and uncle's estate in London. Ontario. Likely acquired there as all other furnishings came from Ontario dated around 1910. You will see in the photos a number on the casting(s) it appears to be R 518809. More than that I cannot tell you. There is some minimal damage to one small facing(see photo- that would be unseen when in place in front of the fireplace. I imagine it can be repaired. Needs a good polishing. Dimensions are Length 52 and 1/2 inches X 14 inches deep and 6 inches high. All measurements are from the outside edges. I will ship it to Canada or the USA. Gorgeous ANTIQUE Fireplace Fender / Surround - Circa 19th Century - Bronze/Brass
This is a wonderful antique FIREPLACE FENDER with unique features. On each side of the fender is a circular. Concaved and relief plate depicting the face of a woman. We believe this to be a 19th century creation and possibly older. Amazing details with ball finials and an intricately carved base. The scroll work throughout is beautiful. A lot of skill and effort clearly went into making this piece. This fender came from the Minor Hill estate in McLean. Virginia. If you google Minor Hill, you will see that this is an 18th century house owned by George Minor, Sr and Jr in the early days. This is also the house where Dolley Madison is believed to have hid during her flight to and from Washington, DC during the War of 1812. There was a recent estate sale at this location where everything had to go in preparation for its upcoming sale. The second ... moreto last photo is how the fireplace fender was found at the sale. We have cleaned it up using soap and water. The last photo is of the historic house itself. Excerpt from an online site: This house may have been where Dolley Madison stayed for two nights before returning to Washington. Located at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and North Nottingham Street in McLean, Virginia, the original house was reportedly constructed of logs as early as 1730. In 1770, George Minor, Sr. purchased the property and added a wing to the existing house. George Minor and his first wife, Ann, had seven children. The eldest, George Minor, Jr. inherited the house and occupied it during the War of 1812. George Jr. served as Lieutenant Colonel of the Virginia Militia 60th Regiment and was called to the defense of the capital; however, administrative delays prevented him from reaching Bladensburg in time for the battle. During the Civil War, the high ground south of the house hosted a Union Army encampment, complete with an observation tower. The house still stands, now surrounded by later suburban development. Some light toning and typical crazing. There is a partial hairline in one post(see photo 10. Lower left side of post) Log holders are made of iron. The brass fender features 6 Longwy ceramic tiles. One tile appears to have been under fired or was effected by the heat source. This tile has darkened and the glaze softened with some flaking(see photo 4, center tile) Overall condition is solid and shows beautifully. Originally created for a Fifth Avenue mansion in New York, the fender eventually made its way to Los Angeles before returning to New York in 2007, where it remains in a period townhouse.
