Made in France for export to the South American market. This piece is part of a set that was purchased in the 1960's by an American Collector in Peru. She paid $20,000 for the set and we are selling the other matching sofa and the two chairs in another listing)The frames are heavily carved wood, with gilded floral motifs and other period-style elements, including some areas that look very Art Nouveau. Well-maintained antique condition, the frames are solid- there are some joints that show small lines of seperation, but nothing that affects the stability or useability of the piece. The cream paint and gilded areas are very good, there is some flaking to the gilding, and the front of the arms that would have received the most wear have seen some over-painting. Please note these are larger pieces than your normal sofa or setee from that era. It sort of has an Art Nouveau look to it. The settee is about 49" wide(seat itself is 42" and 37" tall. Both pieces have the Thonet paper label as well as the stenciled"Thonet Austria" The caning is hand woven not machine made. It would be very costly to have all this caning done today. Not sure if the caning is original but it is in excellent condition; the last picture shows a few very minor breaks in the chair seat. Also at some point somebody added some strengthening screws in the back of the chair(next to the last picture) The arm of the chair might have a repaired split where it joins the chair seat. Antique settee and matching chair. I do not know much about these. They were at my grandmothers, I believe they are early 1900's but could be dated earlier I am not an expert, please view the photos and ask questions. I was told they are queen anne but I am not sure also told rare to find matching chair. The fabric on the settee is very old and worn may be original but the chair has newer fabric. Photo's include the underneath of the settee, where some of the nails have come loose did not fix this as by seeing the inside perhaps an expert can date it. But the upholsterer used mohair to describe the blue velvety fabric on the sides and the edge) Color(colors) Multicolor consisting of: Cobalt blue. Wooden/ real wood turned legs carved-Pattern: Floral scroll or free flowing leafy/ leaves reminds me of a fleur de lis pattern; not sure if this is brocade or damask.
