This Victorian style sofa. We believe was made around 1920, but could possibly be older. It is in excellent, sturdy condition, considering its age. 6 and 1/2 feet wide. 2 and a half feet deep, 34 inches tall from bottom of foot to top of crown. The intricate details are hand carved in the 3 front legs and ornate crown piece. We believe this is made of walnut. And has a walnut colored finish. There are some scratches to the finish, but all appear to be minor. certainly able to be sanded out if someone had a mind to refinish the wood. There does not appear to be any major damage at all. This is definitely not the original fabric. It has been lovingly reupholstered in this light denim colored fabric with off white rose print. The upholstery appears to be in great condition. French LOUIS XV Meridienne Style Antique Sofa/Fainting Couch - Early 1900's
Uniquely Shaped Louis XV Style Meridienne Antique Sofa with Curved Headboard and Footboard; Curved Backrest. The sofa rests on 6 carved walnut legs with scrolled feet. They connect to the bottom frame of the sofa(also of walnut) which has a carved floral motif in the front center. With smaller floral rosette like carvings topping the 2 front feet. The frame has a minimal amount of carvings but has curvy/wavy woodwork, reminiscent of the Louis XV style. Between the side and rear legs the curvy/wavy carved wood design flourishes, and is accented beautifully by the double piping upholstery which runs perpendicular. The armrests are wider carved pieces of walnut that have a scroll like details at the point where the backrest frame meets the cascading arm piece. The backrest trim has a similar curved/wavy design with some floral/foliage style ... morecarvings near the frame seams. The backrest trim is highest at the left side(backrest) And slowly curves down to the scrolled right side(footrest) Also, the backrest and sides(headboard/footboard) have been restuffed giving a very plush look. Vintage Empire Style Couch At Least Over 50 yrs old and may be over 100 yrs old
What I have been told of its history: This couch owned by my Father-in-law was previously owned by his Grandmother from approximately 1970s/80’s until he bought it from her approx. 1999. How it came to his Grandmother was via her second husband. Whose first wife had passed away and it was originally hers and in her family. My Father-in-law was to understand that it’s been in these families for at least 50 years. His Grandmother had it reupholstered sometime after she married her second husband in the 1970’s/1980’s. At that time she may have had the Seat Cushions. Pillows and Arm covers made for this as well and it may not have originally had any of that, not certain. We all agree it was definitely reupholstered in a rather 19th century Victorian tapestry style fabric. My Father-in-law said it’s Mahogany wood but I am not sure if the wood ... moreis indeed so or just the finish. Based on what I have looked up and learned: The Empire Style was produced approx. between 1820’s– 1920’s and it’s style and influence is a direct result of Napoleon. This Couch definitely is Empire Style in its appearance with handmade hand carved wood work with the imperfections that come from handmade. There are Rosettes. A Ribbon, Cornucopias, Clawed Animal feet and Wings. The feet are attached to a larger piece called a Monopodium. From what I could see briefly on the underside of the couch it looks like under the webbing that was added when it was reupholstered there is perhaps a burlap type material. Now I don’t know if it is actually made during the Empire Style era or not but it seems highly possible. A friend of mine who works in Antiques and is a HUGE fan of the Napoleon I& II era's feels certain just on seeing the photos alone that IS an actual Empire Style Couch! So it could be over 100 years old. We know for sure it’s over 50 years old at least but wouldn't know without a full appraisal and we're not interested in doing that. The exposed wood trim is nicked in some areas& could easily be spruced up. approximate measurements are 34 inches in height 72 1/2 inches in length 28 inches in depth. Vintage 1940s Monterey Style Couch and Wingback Paddle Arm Chair each with a magazine stash compartment on each side of the furniture piece. Both the sofa and chair have been newly upholstered in Spruce Green Chenille. Original wood finish features distressed edges and original hand painted cactus on the fronts of both the sofa and chair in true Rancho California Spanish Revival form. The name of the manufacturer is faded on the original tag. However it can be seen that it was manufactured in Los Angeles, California during the 1940s for a furniture store in Portland, Oregon named Star Furniture Company.
