French Louis XV Style Antique Settee Sofa Canape, Carved, Gilded & Painted
French Louis XV Style Carved and Painted Antique Settee Early 20th Century Item# 130008SIU26 A very attractive antique settee of the French Louis XV taste. This is a lovely piece that exhibits all typical elements of the Rococo movement, but clearly with an angularity that speaks of influence from the Art Deco movement. The frame of the antique French settee is painted in a tarnished silver, this delightfully worn away in well used areas, resulting in a nice growing patina throughout. Resting over the trapezoidal seat back. The crest is carved of the solid with several roses that flow outward into the molded frame with foliage, flanked only by pyramid finials draped in acanthus leafage at each corner. These vary in detail, some parts of the finials being of incredible depth and multiple layers of acanthus, while others are somewhat blurry- ... morethis is likely accounted for by overpainting at one point, where too much paint was used and resulted in a"blurring" of what is likely very fine detail beneath the paint. The arms bend out around the round seat in a highly circular movement, the handholds carved with scaled embellishments along the grip and down the arm support, the paint on these somewhat worn away to reveal the(presumably) beech frame beneath. The legs have robust acanthus leafage flowing from the knee along the frame as they join the seat. Each foot terminating in scrolled toes in the Louis XV manner. For anyone passionate about the Louis XV style in antique seating furniture. This is a simply lovely antique settee to be actively enjoyed. The upholstery should be replaced in our opinion, though it does seem relatively free of stains. The chaise is full length it measures about 52 inches long by 26 inches wide it is 31 inches high to top of the crest and to the top of the cushion it is 17 1/2 inches. Late 1800's early 1900's federal style gossip bench~vintage settee~beautiful
This is a gorgeous old gossip bench from late 1800's-early 1900's. It is a federal style with the original horse hair bottom.This beautiful settee would make a great piece in any home with a little TLC. Take a look at pictures buying as is, it does need the bottom fixed from years of use it needs to be re supported as you can see from the pictures, there are a few places on the bottom where the wood has splintered, but very little as you can see in the pictures. Also the right arm does have a few small marks on it I believe they are water marks. But this bench has great potential it would look absolutely beautiful refinished which wouldn't take much. I believe the wood is mahogany but I am not 100% sure about that, but based on the age and time period I would say is mahogany. It has very ornate beautiful detailing in the wood ... morecarving. This piece is an older one…I'm not sure of the vintage…it could even be 19th century(1800's)but it's be re-upholstered very recently by the people from whom it came…and done very nicely as you can see in the pictures.the loose cushion has fasteners on either side that attach it to the bottom so that it doesn't move…and it's finished on both sides so you can flip it if you ever needed to. Both sides are in great condition. The surface is finished in an extremely attractive and vibrant burnished gilding. The crest is intricately carved with upward sprawling acanthus leafage along the twisted rope-and-ball framing, flowing around the entire outer frame and apron of the canapé. The acanthus leafage is repeated throughout, flowing down the handholds, climbing up the arm supports, lifting the medallion back and draping from the turned legs. Each portion of the canapé is handsomely embellished. The sofa retains a later silk upholstery, this mellowed and soft to the eye from years of use, but remains in"good" condition ... morewith only minor discolorations. The entire form rests over turned and tapered legs with deep fluting terminating in ball feet. Of large and impressive dimensions, this is an incredibly striking work from an era of the very best in Louis XVI revivalism. Beautiful hand carved French Provincial small-scale settee. The beautiful wood frame is painted glossy black. With yellow velvet upholstery offset with tack trim. Truly one of a kind antique. High quality carving and craftsmanship. It's very sturdy and good for everyday use. Quite comfortable with a down cushion. Totally elegant and charming! This is the perfect piece for a smaller space: apartment living rooms. Entryways, the hall, a dressing room or bedroom. I don't know exact age, but antique/vintage. Possibly 1920's. The elaborately carved wooden frame is in excellent condition, quite strong, with no visible cracks, chips, dents or gouges. Pieces like this. Embellished with an attractive mix of details carved of solid wood offset by gesso decorations under a burnished gilding. The crest rail is a complex display of twisted ribbon backed along the outer edge by twisting rope below the raised central motif of crossed torchieres. The open arm supports are delicately carved with a deep and robust acanthus carving, this furling over at the top in lifelike realism.
